I have no idea how long this will take nor if I'll go the whole route... Maybe I'm just masochistic. WEEK 1 (January 1 to 7, 1999) : Death of WCW angle : The Fingerpoke of Doom. What can be said that hasn't been said already ? Actually in term of execution it was really well done and nobody saw it coming. I had forgotten that they also beat the shit out of Goldberg in the post-match celebration and that no one comes to his aid. No one. Man, WCW sure was depleted in term of babyfaces, as the Wolfpäck had been the big babyface faction for the last 6 months, and most of them (save for Konnan and Sting) turned heel there. I don't remember what was Bret Hart status at …

Lucha libre and British wrestling are the two forms of wrestling I'm passionate about and since people don't watch enough of both of them I thought I'd start another beginner's guide. So what is it that people don't like about British wrestling? The sudden injections of comedy? The rounds system? The awful finishes? The cooperative looking holds? Perhaps people don't like how wrestlers falling out of the ring is sold like death or perhaps they don't like how guys do massive flips off finger locks. Or perhaps it's as simple as the general repetitiveness. Whatever it is, let's hear it. Personally, I struggle with German wrestling. The clipping and the handheld camer…

Do we have enough interest here to maintain a "Current WWE"-like thread for New Japan? I know at least some of you keep up with all the shows King of Pro Wrestling was today/last night. I missed the first hour but thought the rest was a very good show of mostly ***-***3/4 matches with one standout in Ishii/Yujiro. My thoughts: - I guess the Junior tag title matches are typecast as these kind of meaningless go-go-go matches now, and while I understand there's a place for that stuff on a card I wish they'd get a chance to work more traditional matches sometimes as it's not really a style I'm a fan of. - El Desperado is already so much better as a heel. I hope this…

Loss and I were talking about this on IM and he noticed a good one in addition to the buzzwords like medical facility/physicality/championship/antagonist/WWE Universe/Superstars/Divas etc: When a heel is asked a question by an interviewer, he always repeats the question: Interviewer: "Can you explain your actions?" Superstar: "Explain my actions?" So, what else?

I'll eventually move everything into this thread from anytime this topic has come up, but there has been new stuff from Dave at the F4W board that I wanted to post.

So there is a lot of drama surrounding Ring of Honor lately, so I wanted to make this thread because I don't think we should clog up the "Comments" thread with it. Plus, honestly, I just find it all fascinating. So, Kenny King, 1/2 of the ROH Tag Team Champions (with Rhett Titus) showed up on Impact Live on Thursday night. His ROH contract ran out but he had a "verbal and handshake" agreement with ROH to not work elsewhere (or some shit like that). So ROH is mad and released a statement (which they have since pulled down): There is also this video from two months ago, with Kenny King expressing frustrations, so this wasn't out of the blue: He seems to…

Inspired by the Forgotten Good Workers/"Hey I Thought This Guy Was Supposed To Suck?" thread and the ghost of the Smarkschoice project. Dustin Rhodes vs. Arn Anderson, WCW Main Event 8/28/94 This was an enjoyable teaser for War Games. Dustin came out all bandaged up, looking to lay a beating on Arn. He was on auto pilot a bit, which is something Dustin was prone to doing, but Arn was his usual consummate self. It's amazing how much Arn bothered even on tapings like this. They basically worked they type of match you'd have in the opening two-to-five minutes of a War Games match, though it was a notch or two down on the type of intensity they'd bring to an actual W…

Serious question. I was trying to think of a promotion that has ever been worse and was struggling. Relatively major league promotions (meaning some type of TV or at least plenty of available footage) would be the criteria for competition. I'd take WCW 2000, which was a horrible year of wrestling for the most part, over any 12-month period of TNA. This is totally non-trolling. I'm just trying to think of a wrestling company -- ever -- that was definitely worse than TNA has been for their entire existence.

So on one of the podcasts, Will and Phil claimed that Butch Reed is the best black worker ever. With Too Cold Scorpio and the Rock 2nd and 3rd. I'm just wondering who else you think might be legitimately in the conversation. Has anyone seen any early Ernie Ladd?

This was suggested - if the mods disapprove please feel free to lock it: Timeline World Wrestling 1987 Honky Tonk Man;; Honky talks of doing vignettes in front of Graceland on a cold winter day. Honky liked the outside of the ring character building despite freezing his nuts off. Honky was stuck wrasslin Koko and SD Jones around the bottom of the card – he was ready to grab any brass ring offered Honky gets confused and talks about Survivor Series 86 as the start of the Hogan/Andre feud – clearly he is just remembering the build from the next year To show the popularity of wrestling at this point – in Jan 87 both JCP and WWF work Philly in the s…

I had a thread where I reviewed/talked about WWC before, but I think it was on the old SC board. In any event this will be the catchall thread for wrestling from Puerto Rico Stan Hansen v. Carlos Colon - Cage Match 1987 I thought this was an outstandingly great match. This is the sort of match that really bolsters the case for Hansen as a GOATC. I have no clue how regularly he was working WWC at this point, but he is crazy over here and of course Colon is like god on the island. Colon ambushes him as he is nervous about even getting into the cage and they proceed to have a sub-fifteen minute brawl that has all the staples you want. Hansen was really gr…

If this doesn't need it's own thread, feel free to merge but I watched some really cool stuff this weekend and wanted to write about it somewhere. Lawler vs. Snowman worked-shoot Mid South Colosseum match from June 1990 Phil's review: Jerry Lawler v. The Snowman USWA 6/11/90-GREAT Totally bizarre spectacle. This is set up by a shoot angle with Snowman coming out of the audience at the TV studio and interrupting a Lawler interview. He accuses Lawler of ducking him because he is Black and they have a really frenetic pull apart. That leads to this match and it was one of the most realistic "guys aren't cooperating" matches I have ever seen. Lots of wild s…

Inspired by OJ's WCW thread. . . Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch vs Sgt. Slaughter & Terry Daniels, MSG 7/23/84 I just clearly haven't seen enough of the formula based on John's comments of how weak this one was, because I thought the match was terrific fun. I never once got bored, except maybe in some of Daniels's million and one armbars. I can appreciate deficiencies of the heel-in-peril model and how it doesn't set them up as serious threats. But what I see here is two guys who don't take Daniels seriously early in the match, leading to his getting some dominance. I never really feel they're out of control when Slaughter's not in the the ring. Yes, they ge…

DVDVR discussion starting here. I don't have my copy yet (I blame Media Mail) but from talking to those who have it and reading those posts, it sounds incredible, with tons of previously unreleased information that borders on scary at times. Through the grapevine, I've heard that there's a bunch of NJPW dojo stuff (including a detailed passage about Hiromitsu Gompei's death as well Benoit being tortured and then going on to torture others when he became an estabished star), the truth about Dave Lagana's firing, Dean Malenko feeding Eddy Guerrero drugs, and a bunch of other fucked up material. I'll post a full review after I read it. Anyone here get it yet?

http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/689179...stler-real-life Most of the people on this board are probably familiar with everything discussed in this story, but it's still very depressing to read all of this when it's clumped together.

DEADLINE: 11:59PM EST, December 31st, 2014 THE FILE: http://theditch.biz/BestOf2000s_Japan.xls (updated August 16th) This has pretty much everything: matchlist, download/viewing links, voting instructions, etc. Feel free to share the link wherever. You input your ranks in the file and mail it back. BACKGROUND: Over at DVDVR, there was a really good year-end vote to cover 2006. I ran it for 2007, then decided to cover the rest of the decade and try to find any hidden gems people had missed. There was so much footage because indies could afford to tape and Samurai TV offered tons of airtime, and I wanted to make sure nothing fell through the cracks. I'm confiden…

Feels like there is enough indie fans on this board to have a thread like the Current WWE megathread. Show thoughts, upcoming stuff, or have point to make about an indie wrestler or feud from the mid 2000's. What have you. Now either this thread will seem unnecessary and Loss will delete it or it'll help extend from what BillThompson's Top 50 Workers list started with talking about current, not just WWE, wrestling.

All of Dylan's recent talk about Martel has motivated me to go back and re-watch some of the matches from Martel's AWA World title reign. Rick Martel vs. Nick Bockwinkel, Winnipeg, MB 3/28/85 The first of what I watched is this match against Bockwinkel. Martel worked more matches against Bock during this period than he did against any other opponent so these guys should certainly be familiar with each other. The match starts off with Bockwinkel breaking clean early only to eventually pummel Martel when both go into the ropes off an abdominal stretch. Bock then controls the ring by preventing Martel to enter. I guess it doesn't make much sense for a challenger to do t…

I said I'd do this a long time ago, and Bix hasn't let me forget, and he's right -- it needs to be done. So this will be the thread where I use the powers of Google, the website, the Torch board, etc. and post as many ridiculous Wade Keller quotes as possible. Anyone who has stuff to add feel free to do so.

I got an advance copy and it's not pretty. A friend of mine described Keith as "ambitiously stupid" after reading it, which is a term I will steal forever and ever. It ranges from inaccurate to stupid to offensive, getting worse and worse. It's a barely coherent collection of essays about Benoit and the Harts and dudes who died and whatnot. Some of the "highlights": - He says "I digress" more than anyone I have ever read a book by. Sometimes without digressing. - Dates are messed up all over the place, starting most blatantly with Benoit's 1995 WWF tryout being moved before his first WCW stint in 1993. - Then he claims that the AAA PPV got Benoit his …

As in, who is the worst actual professional wrestler? Somebody who actively sought out a career in professional wrestling, from the get go and didn't just fall into it (ex: someone who always wanted to wrestle, didn't have a day job, etc)? Someone who made it through wrestling school, and into a well known promotion, but were just so bad at it? Someone who never realised that wrestling "wasn't for them" and continued to stick around in the business? With these kinds of criteria we can exclude the likes of: The Great Khali (acting background) Kurrgan (was just passing through on the way to an acting career) David Flair Nathan Jones
