Ok, after seeing Loss comment on ROH and ECW fans in his match reviews, it got me to thinking... what should the appropriate response be? Personally, I think ECW and ROH crowds are direct reactions to what was being fed to them by other companies. For ECW, wrestling was in full-blown cartoon mode and ECW gave the mutants something they would not be ashamed of watching. For ROH, it is a direct response of companies like WWE dictating what the fans should like. WWF used to criticize WCW for planting signs and allowing their crowds to be manipulated. Back in early 2001, there were reports of WWE taking away the Rocky Sucks signs because they wanted Rock to be a face ev…

Raw drew a 3.8 rating, down from the recent range of 3.9-4.1 in recent weeks. The show was doing well, building from a 3.8 opening quarter hour rating to three straight 4.0 ratings, but then it crashed around the time of the John Cena music video and numerous commercial breaks. It dropped as low as a 3.5 rating, then grew only to a 3.8 overrun rating for Shawn Michaels vs. Edge, which is bad. The first hour average was 1.0 higher than the second hour. On Raw, Triple H walked off the show and said he would be missed. Although it was just a storyline scripted line, he may have bragging rights to it being true today. The NBA on TNA did well, drawing a 3.0-plus rati…

PWI: According to one source, Jim Cornette has been suspended by WWE for six weeks due to several recent outbursts at Ohio Valley Wrestling, including most recently one at last week's TV taping where he cut a huge promo backstage on Kevin Fertig for wearing a baseball cap while working in the ring for a dark match. The word going around at the Raw taping last night was that Cornette was being disciplined by the company. Edit: Apparently Tommy Dreamer will be taking over OVW booking

Chris Benoit & Kurt Angle v Edge & Rey Misterio Jr - WWE No Mercy 2002 You know you're watching a match that takes place in some bizarro world when Kurt Angle outworks Chris Benoit, and when a match would be better if it wasn't for Chris Benoit. That's actually very much the case here, as Angle brings a certain life to the match that Benoit just can't seem to muster. Kurt outwrestles the smaller Misterio early on and gets cocky about it before Rey gets revenge on him and slaps Angle in the back of the head after taking him to the mat in the exact same fashion Angle did to Rey previously. Angle tags in Benoit, and the match just isn't as fun from here, as Edge …

Man, Cawthon's site *rocks*! There's no other way I would have possibly known dates on these. Terry Funk v Junkyard Dog - 08/18/85 This match is slow and awkward at times, but Funk is doing everything he can to create movement, which gets big points from me, and even the smallest things (well, all they have is the small things, really) are sold enormously, with Funk taking a bump over the top rope and out of the ring four separate times. He attacks JYD at the opening bell and chokes him with his own dog collar before being shown the door, er, floor for the first time, and of course, we get that great Terry Funk Drunken Selling. JYD works over Funk's back, since he…

Low Ki v Red - ROH Road To The Title I like the intent behind Red sneaking in a punch to Ki's face off of a handshake, but if you're going to do that, make sure you throw a good punch. That said, the opening sequence rocks. You know you're seeing something that looks pretty fucking unbelievable when you repeatedly check your DVD, because you think somehow you're watching in fast forward. The announcers say it looks like something out of the Matrix, and they're absolutely right. Low Ki is the only ROH guy so far that has a true aura -- he doesn't seem like a guy you'd know on the street, but rather like a star, which is a breath of fresh air in an indy. Sadly, the good…

First, I wouldn't be surprised if they had to comp tickets, since ECW was never big enough to justify charging so much for the house. I guess they're trying to make up for the fact that it's being held in a smaller arena. Second, it's a horrible idea to use the phrase "sports entertainment" and update on the WWE website when the goal all along has been to make this authentic. I'm sure they own some ECW domains, so why aren't they using those?

Mark Briscoe v Jay Briscoe - ROH Honor Invades Boston After hearing so much about these guys for so long, both good and bad, it was a pleasure to finally be able to see them in action. I'm SO glad they wore different colors, because had they not, I don't think I would be able to tell them apart. While it's far from as good a match, this is more what I'd expect out of a brother versus brother match than Bret and Owen had at Wrestlemania 10 or Summerslam '94, just because they're not afraid to bring the hate here. The story plays itself out nicely that they know each other so well, and also that they're constantly oneupping each other. They actually ... pause occasional…

Low Ki v AJ Styles - ROH Honor Invades Boston This match is proof that you can do all the moves in the world, but if they're not sold, they're meaningless. This makes a nice contrast to the Funk/JYD match I'm going to get to eventually that doesn't have even a fraction of the moves on display here, but because even the small things are put over huge, that match translated better. What good are Low Ki's kicks and Styles' inverted indian deathlock if they don't actually send the match anywhere? I guess they were trying to do as many moves as they could that end with the word "driver" as well, and AJ's double pump brainbuster is just stupid. Yeah, it's explained by the a…

They were doing some good things in the promotion at the time -- they had just turned the Midnight Express heel again; Flair/Sting was getting a nice, long buildup with Luger and J-Tex waiting in the wings and Cactus Jack debuted. It was a fun time, but sadly, it would mostly come crashing down just a few months later. Rick & Scott Steiner v Samoan Swat Team - NWA Main Event 12/10/89 I thought I might catch a surprisingly good match here, since you never knew what you were going to get with the SST, but this really stops before it fully gets going, with some clumsy wrestling eventually leading to a quick DQ. Scott plays face in peril, but he doesn't do it long…

From Scherer: Good news I suppose, although the idea of Rock being a free agent and possibly signing with a competitor would have been a great thing for wrestling in the long run.
