I was thinking about the role women play i wrestling, not like in a separate division, but roles they play interacting with the men. WWE seems to only want "divas" now who play the Miss Elizabeth type role, but one of the things that made Elizabeth's character work is that she was the only female manager in the WWF when she debuted. Not every woman in WWE should have to be someone's girlfriend or sex object. Hell, one thing ECW did was book women as something other than that once in a while. One of the most famous bloody brawls was Fonzie vs Beaulah. Most guys know women are the most vicious fighters, so why keep showing them as wilting flowers in wrestli…

American Dragon v Paul London - ROH All Star Extravaganza 11/09/02 Now *this* is how you do a nice little match and hold back without giving away too much, since Dragon would be wrestling again later in the evening in a longer, bigger match. He's the total star of this match, showing his skill in some really smooth matwork. Most of the early stages of this match are worked in fairly basic fashion, but Danielson is so good at what he does that it doesn't feel that way, because he puts so much energy into even the small moves - a side headlock almost comes across as a shift in momentum instead of just a time killer or as part of some feeling out process. His butterfly s…

Paul London v Amazing Red - ROH All Star Extravaganza 11/09/02 Wow, it's really cool the difference between the first batch of ROH matches I watched and the second ones. The announcing has improved to a point where I can tolerate it. It's still not as good as it could be, but it's a massive step in the right direction. I was also much more pleasantly surprised at the quality of wrestling on this selection. That has nothing to do with this match though. The quick sequences at the onset are great fun, but you keep expecting them to stop at some point and either sell the parity they're trying to establish or move into something else. You also expect Red's DDT on the…

http://board.deathvalleydriver.com/index.p...hp?showforum=30 DVDVR is about to do a big Best of the 80s project, starting with the WWF. They've compiled 100 possible choices and if you supply postage costs and blank DVDs, they will send you the DVDs. You are expected to rank all the matches in order, and if you don't, they will probably ban or suspend you from the board. That's why they're doing WWF first - thinking they can weed out a lot of the people that will just be in it for the DVDs. Anyway, I'm totally stoked about doing this, and I thought some of you that don't visit DVDVR might be as well, so I thought I'd link you. All the info is in that folder, including…

Since Summerslam is coming up soon, I thought it might be fun to go through all of the old ones in blurb format in the same way we did the Wrestlemanias a while back. So what are your basic thoughts on each one. We'll have this thread just be Summerslam 1988-1992.

This November, WWE is releasing the following on DVD Screwed: The Bret Hart Story (3 discs) WWE Legends - Jake "The Snake" Roberts (3 discs) Ultimate Warrior DVD (unsure how many discs) Wrestlemania I-XXI box set The entire WM box set can be purchased for $299.95 at suggested retail, or you can purchase 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, 16-20 for $69.95 each. At this point, Bret is not involved in production of the DVD. If he is, he'll most likely want the name changed. Bret and Vince *are* back on speaking terms again though, with WWE wanting rights to Bret's upcoming books on his career. If it gives you any indication how extensive they'll be, he's already writte…

From 1Wrestling: Considering Hassan is pencilled into face Batista at Summerslam, I find this hilarious. Looks like a decision they made finally had consequences to it. I feel bad for Hassan getting hung out to dry like this, but I think it's great that WWE is probably going to have to change a lot of their long term plans now because they screwed up so royally.

I don't know how it's been the past few years, but at one time, the G-1 Climax was one of the best events of the year for New Japan and there were almost always a few great matches. Are there any surprises this year, or any opportunities to launch anyone from this? Kawada's entry seems to have a lot of people interested.

Jushin Liger v Shinjiro Otani - 03/17/96 (NJPW) This is one of the most heartbreaking matches I've ever seen, I do believe. Otani tries so hard and fights so valiantly, but yet again, his passion is his undoing. That's not to say he hasn't learned anything, because he does go for the kill in situations where he didn't against Samurai, but Liger is a step above Samurai, and that's a lesson Otani has to figure out for himself; it's not really something that can be told or explained. It's going to take more to put away Liger than it would have to put away Sammy, and he's going to have to dig a little deeper to reach his ultimate goal. Liger does a great job of putting ov…

One off the top of my head is Waylon Mercy. I think in the mid 90s, there wasn't but so much they could do with this gimmick. But they still could have worked it reasonably. Now the split personality character he had could get over like crazy if the WWE used him right. Playing mind tricks with the fans and wrestlers. He could start off normally, just showing a more ruthless nature in the ring when necessary. Then after weeks of befriending someone on the roster, make the big turn. With weeks of building up to his "uneasy" demeanor and personality.

It's not the type of thing that's been mentioned a lot, but as booker in 1989, Ric Flair had hopes of luring all the following names away from the WWF: Ted DiBiase Curt Hennig Bret Hart The Rockers Roddy Piper Randy Savage Let's say, for argument's sake, that they would have actually hired Tully Blanchard like they were supposed to as well, and that they were able to hang on to Steamboat at the time. Most of the guys I mentioned above considered jumping at one point. Now look at the roster WCW had around this time. How would you have booked the next 2-3 years? Your heavyweights: Ric Flair Terry Funk Lex Luger Sting Great Muta Brian Pil…

Eddie Guerrero vs. Rey Mysterio, 24/7/05 This match wasn?t for everyone. If you loved the build going into this match as much as I did then you?ll undoubtedly be a big fan of it. If not then I guess you won?t. I loved the fact that at the beginning Eddie made Rey shake his hand and give him a hug in front of Dominick so Dominick wouldn?t think that his uncle Eddie was a bad man. What was real good about it was the contrast in emotions from both wrestlers. Eddie was really happy that he was making Rey so vulnerable, where as Rey was visibly hurt and was reluctant to do it. The pay-off to this was a nice cheer when Rey clotheslined Eddie down to start the match. T…

How funny/sad is it when HBK can do a better shoot-style promo than people in a storyline based on real-life events. Not to mention the face pops he was getting for saying what most smarks think about Hogan. Heel HBK > Jeebus Lovin' Babyface HBK any day of the week. I even marked for him bringing back the "lays down for no one" catchphrase. The only thing that could top this is if Hogan comes out next week and cuts a promo mentioning all the times HBK lost his smile and had to give up a title. If both guys are willing to play ball, they could out-shoot the real life storyline.

Jeez.... a 2 minute cruiser match, Benoit jobs, your hot new tag team jobs to a midcarder and a fat old guy, Christian jobs again, the "terrorists" come back, and the main event ends in a non-finish. It looks like WWE worked long and hard to ensure no matter what kind of wrestling you like, you'd hate this PPV.

Bret Hart v 1-2-3 Kid - WWF RAW 07/01/94 The video package preceding this match is fantastic! It's obvious the vision Bret had for both himself and the company, and it plays out in the pre-match hype as well as in the match. He speaks in a somber tone, as they show clips of him speaking at the Hall of Fame banquet stating that he looks forward to following the careers of great wrestlers like the 1-2-3 Kid and Jeff Jarrett. He was attempting to be Jack Brisco in 1974, only he was doing it in 1994. He enjoyed the role of the serious babyface champion, the respectable guy, the one who kept the company prestigious and credible. It's sad that wrestling no longer had a plac…

(1) Christian is supposedly really upset about his current lack of push and as a result put out far less effort than normal last night. (2) Lots of heat on Johnny Ace for bringing Animal back in, and especially with them getting the titles last night. (3) After watching last night's show, a lot of wrestlers have a newfound respect for HHH because he worked so hard against Batista and Batista just isn't as good against anyone else. Match with JBL was said to be pretty bad.

Credit: 1Wrestling The style is dated. Get over it. It's not going to succeed, and the time isn't right for an alternative to do well in wrestling at the moment anyway. If this is going to have a snowball's chance in Hell, they're going to have to have a plan in place to actually build new stars instead of running nostalgia shows with Shane Douglas and Terry Funk. And they're running shows at Center Stage? Somehow, that's hilarious. Maybe the reason I'm so cynical is because I keep seeing this anti-sports entertainment movement on the indy scene. Yes, those words are annoying, but it's just another term for a pro wrestling company that runs storylines. ALL wrestli…

Before ROH on Saturday, Paul, Tom, Phil, and myself watched a few matches. The first was a great TV match from Fall 1994 between Sting and Steve Keirn. This is after Hogan came and you would figure this would have been a 3 minute squash. Nope. This is basically worked around a hip toss early on before Keirn takes over beating on Sting and using some mat work I have never seen anywhere else. Sting wins with a Scorpian Death Lock, right? How about a Stinger Splash? Nope. He hits a friggin GERMAN suplex for the win. ASnd this isn't against Vader, it is against Steve fucking Keirn. Second up Dustin vs. Terry Funk from Florida in 1989. 20 minutes, with Funk …

I re-watched both Magnum v DiBiase matches from the Mid South Vol 1 collection last night. This was after watching the 7/18/05 Misawa vs. Kawada match and while the match was great and a MOTYC, I was disappointed with the Tiger Suplex '85 on Kawada, as Misawa grinded Kawada into the mat (ala how he would do it with Kobashi) instead of Kawada taking it with a huge head bump like he would in their classic 7/24/95 match. Watching DiBiase put over Magnum's most offense with a variety of bumps was a treat. A punch early in the match would get a basic back bump. A dropkick would get a roll over on the neck. Magnum's powerslam on the concrete was very protected (as it s…

I picked up Mike Graham's The Best of Classic Championship Wrestling Vol. 1 yesterday and this gem was on it. This match is notable of course because it's one of the first US appearances of the man who would go on to be much better known as the Great Muta. By the way (although it should be obvious), this Prince Iaukea isn't the one who was in WCW, he's the son of King Curtis Iaukea and bears a close resemblance to Taz with hair. The first thing you get in this segment is a lengthy (and meandering) description of what exactly a ninja is by someone who's name escapes me at the moment who was challenging for the National Title. Hearing some barely coherent southerner…
