Not to complain about things no one can control, 5 years after the fact, but this is one of the bigger misses of the '96 Yearbook and one ECW segment that absolutely should have been on, at the expense of one of the more superfluous Pulp Fictions or something. Shane bumps around like a pinball before dropping Pit Bull with a swinging neckbreaker and a piledriver, as Francine implores him to "break his neck just like you did to Gary!" Francine as a trashy Jersey shore bitch is more fun than I remembered. Pit Bull gets his hands on her and makes her beg before dropping her with a powerslam...which may have had some impact if she hadn't eaten a fucking Superbomb the same day…

This was for a shot at the lightheavyweight title the week after, so if you know 1996 CMLL then you know who wins. It also featured four guys who wrestled in the welterweight division around this time, perhaps a sign that they didn't worry so much about anyone's actual weight by this point. The first time I saw the listing for this match, my immediate reaction was something like, "Oh, get Ringo the fuck out of there." But I tell you he fit in perfectly. I wish he'd worked like this more often, this stooped over old grappler who can dish out some lessons on the mat to a young punk, instead of bouncing off the ropes with slow armdrags and spinkicks. Speaking of spinkic…

I would think that this was a dream match at the time. The recently returned Shinzaki (from the WWF run he had at the time), co-founder of Michinoku Pro against FMW Ace, Hayabusa. There is big potential for this match so I was hoping these two would get the best out of each other. Both are big personalities and them clashing should be pretty epic. However, this was not that. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt because Hayabusa looked really hurt near the end. The knee was the clear cause of pain for him with Hayabusa favouring it and punching it in fustration multiple times. I don’t blame them for ending the match, if that was the case. But the match was pretty r…

YUJI YASURAOKA OF THE DAY #2 This was a clipped match which is annoying as the stuff that is shown looks really good. Tons of brutally stiff blows. The match was centered around the Kitahara/Mochizuki interactions. Mochizuki is Kitahara's boy, which means Kitahara is legally obliged to murder him, which the crowd also senses. Yasuraoka mostly gets kicked in the face, but busts out his really spectacular dive in an awesome moment right after Mochizuki blows his fancy springboard attack and gets mauled by Kitahara for it. Even Arashi busts out a reckless spinkick in this! WAR was a magical place.

Slow start to this--not the usual Doc/Gordy/Ace kind of slow with a lot of laying in holds. Just deliberate. And there's good stuff to be found, like the little football tackle dick-waving contest between Doc and Patriot. This picks up and turns into a hell of a match, with a closing stretch that wouldn't be totally out of place among the great early-'90s All-Japan tags. Kobashi works as sort of the juniory, in-peril member of the team, which I could see being a source of criticism, but...well, that's what Kobashi does. And while Patriot is fine, he's best served as an apron cheerleader who just comes in to hit his big spots. There's lots of neat counter-wrestling in betw…

Her Toyota-ness descends upon JWP for this Special Challenge match at Sumo Hall. This was entirely predictable in terms of how the hierarchical difference played out, but it was still a good performance from both women. Toyota pinched both Takako Inoue and Mima Shimoda's heel acts a bit too liberally for my liking, but she gave Kuzumi a real eye-opener in terms of what she (Kuzumi) was lacking. Kuzumi's selling was good, and she made the most of her comebacks when they came, but there was a marked difference in intensity and in the way Toyota was able to carry and project herself. Manami had the confidence to play to the crowd without worrying what her next move would be …

Lex Luger vs Greg Valentine - WCW Nitro 10/14/96 A surprising amount of wrestling kick off Nitro with Malenko/Armstrong, Duggan/Rotundo, and Hugh Morrus/Jim Powers, a surprising about of midcard talent too. I was working through all that but I picked my head up for Luger vs Valentine. This rocked! Two of my favorites and they crushed it. DiBiase & Vincent appeared in the crowd and I was pissed at first, they couldnt have interrupted Morrus/Powers, BUT thankfully they stayed in the crowd and let this match play out. Luger has injured ribs and Valentine was laser-focused. Luger back gives out on an early suplex and Valentine just rocks the back. Great old school Va…
