  1. This is something I've been thinking about while reading through this classic old thread. For years, Jeff Bowdren's list of 80's matches was the defining list among tape traders. Well, we've come a long way baby together over the past decade. Throughout the DVDVR Best of the 80's project, we've been able to formulate a consensus on this material. Even as more and more footage becomes available, I still believe we well on our way to coming up with the definitive "Best Matches of the 1980's" at this point. With the Wrestling Matches Hall of Fame starting up, it seems like perfect timing to get everyone's feedback on the 1980's results. With nominations and voting c…

  2. Dylan wrote a thing about Kenta Kobashi and Shawn Michaels. He said that one reason I was rejecting the comparison was because it might force me to self-reflect a little too much. I think at the heart of that comment was a critque of 90s AJPW from Dylan that says something like "it's not all that different from self-conscious 00s WWE and indie stuff that YOU Parv criticise and rail on!" I could be reading it wrong, but I think that's what he was getting at. I am musing on this, but I thought it might be an interesting thing to ponder: what in your view are the differences between the huge matches between Misawa, Kawada, Kobashi and so on, and the 00s wank-a…

  3. I think this is something that could be a lot of fun. I this thread, nominate any awesome matches you see (that took place in August 2017) with a little reason why. We can discuss the match, people can approve and disagree. Sometime later on, we will pull the top nominations and do a poll. This is something that can keep going with a new thread every month. Anyways, it's August, what is great? I'll start it off with the only August match I have on my database, so far. Nomination: John Cena vs Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Smackdown, 8/1) This gave a glimpse of what could be a great rivalry, as they chemistry is really good. The charisma really stood out here…

  4. Started by marrklarr,

I know Harley Race is legendary for being the baddest motherfucker in every dressing room he set foot in. (One of my favorite stories comes from Flair's autobiography in which Flair was set to defend the NWA title somewhere overseas, and there was some concern that the promoters there would stage a screwjob finish to steal the belt. Harley was sent along to be Flair's manager with the understanding that as long as he was there no one was going to take the strap away from Flair.) But I was wondering if there was a discussion to be had as to who were the legitimate badasses in wrestling history. Who were the guys that the other guys just NEVER fucked with? Andre come…

  5. All right, keeping my mind off Flair for a bit - I've been going off of a lot of memories when talking about classic AJPW and how I think it's a level better than modern NJPW and Dave is committing wrestling sacrilege by putting NJPW ahead of it. Let's dig in and watch this stuff back to back and see if I really disagree with Dave and if so by how much. I'm picking a random Misawa-Kawada match and comparing it with Tanahashi-Naito from Friday, which to me was one of the better NJPW matches I've seen. I try to keep the PBP here interesting with commentary injected. Final thoughts at the end. This is a long post but it has to be. Misawa-Kawada (7/29/93): 26 minute match s…

  6. Started by soup23,

I wanted to start this topic since it won’t derail the Greatest Wrestler of All Time Project thread (another worthy project that I will be participating in). Anyway, I want to create a pro wrestling match hall of fame. I think the scope of this could be dwindled where if you don’t want to vote for a certain region, you don’t have to. Here is how I envision the project being worked out but I am open to any suggestions. Timeframe: I think October – November is a good time frame to run this every year. It comes off the heels of the WON HOF vote, is a down period for modern wrestling usually, and is right before the year end lists and rewatching for MOTY ramps up. …

  7. So, for this week's podcast, we will be doing our Death of "TNA" show, talking about the fifteen years provided under the banner of Total Nonstop Action. For this monumental occasion, we would like you to write your personal eulogy for the TNA brand name - thoughts on their proudest moments, perhaps? Maybe a personal experience, or just your general opinion on the trials and tribulations of the company and where it stands in the history of wrestling. Either way, we're looking for a sense of closure as the Jarrett-led GFW begins anew, so what are your final, definitive thoughts on the 15 years of TNA? As always, the best contributions will be read on the show and y…

  8. This is strictly for my fellow Memphis obsessives here. Scott Bowden has found audio from the mid-70s when Memphis wrestling was on WHBQ. This is classic stuff - we hear so much about the days of Lawler and Sam Bass torturing Lance Russell every week and Lawler being such an obnoxious punk heel but to my knowledge not a lot of it exists. Anyways, here's two he's put up - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhbdOj_Pm6U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsbdSMFO268

  10. Have you? I have. To the front of my mind I can think of at least 3 times I've gotten choked up watching wrestling- Kenta Kobashi's return from cancer in 07, Kobashi's retirement match, and Daniel Bryan's retirement speech. So what moments in wrestling have gotten you choked up or made you shed a tear?

  11. Started by GOTNW,

The star rating system has been the one most commonly used in wrestling criticism but with its most famous user adding a sixth one and the whole thing breaking down I do think it's a time for a thread like this. What do your ratings mean? What represents an all time classic, a MOTY, something that would make a top ten of a given year, something that would make a top fifty of a given year and so on. Does using star ratings instead of plain old numbers change the way people give them out? Could you freely convert your start ratings to numbers? Do you use some other system and if so what constitutes it, give some examples of matches you've rated with those ra…

  12. I got this message on my Facebook yesterday from my friend Dave " I realized I fucked up and choose the worst time to get out of wrestling, I want to check up on some good matches from 2015 to now. do you know any WWE/NXT, NJPW, ROH, Lucha Underground matches in mind I should look at?" What should he watch first?

  13. I think a nice thread talking about the live wrestling you are watching and going to watch might be a good idea. If you list what you are going to, maybe someone in your area might not be aware of it, or maybe you can meet up? Also, you can throw in little reviews or thoughts on live shows you seen. Sometimes I feel the live wrestling doesn't get talked about much.

Has anyone heard of this previously? Was it taped? Any good?

  17. So, for this week's podcast, we're looking to discuss different people's first memories of pro wrestling, and would like to get some feedback to hear yours. The question being not only what your first ever memory of exposure to wrestling, but what was your first impression, how did you feel about it at the time, how did it influence you as a fan, and in hindsight, how do you feel about that same first moment? As always, the best contributions will be read on the air and we'll be crediting you accordingly. So what was it for you? EDIT - Our show talking all about First Memories of Pro Wrestling, featuring many of your contributions, is now online and available to lis…

  18. So who would you guys say is the best wrestler to never have that big career defining run? Every wrestler who did well in the PWO GWE had at least 1 run where they drew huge crowds, won titles, made themselves synomous with a promotion, territory, or region. Who are some guys who we consider all time greats but never really drew money or had that big title run one would associate with being an all time great.

  19. I have been thinking about this lately with going through some of my stuff and contemplating buying a blu ray burner. I have about 6 external drives with roughly 10 terabytes between them(aside from my already hundreds of discs and about 50-100 VHS tapes I have left over from my VHS days) and I have been looking at cloud storage(which I'm leery of) and burning more DVDs which is mainly how I've been doing it but I've accumulated such an amount of online files that I think it'd be more financially and space conservative to use the larger data holding blu ray discs. I really prefer having the physical copies as I've experienced data loss before and if one of my drives …

  20. Loss's comment in the wwe style thread got me thinking I know someone who stopped watching wrestling because The Rockers did synchronized super kicks and that would never happen if it was real. So yes. when I was a kid my brother had a friend named Alex who would watch the PPVs with us and talk wrestling all the time. He was a gigantic Tatanka mark. When Tatanka lost to Ludvig Borga he stopped watching completely. Never watched again to my knowledge. This was always strange to me as a die hard fan. Couldn't relate to it at all. so what are other random reasons given when people stop watching?

  23. Saw a post comparing Gedo's NJPW booking to old school Memphis. That made me want to talk about bookers and their strengths and peak angles that define their particular style. Let me start it off with a booker I'm very familiar with: Gabe Sapolsky. STRENGTHS 1. Supercard Construction - Especially starting in Mania weekend 2006 in Chicago, Gabe had a knack for creating stacked cards. The amount of quality wrestling that went into a lot of the big 05-07 cards was really quite fantastic. The 06 Chicago Mania weekend cards, Supercard of Honor III, Man Up. 2. Title Contender Hype - I always thought that Sapolsky was very good at creating the proper clamour for the people he…
