Pro Wrestling Mostly

Because EVERYTHING is pro wrestling!

  1. Started by Mad Dog,

Okay not really. I was just wondering if there were any other fellow cachers on here.

  2. Started by Parties,

New movie from director Arturo Ripstein ("The Place Without Limits") is based on the true crime story of those two lucha minis who were murdered. Stars two real-life luchadors, but I'm not sure who they are/what their ring names be. The trailer shows them practicing together and both can clearly work. I vaguely recall OJ hyping Ripstein in the 60s/70s threads of DVDVR film. Have not seen it yet, but it is playing in a theater in NYC. Reviews are mixed, but this is hella intriguing stuff.

This has absolutly nothing to do with pro-wrestling, but I am part of the Potter generation. I read the first one as a wide-eyed 8 year old, and I have been completely, utterly hooked ever since. As such, his death comes as a huge shock and brings immense sadness to me; I grew up with him and Harry Potter; they are like Star Wars for me. Not to mention, his turn as Hans Gruber in Die Hard, and in so many other films like Robin Hood and Sense and Sensibility makes him an all-time great actor. He might just be the greatest actor to have never received an Oscar nomination. If I had to make a wrestling analogy, I guess he would be William Regal. Someone who never had the opp…

  4. Question: Can a worker be turned heel on the basis of an action he'd already performed on a separate occasion as a babyface? So, Anakin Skywalker turned on Mace Windu to become a heel shortly before his gimmick changed and he became Darth Vader. How effective was the turn, and how effective was his previous work as a babyface? My answer to both questions is "not very effective at all". Obviously, the actual turn was never going to be particularly shocking, since the adult fans all knew that Anakin was Darth Vader and the kids that didn't know had the fact bashed over their heads with all the marketing and merchandising material for 'Revenge of the Sith'. …

  5. I always love when someone pulls off a powerbomb variation in MMA. Also, Daniel Cormier is pretty big on body slams.

I know the majority of us post on Twitter, but it would be helpful to place the poster on here with the profile on Twitter. Usually I can do that no problem, but in some cases I know someone followed me because of PWO but I can't figure out who they are on here, I have a few Twitter handles, but I'm only listing the one I use for wrestling. So, let's have em, for those of you who do have Twitter, what's your handle. Mine is, @MOTYPod

  8. Earlier on, I watched the classic Kung-Fu flick Five Deadly Venoms. And last night I watched The Raid again. Couldn't help but think about how some of those dudes would fare in a UFC ring. Googling about I've found some disappointing, largely boring and predictable results which suggest that even though the early days of UFC were all about the geek's wet dream of putting different styles of fighter against each other a la Street Fighter 2, it quickly became dominated by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and the whole thing became homogenised. Seems to boil down to Kung fu guys not being able to deal with getting grounded or having an answer for grapplers. I have virtually no in…

  10. NYC Folks, A buddy of mine is throwing a celebration of '80s wrestling in Manhattan's Chinatown on 11/13. There will be screenings of old school matches and promos leading up to a feature presentation of The Wrestler on the big screen. $15 buys admission to the films, beers, and the chance to win wrestling and local stuff in a raffle. As a wrestling fan this event sounds really fun. It should have stuff to appeal to you regardless of your level of investment in wrestling. The details and their official write-up below. If you have any specific questions you can send me a message and I will do what I can to get your answers. Cinema Under The Influence presents: …

The above article, though, delves into a point I had never considered with how boxers regularly use selling and psychology (or "bullshit," as the author calls it) to directly influence how those watching …

The NBA thread is a great read, but baseball's the only sport I really know well enough to actually make comparisons of my own. Some of these have been dancing around in my head for a few days so I figured, whatever, I'll just make one for baseball. Scott Hall/Mike Scott Was having a fairly ordinary career until getting a new gimmick mid-career, which allowed him to completely reinvent himself (beyond what you'd think would happen by just changing characters or adding a new pitch). For a few years he was one of the game's biggest names, but he fell to irrelevance pretty quickly. Angel Azteca/Mike Witt Really good for a few years in his twenties, but didn't do th…

  14. New Zealand - A dominant promotion which has scoured the smaller territories for their finest talent and signing them onto high paying contracts, and is a monolith which is the clear #1 in the Wrestling world, and is a brand respected worldwide. Wales - The Barry Windham of Rugby. Size, grace, technique, and almost orgasmic to watch. Fluid movements, masses of which is arguably the greatest natural talent in the biz, but never reaches the top spot due to circumstance. Some in their control, some not. (Also have the nicest shirts, best National Anthem, best stadium, best sideburns in the 70s, and who real men like) England - Ron and Don Harris. Boring to watch one-…

Have at it. Serena Williams - Ric Flair. Excellent from the beginning and amazing longevity. There were others better at their peak, but no one has had the kind of longevity she has enjoyed. Steffi Graf - Toshiaki Kawada, most probably. Not as long a career as Williams, but when she was at her peak, there was no one better, except for Monica Seles, who was threatening to spoil the party before a lunatic stabbed her. Martina Navratilova - Jerry Lawler. Great at singles, great at tags, great on so many levels. Margaret Court - Hmm.... probably Ray Stevens? Not enough footage exists, and competition was easier in her time, but was dominant in a huge way. …

The start of a program between Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj, one of the endless attempts to create a new Michael Jackson with The Weeknd and Kanye cutting the best promo of 2015 to close out the show. More drug culture than your average ECW show too! I think they have successfully set up some interesting things long-term.

  19. "There was a time, about ten years ago, when I could write like Grantland Rice. Not necessarily because I believed all that sporty bullshit, but because sportswriting was the only thing I could do that anybody was willing to pay for. And none of the people I wrote about seemed to give a hoot in hell what kind of lunatic gibberish I wrote about them, just as long as it moved. They wanted Action, Color, Speed, Violence.... At one point, in Florida, I was writing variations on the same demented themes for three competing papers at the same time, under three different names. I was a sports columnist for one paper in the morning, sports editor for another in the afternoon, and…

The stuff contained in today’s opinion has to diminish this Court’s reputation for clear thinking and sober analysis." "When the Fourteenth Amendment was ratified in 1868, every State limited marriage to one man and one woman, and no one doubted the constitutionality of doing so. That resolves these cases." "Buried beneath the mummeries and straining-to-be-memorable passages of the opinion is a candid and startling assertion: No matter what it was the People ratified, the Fourteenth Amendment protects those rights that the Judiciary, in its 'reasoned…

  23. What the fuck is this guy's problem and why do people act like he's some great cartoon character? I mean every single time Road Runner is on my TV he's squashing Wile E. Coyote and making him look like a chump. When is Chuck Jones going to wise up and realize it's time to create a new star? Why does Road Runner ALWAYS have to win? How is the Merry Melodies brand going to grow when it's so stale and predictable? I think next time they should have Wile E. Coyote finally catch Road Runner and just when you think Road Runner is about to get away like usual, the ACME corporation actually comes through and the Road Runner is decapitated right on screen. Then Wile E. Coyote co…

To followers of Tennis, why does Novak Djokovic invoke such Cena-like reactions amongst a lot of Tennis fans, especially those who attend matches at the big tournaments? Passionately loved by some, virulently hated by others. He is clearly the best Tennis player in the world at present, but the chances of him enjoying Hogan-esque universal popularity like Federer and Nadal enjoyed in their pomp is not too great. A few people believe it is racial and ethnic discrimination; who better to understand audience reactions amongst those fault-lines than wrestling fans?
