  2. Randy Savage vs IRS - WWF RAW 1/17/94 On paper this seems like a random match up to headline RAW, BUT Savage smashed some cake into IRS’ face last week during the 1-2-3 Kid & Marty Jannetty celebration. I am sure he deserved it for his shit talk. Savage is knee-deep in the Crush feud and IRS is wrapping up his feud with Razor at the Rumble. They used Savage a lot in this stretch on TV. He had a RAW match against Fatu the month prior which I am skipping and he has the World Title match against Yokozuna the next month which rocks. This match exceeded my expectation. It was a sort of break neck, frenetic pace. There were not a lot of high spots or narrativ…

  3. This was a house show version of the yearly WWF pay-per-view Rumble, held five days before that year's pay-per-view. In several ways, this serves as a dry run for the Rumble on pay-per-view a few days later. The final four, for example, is almost the same: with Fatu, Bret, and Shawn Michaels in at at the end. Owen Hart joins them, in a spot that would be filled by Lex Luger five days later. The story between the Hart brothers carries the second half. Even a bad Royal Rumble is still pretty fun to watch at least once, and this one is better than some of the offerings that made pay-per-view. Seeing Owen win here, just a few days away from cementing a full=-on he…

  4. I think I've seen Takao twice in my life--the 1996 Royal Rumble where he didn't do anything, and the 2000 Carny match with Jun...not a whole lot to extrapolate from that marathon. Omori is full of pep and energy in his first big showcase match. Unfortunately for him Team Misawa sees to it that his hopes and dreams are swiftly and efficiently crushed, leaving undoubtedly a bitter cynical shell of a man. Omori gets the absolute snot beaten out of him--even Akiyama gets to act like a grizzled old veteran stiffing the shit out of some young snot. Omori is in peril for a LONG time, and we must go about 15 minutes before Kawada tags in. He's doubtless still working hurt, but wh…

  5. A very dominating Maeda performance that made for an exciting watch regardless of that. The match consisted of them mostly exchanging kicks and body blows with Maeda repeteadly taking Tariel down with takedowns. Bitsadze got just enough so you couldn't describe this as a squash and I really liked the spot where he fought off Maeda's Armbar with one hand highlighting his power. ***1/2

  6. WWF Intercontinental Champion Razor Ramon vs IRS - WWF Royal Rumble 1994 I watched a bunch of Scott Hall around time of his passing, but I must have skipped this one because it is IRS. It is Razor's only meaningful IC Title defense before the Ladder Match with Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania X. He defended against Martel and IRS at some Superstars Tapings, but no RAW title defenses and this the only PPV defense of this title reign. This is a stopgap feud for Razor between winning the title in October and the Ladder Match at WrestleMania X. IRS repossessed Razor's gold chains due to tax evasion and is holding them in a briefcase. I dont think I really have a prob…

  7. What I'll remember this match for most is probably Yamamoto's second and how his advice lined up with the action. He yelled at Yamamoto to attack the body for a minute and then when Yamamoto finally did so he started celebrating, it was quite the endearing moment. When Yamamoto had control the second would yell at him to watch out, yell at him if he thought a move was coming and so on, and it lead to several cool moments, Yamamoto would get control of Han, and cautiously avoid his counters, but when he'd go for a hold himself (the wesome Reverse STF particularly stood out) he'd often get countered. Yamamoto is polished both standing and on the ground but wherever the figh…
