Holy cow, I wrote a review. Kind of by the numbers, but I'm not a creative writer, or even a good one Chigusa Nagayo vs. Devil Masami (8/22/85) This was pro-wrestling in its purest form. It wasn't about good vs. evil or trying to avoid or hit a specific move. It was about two competitors trying to win a wrestling match. And both Chigusa and Devil really, really wanted to win. Everything was fought for, nothing was given. Every early mat-hold was contested. Chigusa got the short end of the stick early on, but she never stopped trying to fight her way out of Devil's holds. And why wouldn't she, the holds hurt right? They sure looked like it, as both girls did a p…

First, this classic statement from ConanRulesNBC on the WC board: Then, when Meltzer brings up Gabe Sapolsky's name, Conan replies with: And then there are these gems from a message board that is on a pro-Vince Russo website: Some of this stuff really makes you wonder about people.

>>1974 >>#1 - Jack Brisco v Giant Baba (AJPW, 12/02) **** I liked this a lot, mainly for the various ways they found to stretch each other on the mat, and this also had a nice, big match feel, which it should, considering it's a title change. I don't think it's quite on the level that I'd say a MOTY candidate should be, but it's definitely on the next tier down. I still have tons and tons of '74 to watch.

CMLL, 10/15/05 - Atlantis vs. Mistico God Mistico fucking sucked here. CMLL, late 2005 - Universo 2000, Pierroth & co. vs. Perros del Mal feud This feud was the best thing going on TV in late 2005, and those are episodes filled with Santo in his seasonal return to Arena Mexico. Hate filled brawls, really like old Mid South wrestling, with plenty of outside the ring brawling, foreign object shots, and even some pretty great looking dives by guys who are not good at dives (great as in "that hurts" not "that had a lot of flips and great execution"). It's a shame most of the guys in this feud either are too old, or just not good on their own, because these awesome m…

>>1976 >>#1 - Billy Robinson v Giant Baba (AJPW, 07/24) ***** Best match of the 70s by a large, large margin. Incredibly modern, in that it could take place today and fans wouldn't be disappointed by the action at all. I think that even the best 70s AJPW stuff is typically going to require patience from the viewer, but this match was such an enjoyable breeze. Anyone who has enjoyed any matches from AJPW in the 90s owes it to themselves to see where many of the ideas appear to have originated. I don't think I've seen any other 70s matches built around so many false finishes, but the coolest thing about this is that this isn't a superficial match where the a…

Lots of award analysis + Dave losing his mind while possibly drunk and writing a hilarious analysis of the WWE HOF candidates + being 26(!) pages = quality.

Personally I'd like to see Yoshihiro Takyama win the belt again and actually hold it for a decent amount of time. He's got the credibility with the fans and would really do a good job as champion IMO. Having him win it from Misawa plays off the history between the two (Misawa beat Takayama for the belt before) and you can build one of the young guys up to where he can challenge Takayama for it and if he wins you get a credible new main eventer. Of course I don't see him winning the belt and certainly he wouldn't hold it for very long. Taking into account his freelance status and he obviously loves working in as many different promotions that can afford him and if the…

Inspired by a thread over at DVD-VR where the question was asked why you love Smackdown. Simply put, who are your current favorites and why? For me, personally: Smackdown: William Regal & Dave Taylor are definitely my favorite act on the show right now. I love when WWE presents someone as a wrestler, as if to say "this guy is a REAL wrestler, unlike what we normally do" and they are the perfect twosome to be a no-nonsense rough tag-team. Long time love for Matt Hardy, Finlay and Benoit too, though Benoit vs. Chavo has been a really boring feud for me because I'm not down with the whole Vickie Guerrero deal. Kendrick & London and Gregory Helms have been my oth…

This was recently added to my blog, as I'm doing LUCHA LIBRE WEEK there, but I wanted to include it here as well to make sure everyone saw it. MS1 v Sangre Chicana - CMLL 09/23/83 - Hair Match This may very well be the greatest singles match of all time. It certainly takes the best elements from other great matches -- the fire and underdog spirit of Hokuto/Kandori from Dreamslam I, the hatred of Flair/Funk from Bash '89 and the nuclear heat and emotion of a typical Hulk Hogan match in the 1980s -- and puts them all in one place. Where this match ultimately succeeds, however, is in creating its own identity through the participants. The match starts with MS1 arroga…

I was reading Meltzer's breakdown of the wrestler of the year. It was pretty interesting, but I don't think it's right to compare MMA to pro-wrestling. Athletic commissions don't allow worked and shoot fights on the same bill so really MMA fighters should be not allowed on the Obsever award ballots. I mean Dave should should have seperate categories for the 2. They should have Pro Wrestler of the year, MMA fighter of the year etc.

from WO: There was much LOLZ-ing over them getting a low rating around Christmas time, I guess the folks who hate TNA but can't stop watching it every week so they can bitch about it are telling their friends to watch and bitch as well.

I was watching a Backlund/HBK match from Goodhelmet's excellent Backlund comp the other day and Hays just buried him in commentary. He called Backlund ugly, old, unathletic, and not the all-american boy. Lord Al was rooting for the heel HBK the whole match. Anyone know what the backstory is there?

Credit puroresufan.com "Yomiuri Sports reveals this morning that New Japan has succeeded in acquiring the "super-important foreigner" that Simon promised after the Dome show. Former Olympic gold medalist, Kurt Angle, is set to make his New Japan debut on 2/18 at Sumo Hall after Yomiuri reported that an agreement has been reached between the sides" I'd love to see how the calling of the match would be handled if Angle faced someone like Nagata. Still, this ain't a bad deal for New Japan, as Angle means infinitely more than Brock. But it'll also be interesting to see how Angle's bullshit is put up with by New Japan staff and talent.

Besides Carlito's speech about the Rosie/Donald skit, the bit with Rated RKO taking everyone's DX sign reminded me of the bit in either this week's WON or last week's where Dave mentioned they were cracking down on signs at a house show and how silly it was.
