April 1992

  1. This was decent. I liked the proto-Pancrase matwork to open, with Shamrock showing good control over the necklock, putting Suzuki in a couple of precarious situations. But this was mostly defense on the mat and not too exciting. Not much striker, aside from leg kicks and a few open hand slaps. The finish was cool, as Shamrock tried to power Suzuki with some kind of slam but Suzuki held on and cinched in the front necklock to take Shamrock down to the mat and submit him. Suzuki's post-win celebration was awesome.

  2. Savage vs HBK has always been considered a dream match, but it did happen a few times during WWF's European tour in April 1992. Sure, it's not prime Savage and Michaels isn't quite at the level that he would eventually reach, but it's still worth going out your way to see. I could watch Michaels bump off the ring post and turnbuckle all day. This being his first big singles match, he goes all out to get himself over. There's a spot where he counters a hip toss by using the momentum to land on his feet and you can see few faces in the crowd stare in awe. Sherri might just be my favourite manager of all time. 3. This was Matt D's Secret Santo pick. The Youtube link lists the date as 5/23, but that can't be right since this is a TOSJ match and the very famous Liger/Samurai final takes place on 4/30. Anyway, there's nothing too fancy here, just straightforward smashmouth wrestling. From Finlay, we get snug headlocks, stiff elbows, and some incongruous flying offense. From Samurai, we get some leg work (that Finlay completely blows off) and surprisingly decent punches. My favorite Finlay spot is the one where he lifts his opponent up by the hair (or mask in this case) and slams him sternum-first into the apron. There were audible gasps from the audience when he busted it out here. T…
