Mike Awesome v Masato Tanaka - ECW Heatwave 1998 I can't believe I used to love this match so much. What was wrong with me? Granted, it's better than a lot of what you'll see in ECW, and it is interesting to see the FMW style worked in the US, but it's a mess, largely because there's no face/heel alignments, no ongoing story and no part where either guy has the other in danger for any length of time. The one thing they do right is build to the powerbomb outside the ring on the table, as they tease it several times before finally delivering it, and there are some terrific death-defying moves, especially Awesome doing a hands-free pescado from the ring to the front row,…

  6. Shawn Michaels & Diesel v Razor Ramon & 1-2-3 Kid - WWF Action Zone 10/30/94 This match, like all the other Shawn/Razor/Kid stuff around this time, establishes a fast pace early and doesn't let up. In that sense, it's incredibly entertaining, and the first minute is very action-packed, with Razor immediately getting in the Razor's Edge, only for Diesel to have to pull him out of the ring to avoid this match ending before it even really started. They work a great, Southern-style tag match that lets everyone get in their signature spots and sees everyone involve bust their asses. The layout of the action, in fact, reminds me more of a Japanese tag match than an …

Shawn Michaels v Razor Ramon - WWF RAW 08/01/94 In 1994, Shawn Michaels was already being given the star treatment, as this was his first televised singles match since Wrestlemania X, and a huge deal was made out of it, just as a huge deal was made of Vince McMahon being found not guilty of steroid distribution, as color commentator Randy Savage gloated about it at ringside. These two, for whatever reason, worked exceptionally well together, probably because they were so familiar with each other and they were both on the same page. That's always been an interesting paradox with Michaels, that he can have better matches with Razor Ramon and HHH than with Bret Hart and …

Where'd Marty Jannetty go? Didn't WWE sign him after the Rockers reunion match? Wasn't there some plan to have them team on houseshows? For that matter, whatever happened to the idea of having Garrison Cade grow his hair out and feud with Shawn?

Bret Hart v Diesel - WWF Royal Rumble 1995 There are many examples out there of Bret carrying slugs to something good, but this is only barely good, and the layout is questionable. It's interesting to note the difference in the way guys like Flair and Shawn carry bigger guys to good matches -- they do it by bumping like pinballs, having their opponents shake off some of their own offense and by showing fear. Bret's approach is drastically different, which has its good points. Instead of bumping and running to create an artificial fast pace, Bret controls the offense and dominates the majority of the match. He's the one with the better offense, after all, and he builds…

30-Man Royal Rumble - Royal Rumble 1995 This is actually one of the better-worked Rumbles, and one of the most exciting from start to finish. Many voiced displeasure with the company for shortening the intervals from two minutes to one minute, but in this case, it greatly benefitted the action. The only downside to it was that Shawn and Davey Boy both had the stamina to go another 20-25 minutes if they had to do so, and Shawn's victory would have been more impressive had he toughed it out that long. That is, in essence, the story of the match -- Shawn Michaels v Davey Boy Smith. This was really Davey's first chance to shine after returning to the company and he didn't…

We had our first tie, with Rey Misterio Jr and Paul Orndorff each getting 9 votes. I wasn't sure the most fair way to handle it, so I have PMd Dazed, the only person who signed up who hasn't voted, and told him to break the tie. Whenever I hear back from him, I will update the results thread. It's imperative that you all vote in every single match if you signed up. We have 19 people voting, and if one abstains, it complicates things. Please, in the future, make sure you all vote on every single match. Thanks.

Yea, Though I Walk Through The Valley Of The Shadow Of Suck ? Part 16 Sting v Sid Vicious ? WCW Halloween Havoc 1990 This match is pretty infamous, not because of the quality, though that aspect of it is infamous in its own right. It?s infamous for having an almost legendary finish to it, one that people would remember for a long time to come. If you want a move by move account of this match, you?ll be disappointed because there are only so many times I can type punch and kick before I get writer?s cramp. Indeed, this match was festival of the most basic and mundane of wrestling moves, with nothing but kicks, punches, one nerve hold, and the weakest and lamest…

Ric Flair v Sting - NWA Starrcade 1989 While the event itself was an anti-climatic conclusion to a great year for the NWA, the booking for this tournament could not have been any better than it was. Going into this match, if Flair won this encounter by pinfall or submission, he would win the match. If Sting won the match under the same circumstances, he would win the tournament. If the match went to a draw, Lex Luger would be the winner of the tournament, based on the point system. The last time these two faced each other in a high-profile singles match shockingly saw midcarder Sting take Flair to a 45-minute draw; he had never secured a win over Flair, but then a…
