  1. Started by JerryvonKramer,

One gimmick I've always wanted to see is the idea of an old-fashioned 70s wrestler with no gimmick who INSISTS on the certain old-fashioned rules. For example, if someone hit him with a closed fist, he'd want a DQ. If someone threw him over the top rope, he'd want a DQ. In a tag match, he'd want to see the guy on the outside holding the tagrope. He'd naturally be a heel, but would present himself as a babyface standing up for old-fashioned rasslin' values a la Bill Watts (he'd be implicitly homophobic, bible thumping and so on). The closest we've seen to this character is Bob Backlund in 93-4 before his actual heel turn when the Mr. Backlund character came …

I'm talking about picture sense here with drawing power, in ring, getting over angles, overall character, et. being taken into consideration. Offhand I really can't think of anyone. Can't think of anyone from Japan. Mexico doesn't appear to have any obvious candidate like they did last year with LA Park. Maybe Kris or Eric can bring me up to speed there as I watch a lot of Lucha but don't totally get who is getting a huge push. Maybe Averno is a contender but he really doesn't feel like it. WWE really doesn't feel like they have a strong contender either. Cena is the biggest star but hasn't really done anything of note business wise and while he's had his…

  5. What are some of the rumored returns, arrivals, matches, angles, etc. that never happened? They dont have to be dream matches or angles just stuff that slipped through the cracks or things you would have liked to see happen. I personally would have loved to see Sid come back to the WWE three years ago when the rumors kept coming about him signing with Vince. Although they were probably started by Sid himself its something i would have loved to see. Would also liked to have sen Vader in ECW circa 98. There were rumors that he would show up as soon as he was released from WWE.

Ok, I've been taking in the old Raven Secrets of the Ring shoots and thought it might be an idea to discuss who is best at each of the components we get in a typical match structure. So here I want your picks for who you think was or is particularly excellent at each of the following things. If you can give examples of what they do well that would be fantastic. Thought it could be fun to see what sort of things people value. So let's start as the Raven series does with faces: Best shine Best selling (heat segment) Best hope spots Best fire Best comeback I might as well give some of my own picks: Best shine: this is a very tough one …

  9. Started by Dylan Waco,

This is a spin off from another thread, but I am interested to see if the consensus has shifted here. For years the standard opinion was "Bret" with a smaller contingent talking up Shawn and a few people throwing Benoit up as a possibility. Other possible candidates for a top ten if not a top slot would be... Too Cold Scorpio Owen Hart Steve Austin Eddy Guerrero Vader Ric Flair (wouldn't be near the top of my list but I think we need to be realistic about names that would pop up) Dean Malenko Rey Misterio William Regal Mick Foley Ricky Steamboat Arn Anderson Brian Pillman Psicosis Juventud Guerrera Sabu Guys who I think I coul…

  10. Guys, what are your thoughts on Tony Schiavone? I know he got a bad reputation as a ridiculous shill during the Nitro era, but for me, in the preceding decade he was one of the most solid play-by-play men in the business. His knowledge of moves was good, his PASSION and love for NWA and WCW was palpable. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of great moments and when they happened, and that gave things a sense of history. When he'd talk about Flair beating Race in '83, or Sting beating Flair '90, and so on. I don't know, he always gave me the impression that he was a real fan of "this great sport". And he made it feel more like a real sport as well. He was into stats…

  11. Part 2!

  12. So obviously Ronnie Garvin springs to mind, I've always thought that that whole angle made the NWA look second rate, Flair look weak, and putting the title on a midcard guy was stupid, but what other reigns have served to diminish the status of a title? I'd like to present the evidence for the IC title in 1999. Since its inception in 1979, it had always been treated as a fairly big deal and was always held by a credible worker. The list of names is very impressive to read. Then this happens: Ken Shamrock X-Pac Uniondale, NY 10-12-98 Val Venis Ken Shamrock Memphis, TN 02-14-99 Road Dogg Val Venis San Jose, CA 03-15-99 Goldust Road Dogg East Ruth…

  13. This thread is a little different than a standard "underrated" wrestlers list because I'm more interested in talking about and hearing about guys who either a. Have been almost totally forgotten over the years, i.e. "lost" or b. guys who have been casually dismissed as not worth watching or going out of your way to see because of some established consensus about their lack of talent/commitment/whatever from the broader wrestling World. Brad Rheingans Watching for the AWA Set Rheingans really comes across as the ultimate "I thought this guy was supposed to suck?" dude. The knock on him from veterans has always been that he had "all the talent" but didn't "und…

  14. In football ("soccer"), you can usually tell when a player is getting on a bit because he loses a yard of pace and takes fewer risks. If he's a defender he'll rely on his positional play more. And in the worst case scenarios, for example this happened with Gary Neville last season, they get cruelly exposed when they can't keep up anymore. Footballers become generally less mobile after they are 30. You get the odd one or two like Ryan Giggs or Paolo Maldini who are still good in their late 30s, but this is rare. Recently, a few people have mentioned that Money Inc. were two guys past their prime. Mike Rotunda was 35 in 1993, DiBiase was 39. This thread is not about…

  15. Started by Dylan Waco,

This felt like it deserved it's own thread and shouldn't clutter the other thread. Basically I think PG-13 MIGHT be a top ten all time team and almost certainly IS a top 20 all time team. Smkelly objected to this and rolled out a list that I will respond to. He also asked for a list of matches. It just so happens that I have watched a couple of short - but really great - PG-13 runs in the last few years and have several reviews written up on the matches and will post them here. Others should feel free to add their thoughts of course. I think this could be a fun thread and if it spins off into a more general discussion of great tag teams (forgotten, ignored and other…

  16. So most of the following are guys who are just worthless to my mind, I'm wondering if any of them ever had anything of note in the territories or even in the WWF or Crockett. I'll just make one thing clear before I start this, I hate wild man gimmicks. Always have always will. I'm not talking about Terry Funk here, I'm talking about when a wrestler is depicted as some sort of indigenous "savage" or as being mentally retarded in some way -- only one I've got any time for really is Rick Steiner. Here's goes: George "the Animal" Steele Afa or Sika (singles) Kamala Uncle Elmer Hillbilly Jim Dino Bravo Fred Ottman Nikolai Volkoff Boris Zhukov S…

  18. The recent DiBiase talk has precipitated this question. For me, DiBiase is close to being a total package. Incredibly solid in the ring, both as a brawler and as a technician (don't quite understand the arguments against the latter, his execution of the basics - suplexes, piledrivers, backbreakers, that SWEET powerslam, etc. - is pretty much perfect), he can talk with the best of them, he can act, he has natural charisma, he can work the crowd into a frenzy - what more do you want in a wrestler? I say "close", because he's probably more like a B+/A- in most of those areas than an A*. But from the conversations we've been having here, he'd automatically be disqua…

  19. Started by Kronos,

Earlier today, I was watching Hart Foundation v Bulldogs in an early WWF match in the 80's (pre pink Harts). I found myself thinking that they were telling a good story, with Harts playing the bully heels doing everything they could to power and cheat their way to a win. The Bulldogs had the crowd in their hands, working the comebacks and getting huge pops. It made me think about the concept of storytelling. We use that word all the time, and I decided I was curious what sorts of things it means to you veterans (I am a reasonably new fan, despite my 34 yrs of age, having only started watching rasslin in about 2006). I am working as hard as I can to catch up, th…

  20. Started by Loss,

This really deserves its own thread. Someone started a thread at the F4W board called "Wrestling from the 80's really isn't very good". Their point of evidence was that the Flair/Funk I Quit match was slow and boring. There's a lot of interesting stuff in that thread, but I want to focus on one key topic. Dave says, about Hamada being better: He seems to be missing the point. I've never heard anyone criticize Sayama for being different.

Not that I'm surprised, but it's interesting to me that Cena making gay jokes about the Rock is being praised as a really great serious promo response. Considering the focus put on teen suicide and bullying the past few months, that just felt stupid to me. It's 2011. Cena's better than that. It's possible to be edgy without that stuff.

This is, obviously, a blatant attempt to copy Loss's great list of favorite matches. I'll add whenever I can but I'd like to only add matches I watch/re-watch. Since I watched so many 80's matches I can start with those. ****+ star matches will make the list, as well as other that I didn't rate as high but still really liked and recommend. Loss's original list: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?showtopic=4803 Loss's V. 2.0 list: http://prowrestlingonly.com/index.php?showtopic=7317 As always feel free to discuss or flame any of my picks/ratings and matches I should check out. ** Updated: August 19th, 2010 ** -----------------------------------------…

This is something I've been thinking about for a while now. There's been a lot of talk of late comparing pornography to wrestling, especially on threads on various boards arguing about the WON HOF where the point has been raised "imagine if there were a porn HOF." Many posters reject the idea of this comparison out of hand without seriously contemplating it. I ask you to stop and think about it. Both are morally questionable in regards to abusing your body, thought by some to be a God-given temple to be cherished and not demeaned. Both are fueled by copious amounts of drugs and run by exploitive sociopaths who will swap out their "Superstars" without …
