September 2009

  1. World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk vs Undertaker - Breaking Point 2009 CM Punk had some serious heel heat up in Montreal. This main evented over Cena/Orton. Punk was the first superstar to break into the main event scene since Edge in 2006. His 2009-2010 run as the Straight Edge Savior was his best work in WWE. He is more famous for the Pipebomb stuff and all that, but this stuff was just heel gold. I like most of the Internet thought CM Punk was a deadman walking into this match. Instead they went the Montreal Screwjob route. Teddy tells Taker after Punk tapped to Hells Gate that Hells Gate was still banned and restarts the match. Punk grabs the Anaconda Vice before …

  2. Not much credit is thrown Takayama's way for how he adapted his style as he started to drastically slow down after his near-career ending stroke alongside general wear and tear issues. Sure, the guy was always on the lumbering side (give or take) but if you look at how he was from 2000/2004 to afterwards you can tell he's lost a few steps, he can't really rely on his freakish atheticism like before. He could still move fairly well (until around mid 2010's where he started to really pack on weight) however he had to work matches a bit smarter. This is a pretty good example of that; it's him playing a more immobile Goliath against a smaller guy. He consistently towers over …

  3. William Regal vs Goldust - Superstars 9/24/09 I am really excited I found a Youtube account that has all the Superstars episodes from 2009. Yep. This is a great 4 minute match. Built around trading awesome wristlocks. I love how Regal maintains wrist control while Goldust is firing away, Regal is selling so well especially verbally and then just when you think Regal is going to let got, he yanks Goldust down hard by the wrist. Goldust's comeback is awesome just full of energy and hard strikes. Bulldog and powerslam. Just as he is getting rolling, Zeke takes a cheapshot triggering the DQ. The Ruthless Roundtable beat him down until the motley crew of Christian, Tommy D…

  5. The perfect ROH farewell for both men. I love this match. All the nods to their previous battles are so much fun, Danielson rocks the crimson mask brilliantly & the match kicks up to an excellent 2nd gear once he starts bleeding. Nigel gunning for the kill while literally yelling "DIE" at multiple points, that's that shit. It is not their best match, but it is a terrific way to cap off their legendary ROH rivalry. ****1/4
