I'm essentially starting this thread over one guy but I thought it could generate some decent discussion. So I've seen thanks to some WWF DVDs and some tapes a good little bit of the AWA during the last week or two. It's beyond me how anyone ever took Baron Von Raschke seriously as a wrestler. The guy looks more like a cancer patient than he does a wrestler. I though he looked especially bad in there against tag teams like the Road Warriors. Just my 2 cents anyways.

The first point should be hilarious to anyone who knows about Meltzer's history of covering Kevin Nash's career. You can almost feel the smarm, if smarm can be felt. The second point is just creating more headaches to WWE because they don't think things through, which they deserve, as usual.

From the Observer, here is the line-up for Sunday's show... Jarrett vs Nash (w/ Tito Ortiz as special referee) --- Man, this is giving me flashbacks of the last WCW PPV I ever sat through. That happened to be one of the worst shows on record when Goldberg turned heel and Sting-Vampiro had one of the worst matches ever. I have no faith that this match will be any good and may stop watching before it happens. I am guessing Jarrett retains after some Raven run-in backfires. Christopher Daniels vs. AJ Styles (30:00 Iron Man) --- Thirty minutes is too long for these guys. I like both in a limited capacity but not for 30 minutes. At some point in this match, I'll …

Just posted on WO: Hope it's nothing serious for Nash, you may not like the guy's work but no one wants to see the big lug die or anything. Luckily for TNA, since they booked Nash to get a title shot over a bunch of more deserving guys, it would be fairly easy to shoot a "guy angry over getting bypassed attacks Nash" angle to cover this.

Modern era fans may know him mostly for the angle he worked with Jerry Lawler at Over The Edge '98, but the guy was one of the hugest stars of his era and this is big news. RIP. Hopefully a good bio will come out.

After a second viewing in two days, I have found another lost match. February 22 1987 Rock n Roll Express v Manny Fernandez/Rick Rude (Worldwide) This match should suck. First off, the WTBS Tag Title Switch was pretty mediocre (live crowds > studio crowds for the most part). Second, Rude is 100x better than he was three years prior in Memphis but he is still green. And Manny has never been a favorite of mine. Third, Gibson plays the face in peril. But hot damn if this didn't come together so well. The first half is all RnR with double teams and heel stooging, even with useless Paul Jones becoming somewhat useful. He isn't Cornette but who is. Sinc…

Instead of doing a weekly News and Notes with stuff just getting buried in individual comments, I am going to make separate posts based on Meltz's news. We'll see how this works out and if it increases conversation. Anyway, this all appears to be written before the surgery announcement so we'll have to see how it plays out in next weeks' Observer... --- One writing staff member claims Steaphanie buried Ross many times in the past few years. Stephanie referred to Johnny Ace, who she is tight with, as a head of talent relations who works with the creative and not against it. --- Some members of the writing staff believe Stephanie was behind the move, insistin…

Hot off the Observer website... Spike gives TNA its first prime time special by Dave Meltzer [email protected] Due to Spike TV preempting Impact on 11/5 for the live Ultimate Fighter special, the show had been moved to Thursday, 11/3 several weeks back. At first it was scheduled as a regular episode of Impact. However, with ratings well above projections on Saturday nights, Spike has given TNA its first prime time special, a two-hour taped show from 9-11 p.m. on 11/3. No details are available but it will be more like a Clash of Champions special than a regular episode of Impact. The show will be taped on either 10/25 or 10/26, mo…

I'm as happy as anyone to see that RAW has a new diva that actually knows how to work decent matches. But could the writers do a more blatant job of telegraphing her eventual heel turn on Trish, after Trish tells her that she's giving her the creeps or whatever?

X Division matches have *not* impressed me at all at this point, especially those of AJ Styles. His matches are convoluted crap, from what I can see. I've watched him every week on TNA, and all he's good for are highspots. Even on the ROH I've seen, he tends to bring down the talent he's working with, in the sense that his opponents typically have far better matches with other people. My biggest issue with him is just that he does highspot after highspot without any real rhyme or reason. I just can't buy his shit. Ditto Christopher Daniels, actually. I have no problem with wrestlers busting out highspots. Rey Misterio Jr is probably the very best high flyer of …

Who would you prefer to watch wrestle? I know we have some hardcore Canucks here but I also know we have some strong Flair fans as well. While Christian-Owen was rather easy to choose, I think this one is a little harder to figure out. Maybe not.

Coach. God, I don't really mind Coach but they wasted way too much time introducing him. Does this mean Lawler plays good guy now? Do they have two heel announcers? I think this was the best the could come up with after getting snubbed by Goldberg.

Acc. to Meltz: After the last investors conference, the ECW PPV estimate suddenly went from 268,000 buys to 310,000 buys. This would put the show well ahead of Hogan's return to PPV and Foley's return to PP in recent years. It would make the PPv the 3rd best selling non-major show in the last 13 months. The current company plans are for ECW One Night Stand II on June 11, 2006.

I am trying something a little different here. Either every few days, or each week, I am going to draw two wrestlers from the same/different eras, sometimes different promotions, and sometimes from different countries and you guys can debate on who has/had more going for them. I think when we did the WWF Wrestler Tourney, it produced some really good posts and maybe we can recreate that here without the responsibility of choosing every time. So, Owen or Christian... would you rather see Captain Charisma or King of the Slammys? This may be hard because most of us have a soft spot for Owen but try and keep it based on thier ring work, angles and interview skills.

You know, this year, I have really been excited about watching currrent wrestling. From ROH, select Japan shows, CMLL, and the 2005 WWE Comps EJ has made me. So what wrestler do you genuinely get hyped up for, whether it is a match announced for a future show, a match you see on a tape or DVD, or someone you will watch regardless of who they are wrestling? Who is keeping your interest in wrestling right now? This year, there have been a few... James Gibson --- His ROH/indy work has been phenomonal for the most part. Tim sent me a few DVDs and now I usually just buy a show that has him featured in one form or another. This can't be the same guy who was sti…

I am resurrecting an old topic because there are several new "regulars" who may not have participated in threads similar to this one in the past. For me... All Japan (1990-97) --- For me, this promotion single handedly made me interested in wrestling again when I was bout to give up on it for good. In late 99- early 2000, I was fed up with both WWF and WCW and really didn't have the love for wrestling that I once did. I get on the net, start seeking out recommended shows, read up on the history adn become an instant convert. Instead of putting my money into WWF PPVs, I star tpurchasing All Japan tapes adn become obsessed with wrestling all over again. Mid S…

SD first: A lot looks decent, but the bad looks extremely bad. The Boogey Man got laughed out of the OVW Arena where they tend to be more forgiving of bad gimmicks. I don't know what's being passed around the WWE booking staff to make them think he's ready for prime time. TNA Spoilers: Guess that solved the "AMW vs 3D isn't a title feud" question I posed earlier, but hot shotting the tag titles is another WWE style move than TNA needs to avoid to form a distinction in the fans' minds between the two companies. The whole funeral bit has a Katie Vick vibe to it, hopefully it comes off better on TV. If you absolutely, positively need to get something …
