This was like the best possible version of a rounds-system RINGS fight between an old disgruntled ex-sumo wrestler and a younger, fatter ex-sumo wrestler. I mean I've watched a stupid amount of matches comprised of five three minute rounds the last few years. Some from RINGS, some from UWFi, some of them shoots, some of them not, but none of them this much fun. Tenryu looked every bit as great in 1994 as he did in 1993 and some of his selling was absolutely phenomenal. He sells Kitao's first flurry of Vader-ish soup bones likes he's been concussed, rolls out the ring grimacing after a leg kick, eats shots like he very much did not expect to be eating shots; he's one of th…

Jeff Jarrett vs British Bulldog - WWF RAW 12/5/94 I have a soft spot for both these guys because I started watching in the Summer of 1997. Both always come off uneven to me unless they are in the ring against Bret or Shawn. I earmarked this as something I was interested to see how it unfolded. It was very much a Jarrett match. It was very uneven. The shine was terrific and easily the best part of the match. The heat segment left something to be desired. I feel like all the criticisms laid at Shawn Michaels should be weighted tenfold against Jarrett. He really has no offense and the WWF house style does him no favors so you get a lot of chin locks. I would say the mat…

I've noticed it in Motegi matches, and it was also the case here: 90s junior wrestling was far more unpredictable and fun. Basically any exchange could lead into a crazy dive out of nowhere. When they work the mat, they work almost quasi-shootstyle. Sasuke nearly dislocates TAKA's ankle, and TAKA kicks him in the face for good measure. Later, Sasuke catches a flying TAKA with a kick and then pummels his kidney with punches. Obviously TAKAs athleticism is blowaway great, but I also loved how tightly this was worked. Check out how tight Sasuke cradled him following a moonsault. This is how you make your wrestling look competitive. Obviously the Sasuke spin kicks were great…
