I consistently enjoy early 90s AJPW, far more than I enjoy mid or late 90s AJPW. If I ever free up some time, I'll dive deeper through those first few years of the decade. Some of it is excess, as in the style hadn't eaten its own tail and force increasing levels of escalation upon itself. Some of it is that it can fly closer to the ground, closer to more traditional pro wrestling. That's not to say you have that with 80s AJPW tags, though, which are generally amorphous attempts at one-upmanship. There's a sweet spot of a few years where maybe the way the style was progressing allowed it a bit more. I don't know. I'd be curious to find out. Here is an example of that,…

Long, excellent main event to make up for that shite midcard. These two had really gotten the hang of how to beat somebody up and make it look good while at the same time selling the punishment received, and they built a really good match around these qualities. It reminded me a bit of an AJPW style match rather than typical joshi, with a slow pace and some cool move progressions. Sawai stuck to her rough housing tactics which issomething she did really well at this point, but Harley was determined to lay an epic beating on her opponent. Really punishing contest with Saito teeing off on Sawai with rapid fire kicks and both girls using some grinding holds. The finishing ru…

I love both of these guys and I love this match like I love a good cup of coffee in the morning. A little sugar from Fuchi on the mat, a little cream behind Kawada’s kicks. Unfortunately, this is clipped but when it picks up, Fuchi’s going after Kawada’s left leg with the old man stomps. He lays into a leglock, transitions into an STF, and then just starts cranking on the leg. When Kawada gets pissy, it’s one of the better things in life, with his baby headbutts and punting Fuchi out of the ring. Even when he’s lying on the ground, he’ll still try to take out Fuchi with a low kick. But Fuchi takes advantage of a prone Kawada with a nasty looking stomp. He avoids the power…

If you like mat wrangling, then this is the match for you. Rush is a burly individual with an amateur background and for over ten minutes, he and Takahashi jockey for leverage on the ground, with Rush using his size to his advantage. Takahashi's focus is the arm and the struggle for armbar is a reoccurring and often compelling theme of the match. There's a couple of slams throughout but this mostly takes place on the ground, and finishes on the ground, as Mark hits a powerslam and taps Takahashi with a nice snug side headlock. Pretty good stuff.
