Hi. I found the list of the best workers of the 80s, published in WON yearbooks. These lists are not the end of the year awards, but 40/50 people watched a lot of tapes from all over the world, and they sent to Meltzer their ranking of the best workers. It's similar to GWE project. This is the list of 1982: 1 Ric Flair 2 Jimmy Snuka 3 Ted DiBiase 4 Harley Race 5 Bob Backlund 6 Bruiser Brody 7 Hulk Hogan 8 Nick Bockwinkel 9 Roddy Piper 10 Stan Hansen 11 Paul Orndorff 12 The Superstar 13 Dory Funk 14 Andre the Giant 15 Dusty Rhodes 16 Jack Brisco 17 Don Muraco 18 Sgt. Slaughter 19 Antonio Inoki 20 Terry Funk 21 Jumbo Tsuruta 22 Tiger Mask…

It struck me recently how much I enjoy matches that run a little shorter than you would expect them to go or where wrestlers leave a lot on the table. And I realized I prefer matches that maybe give too little as opposed to bigger matches that may have a bigger story, more ambition, more conclusion. In essence, I prefer the steps to the destination in a lot of cases. Anybody feel similar? Does anyone feel similar or have a different view?

  4. Don't want to hijack the ROH/AJPW thread with NJPW talk, so I thought this would be a cool topic on its own. 80s NWA was guys trying to speed up the mat-based style dominant up to around the 70s. 90s AJPW was Baba trying to cut the fat off the NWA style while also seeing how it could be pushed further. 00s ROH was tape traders aping AJPW while also incorporating influences from other wrestling they grew up with. 10s NJPW was what happened when those tape traders got a shot at working an NJPW that had already started aping 90s AJPW. Who did it better? My thoughts: 80s NWA has always a bit rough around the edges to me. It was a necessary bridge for the wrestling lan…

  5. Good morning. Except Cena, Lesnar and the part timers, who do you think was the biggest star at his peak, since 2009? In my opinion the biggest name are Bryan and Jeff Hardy. Maybe, also Punk and Orton should be into the discussion. However, I don't think that they were as big as them at their peaks, althought today, they are probably more known among casual fans because of the longevity (especially Orton) What is your choise between Jeff Hardy and Daniel Bryan? And why? Do you think that google trends dates are important or not to choose who is a bigger star among two wrestlers? For example, Hardy was more searched in 2009 than Bryan in 2014 worldwide, …

This was brought up a bit in the Meltzer thread so I thought it might be interesting to talk about. What do you think is the most overrated match that's been given the full 5 stars by Dave? To make this less obvious, none of the 6 or 5.75 matches count. I personally would say either Tiger Mask-Dynamite Kid or Cole/Bucks-Ospreay/Ricochet/Sydal. Tiger-Dynamite was certainly a revolutionary match for its time, but I think it's aged rather poorly. It just doesn't measure up to the later high-flying showcases of guys like Mysterio or Liger. I would think that a match rated 5 stars should be timeless, something you could watch years, even decades later and still enjoy T…

Technical wrestling and mat work has admittedly never been my favorite style (I've always been partial to brawls and bombfests). However, there are a lot of technical wrestlers today that I've come to admire and enjoy the more and more I see of their work. At its best, technical wrestling is almost like a science and there are many different ways to approach it. So I thought it might be interesting to analyze and break down some of the best technical wrestlers in the world today. Zack Sabre Jr: Sabre is a rather polarizing wrestler. There's been a lot of criticism thrown his way about only doing flashy stuff, killing time for the first half of the match, only maki…

  10. Hello all, I was rewatching this feud the last day or so in my spare time on World(although the 05.08.1982 match is the only one missing from NJPW World for some reason so I had to find it on dailymotion since I don't have my DVDs with me). After rewatching them all for the first time in many years I thought I'd ask some of folks here which one they enjoyed the most from this fondly remembered series? I know that online years later the whole series was debated and picked apart and all it's flaws discussed and I'm sure some here don't hold the matches as fondly as the popular opinion but myself even watching these back with those criticisms still enjoyed them and t…

  11. I'm not a lucha expert but I enjoy watching CMLL. And I was just watching and thinking about how you never really hear anyone talk about Atlantis as one of the true legends of the business. I know he's in the WON HOF and is very well-regarded, but to me he still doesn't seem to be talked about with enough reverence. Help educate me here if I'm wrong anywhere here. He's been a consistent main event guy for a major promotion for 35 years, headlining who knows how many shows that drew well. He was a spectacular flyer in his youth, I think would be considered a great wrestler at his peak, and to me is still enjoyable in his 50's. And to cap it, I know for sure he headlined t…

The devil arrives at your door on January 1st 2018. He offers you two choices. 1. From this day forth, you may watch any wrestling that occurs. But only once. And you may watch any wrestling prior to this date - once - as long as you have not previously watched it. (The Devil is telling you that you cannot rewatch any wrestling ever again). 2. From this day forth, you are only allowed to watch wrestling you have seen previously. You will not see any wrestling from the year 2018, or subsequent years until you die. In terms of wrestling prior to 2018, you may only rewatch footage you have already seen. On the plus side, you can watch this footage as often as you li…

I know that John Williams was part of Pro Wrestling Torch staff during the 90s, and he was also a user of this forum and of Wrestlingclassics. I found these two Gordy lists of Kenta Kobashi and Shawn Michaels. I think that these two Gordy lists are the most complete ever made by someone. He talked in depth about every single aspect. This is Kobashi's Gordy list: There was a thread asking about Kenta Kobashi. Since he's going to be voted into the WON HOF this year, this is the one chance I have to do this in a sense that it will be relevant. So here goes. Gordy List: Kenta Kobashi ------------------------------- 1. Was he ever regarded as the best draw i…

  18. Hi. Today I read the WON HOF 2015 issue and I noted that Bryan Danielson got only the 12 % of total votes among the current wrestlers, his peers. Obiouvsly he got more votes in 2016, when he entered in. (he was 7th among wrestlers, however I don't know the percentage). Contrariwise, wrestlers like Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit are/were more respected among their peers, in fact Angle got tons of votes in 2004, by both current and retired wrestlers, while Benoit got 73% of total votes among current wrestlers. So, what is the reason in your opinion? For example, here, Bryan defeated Benoit in the last comparison that I opened, but I don't think that among their pee…

I have begun watching Michinoku Pro from the 90s which is a blind spot for me. I know the general players, Great Sasuke, Super Delfin, Taka Michinoku, Dick Togo, but I still have no clue about the storylines. What I am most interested in is how Super Delphin turned babyface and linked up with Great Sasuke against the evil Kaientai? How did Kaientai form? How did Taka Michinoku & Sho Funaki join to create Kaientai DX? Basically any key angles or storyline developments from the beginning of the promotion in 1993 to Super Delphin & Co. leaving in 1999 would be much appreciated. Thanks!

So I thought with news starting to come in on matches and cards I would just start a thread for discussion of all the weekends events. Who all is going? My wife and I are going. I am doing all the WWN stuff Friday (progress, Evolve, supershow, Janela), Progress on Sat. and mania on Sunday. I MAY splurge on second hand tickets for NXT depending on what else I am getting into sat, if I am alive after Friday, and what the card looks like. Some Cool Stuff Already Announced. EVOLVE 102 – Thursday, April 5th – 8pm – New Orleans, LA Daisuke Sekimoto & Munenori Sawa vs. Timothy Thatcher & WALTER AR Fox vs. Will Ospreay EVOLVE 103 – Friday, April 6th…

  22. On and off, I spent the last few months going over newspaper clippings, old newsletters, & archived web pages as well as sending emails, making calls, and filing public record requests to try to determine the actual attendance in the Pontiac Silverdome at WrestleMania III. My latest article at Deadspin is the result of that research: https://deadspin.com/how-many-people-were-actually-at-wrestlemania-iii-a-de-1824178481 Loss said I could use this as a conversation starter, so let's do that: In light of the newspaper reports, Steve Harms' comments, weird Observer discrepancies/coincidences, and everything else, what does everyone think the number was? 93,173? 78,500…

I was watching a match from early 1995 AAA recently and was thinking to myself, "Damn, Eddy looks better here than I ever remember him being when teaming with Love Machine." And it got me wondering if that was when he first became a great worker, and also if there was anyone out there you could pinpoint the moment or match when it happened for. So yeah. The moment when you thought X went from good to great (or, if you'd prefer, from bad to good, or whatever).

  24. Hi people, I opened the third poll "Who is a better in ring performer?" I decided to make comparisons between wrestlers considered the ability as in ring performers, that include workrate, in ring psychology, storytelling, selling, cleaning in the execution of the moves, quality of matches. You should try to vote not your favourite wrestlers, but you should vote the wrestler that you think is a better in ring performer. In few words you should try to be as objective as possible. However if you think that the wrestlers are great in ring performers in the same way, and it's impossible to choose who is better than the other, you should vote the option number 3, p…

Hey guys, sorry to post this in this folder, not sure where else to post, but I wanted to know if I am wasting my time on this board? It would seem that the majority of the posters here ignore my posts. So I was wondering why. Do people here think I am a troll or something? Many times I see the exact same points made by other people that people respond to, following my posts. No hard feelings here if I am on a block list or something. I just need confirmation so I can determine if I should stop wasting my energy posting here or not. Have away at it the very few left that can read this post. Thanks guys for reading.
