So a while back I remember reading the saga of SMOEATER, who had worked the people on a message board (Wrestling Classics?) into believing that he was an old WWWF insider or some such. Another site had a pretty comprehensive timeline and commentary on the whole charade. Anyone know where I could find it?

Here's the list (lifted from George Mayfield's old site) with Jeff's comments from the 1989 WON yearbook. As the DVDVR '80s project picks up steam again, I figured it would be worth looking over again. I'll reply w/ my questions/comments/etc. in another post. ------------------ I tried to pick the top 20 in order, but before that I have 80 matches listed in no particular order. Where ever possible I ll list the date and site of the matches. Almost all of these matches are available on videotape. Any true wrestling fan owes it to them selves to at least try and witness them. Riki Choshu vs Killer Khan (7/31/86, Tokyo, Japan) This was a brutal Texas Death…

From the topic title, I know this doesn't sound like a wrestling thread, but bear with me. For those of you unfamiliar with the website, go there, search for your favorite musician or song, and navigate the site a little bit. Would a pro wrestling site following this same format be a good idea? Curious your thoughts.

Bockwinkel v. Lawler talk from the other thread has me curious about what the best thing to trickle out of the archives has been so far? I can't remember anything this interesting, though some of the 80/81 MSG cards have been interesting to me. I've only had the service for two years though. Anything top the Lawler/Bock match?

Last night, I was watching Dusty v Flair, from I think Starrcade 84. Dusty was a fantastic talker, and he had a lot of charisma in the ring. Crowds loved him, especially when he would do his dances. But it cannot be denied that he had a less-than-optimum physique, and the look is so important these days for getting over. I wonder if a young Dusty Rhodes, given his look alone, would make it as a main eventer today? Would Vince even give him a look? The closest example I can think up would be Foley, I suppose. But he had to do some insane things to really make it big, from FMW Deathmatches to the HINC. Anyway, a little latenight idle speculation. . .

The WWE produced DVD on the Triumph and Tragedy of WCCW was originally set to release 9/18, but a check on Amazon indicates it was pushed back to December. The offical WWE DVD page still lists the 9/18 date, and it's curiously the only non-PPV release without a clickable link to further info/matchlisting/purchase details. Granted, current events would make it awkward to release a WCCW documentary now, but it seems like this might end up on the back burner for the foreseeable future.

Whatever the emergency for Benoit was must have been pretty serious, considering that it would take a lot for someone like him to miss a scheduled match on pay-per-view. Meltzer later added that Rick Martel is at the show for the same reasons Race and Magnum are.

Watching the 1991 Royal Rumble show, I was pretty impressed with the overall quality of the show. But one thing that really stood out for me was the face turn of Virgil. I really think this was one of the best face turns pulled off, especially since it came without Virgil saying a word. Fans picked up on the relationship between Ted DiBiase and Virgil pretty quickly, and the instant they started teasing that Virgil was tired of being DiBiase's lackey, fans bought into it quickly. They did a couple angles on Superstars in which Virgil appeared ready to break away from DiBiase but didn't. Then came the Royal Rumble, in which the two faced Dusty and Dustin Rhodes. …

I have always wondered how do guys like Dave Meltzer and every other wrestling journalist/reporter/site adminstrator get there info?(apart from stealing it from each other) I would have thought the agents would tell the talent to keep quiet and not expose much if anything, but no everyday these insider websites have new gossip or spoilers. Can someone explain this to me? Backstage gossip( I can't edit the freakin typo thread name I made)

1986 Midnight Express vs. Rock N Roll Express (2/2/86) - Man, the 2nd time I have seen the Irish whip butt bump to partner in 2 days. Eaton takes a painful looking backdrop on the floor. The first few minutes saw both teams tagging in and out with neither really gaining an advantage. Gibson plays FIP here but I was a little disappointed that the MX weren't more heelish or using more cheating tactics. Don't get me wrong, the match was ok but it feels like we have been here too many times before. The most memorable thing about this was the MX winning the World Title. I am going to throw this up as a nomination but I am not excited about it. Dusty Rhodes vs. Tull…

Essentially a repost of an old article I wrote in the dying days of the TSM main site, but I thought it'd make for good discussion. Credit for the bulk of this article goes to the fine posters over at the Kayfabe Memories Message Board, the Pro Wrestling Chronicle website, the Slam! Wrestling website, and my frazzled memory. Honestly, there's so much in that head of mine at this point that I have trouble remembering fact from fiction these days. NOTE: This is hardly a complete list, and as such there is no ranking system of any sort. I’m just listing guys in the order I thought of them, and I know there are a ton I’m missing. I'm also providing YouTube clips whe…

  17. Someone recently uploaded a boatload of old WOL episodes to DVDVR, and during one show the subject of Backlund came up. I'd known before that Dave wasn't a fan of Bob, but he really let it out, saying that Backlund's popularity was all Vince, and that he was carried to all of his good matches. Watching Will's best of Backlund set, I'm wondering what Dave was on, or how many Backlund matches he's seen. I'm at a loss for any other Ivan Koloff singles match as good as Bob's match with him from the first disc, and other than the Boot Camp match with Slaughter, has Iron Sheik had any other really good singles matches? Granted, Bob's methodical style of working isn't …

I guess it's because of Cena's injury, but this has surprisingly flown way under the radar considering the guy was WWE champion for the better part of the last 2 years or so. The way they arraigned this set is kind of weird: Disc 1 is the standard documentary stuff, with the extras being a look at all the various cars Cena owns. Disc 2 is the matches, which for a 3 DVD set is kind of odd that this is the only disc that has any. Disc 3 is entirely (unless I missed some easter eggs) "5 Questions With the Champ" segments from WWE.com. That's right, they devoted an entire disc on a DVD release of the company's biggest star to a throwaway joke segment on the company's w…

I have been watching some Portland lately and I thought I would post some of my nomination posts. Some are generic recap stuff written with the purpose of reminding me which match I am discussing for final list making. Others are just a couple of lines giving affirmation to the match. 1980 Buddy Rose vs. Rick Martel (2/3 falls) (4/26/80) - Buddy is wearing a mask/wig combo for the match. 1st fall has some nice legwork from Buddy. Awesome spot where MArtle gives Buddy an atomic drop but his leg is damaged from all of the legwork. This allows Buddy to work on the leg some more and get the easy submission. This first fall was pretty good almost all due to Buddy. 2n…

  21. The Warrior vs Savage from Mania is one of the best pro matches I've ever seen. Savage was the best ever in the WWF for making his matches feel important and epic and this was no different. Of course, things are amplified here because of the career vs career factor at play. Savage through his work ethic, wrestling, selling and body mannerisms was a terrific wrestler. Body language is something I'm big on in wrestling but it's an awful hard thing to describe. But just as one example -- Savage is well known for pointing towards the sky before coming off of the top rope. It's an act that has been copied by almost every fan mimicking wrestling at sometime in their life. It's …

  22. I'm listening to the latest Adam & Mike show from F4W and they are calling Bryan Alvarez to task over his recent show with Zach Arnold. Basically, the Bryan & Zach show talked the doom & gloom of the current Japanese wrestling scene and both basically acted as if the business was so depressed over there that it wasn't worth covering. Alvarez even admitted that he had no clue who won the Champion Carnival and when Zach told him they both kind of laughed it off as if it was indicative of low business instead of an attempt to build the future. Zach also made such brilliant statements about how Hustle was the #1 promotion in Japan and that's how everyone over t…
