So for this week's podcast, we're attempting to Rebook WCW in 1993, and would love to get your thoughts on what you'd have done to try and prevent one of the worst years in company history. If you had to take control in February 93 (after Bill Watts was turfed out), what moves would you make to turn things around for the rest of the year? The talent seems to be there - the returning Ric Flair after his WWF stint, the awesome Big Van Vader in his prime, the red-hot Hollywood Blonds, along with other top names like Sting, Rick Rude, Davey Boy Smith, Cactus Jack, Dustin Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham, Underneath you have guys like Paul Orndorff, C…

  3. Spawned off the Roman thread. With TV numbers and houses meaning less and less, merchandise sales seems to be the main indicator if so and so wrestler can draw. WWE even mentions it publicly So is it the new "drawing money"? Or do the other factors still matter? Is it just one revenue stream and not the sole indicator?

  4. Started by Cox,

I went to this year's Super 8 for the first time since 2003, when Paul London beat Chance Beckett in the finals, but I came out convinced that Chance Beckett was a future star and Paul London was a flash in the pan propped up by a few decent ROH matches. Whoops. Anyway, with tournaments in indie wrestling having become fairly prominent since the Super 8, I thought it would be fun to check in and see what the OG indie tournament was up to all of these years later. Now, to be clear, while it is still ECWA's premier wrestling event of the year, it's not quite the same ECWA you may remember from the late 90's/early 00's. Jim Kettner retired a few years ago and the new ECW…

Forgive me if this thread exists elsewhere on the board. Feel free to point me in the right direction. I was hoping to start a discussion on what you might consider some of the greatest individual championship reigns in the history of wrestling. Feel free to use any criteria you see fit (matches, hot angles, drawing power, etc.). You can point it any championship as well: tags, women's, etc. Allow me to start things off by naming some off the top of my head: Bryan Danielson - ROH World Championship '06 John Cena - WWE Championship '07 Mitsuharu Misawa - Triple Crown '92-'94

  6. Much like Florida, I am swamped with footage from WCCW and trying to prepare a one hour primer on the history of the promotion. I want to include promos and character segments as well as matches. There's so much though, which to pick is a bit hard. I am thinking the Freebirds heel turn and Jimmy Garvin valet for a day are must haves but I'd also like to get Kevin, Kerry, Gart Hart, Kabuki, Devastation Inc, Brody and the Dynamic Duo in there as well. Any ideas on what I might include in a one hour WCCW primer? Thanks in advance.

For a while, I've been entertaining the idea of compiling a list of desert island matches that would be broad enough to serve as a crash course for those just getting into pro graps. After some thought, I've managed to put together a list of 50 matches that pretty well encapsulate what I like most about wrestling. And with the discussion on the most recent Wrestling Culture podcast about favorite matches that you could watch over and over again, I felt the time was right for a favorite matches vanity list thread. As the subtitle indicates, this isn't just intended for discussion of how awesome/stupid my list is. Feel free to contribute your own. And it needn't be 50. 10 o…

  9. I'm not sure why, but I found it fascinating that Schiavone said he'd never watched the Flair-Steamboat trilogy. Around the time of Warrior's passing, Cornette said he didn't watch any WWF in the late 80s, despite taping and keeping up with most other groups. Is it that that generation looked at it as work, even though they'd grown up as fans, and didn't really bother to plug the gaps on highly-touted stuff? Do younger on-air staff make more of an effort to keep up? I'm not sure what else to say about all this yet, hoping to get some good replies to steer this a bit.

  11. They discussed this on WOR over the weekend and it seems like an interesting concept. The pros: - Nothing would have to be rushed - More people would get on the show. - The show obviously wouldn't be 7 hours - The fans there are staying for the whole weekend anyway, so selling tickets to it shouldn't be an issue - It would hurt the various indy shows running there which is a plus for WWE - Could lead to more publicity. There'd be two nights to talk about and it would certainly keep the IWC busy. - It would be pretty original. There's no major wrestling event that has done this aside from Collison in Korea and AJW Dreamslam which ran a week …

http://www.thecubsfan.com/cmll/2017/04/08/aaas-joaquin-roldan-has-passed-away/ AAA's Joaquin Roldan passed away at 63 today, apparently of cancer. He's been seen less recently and this probably explains why he was suddenly inducted into the AAA Hall of Fame last year when he was a heel on screen character, which didn't make a lot of sense at the time.

  14. I've been looking up babyface managers and there really weren't that many. The main ones that come up are: (Not mentioned but should be) Richard Lee's face Moondogs in 1993 - This combination was fantastic. Lee could talk and often served as the punching bag for the team to keep various feuds going. What Lee did in Memphis in 1993 was absolutely awesome and was probably the best managerial run in the 90's. Albano's face run in 1985/1986ish - Haven't really seen as much of it as I probably should but it seems like he did decent, but obviously not his peak Cornette's Dynamic Dudes run - We all know how this played out Cornette's MX vs Heyman's OMX feud - One…

  15. I understand that Japanese booking philosophy was very nativist with the general archetype being to bring in foreigners from all over the world to face the major stars of the promotion and that had been the booking philosophy dating back to Rikidozan. My understanding is that changed in All Japan with Riki Choshu invasion in 1985, which was the first native vs native feud in that promotion and due to the success of Choshu invasion angle: Jumbo vs Tenryu was born and the rest was history. So my questions are the following: 1. Were there ever any major native vs native matches in All Japan pre-Choshu? I am pretty sure the answer is no, but I just wanted to check. …

  16. So anyway for a future episode of my podcast a friend of mine who's a referee in New England indies is going to be a guest. We are going to look at some of the best refereed matches in wrestling history. That's kind of a blind spot for me. I love Tommy Young, but if someone asked to come up with say 4-5 of the greatest refereeing performances in wrestling history, I'd draw a blank. Want Brian Hildebrand in there too naturally. Anyone have any opinions? Tommy Young clobbering Cornette I love, but I cannot recall which match that was.

  17. I've been curious about this topic for a long time. Puro, by most fans, is considered the best wrestling. It's constantly praised above all other wrestling. On the other hand, lucha is just ignored or mocked and gets praise only from really small circles. GWE was a great example where puro dominated things and a luchador couldn't crack the top 10. Does this come down to coverage from places like Dave or that lucha was developed differently, while puro was developed like American wrestling? It's just very odd to me.

Quick question. I was making my way through the Memphis DVDVR set and watched the no dq, empty arena, and Dory Funk Jr. matches, but saw a promo of Funk mentioning an upcoming cage match after the empty arena affair. Are there any other matches between these two from the time period that made tape? Thanks!

  21. With Wrestlemania 33 fast approaching, what is your pick for greatest match in Wrestlemania history? Saddened to hear of his passing. I loved the Barry Windham feud. His angle with Beefcake was really hardcore for the time.

  23. Multi-man matches were always a pretty cool idea to me but let's face it - they are usually treated as unimportant, filler, skippable matches. I think multi-man matches have a lot of benefits to them: - You can do the usual 1v1 storyline/match, but you can layers on top of it - You can form new partners or new feuds - You can stir shit up by having partners/teammates in these - You can tease a match or even have the guys interact a bit, but still keep them away - You can add more fun to the mix if you put titles on the line, especially in situations where the champ doesn't need to get pinned - You can protect people With all of that being s…

  25. We've got all sorts of threads related to "great matches." We've got the Match of the Decade and Match of the Year Threads, the 5 Star thread, threads covering the 80s, 90s, 00s, specific regions etc etc. But in GWE, we often talked about how "great performances" were more important than "great matches." So figure we need the "great performances" thread as well. With that said, what are some of your favorite or what do you think are some of the the best individual performances in matches? Additionally, what are some of the matches yall think of when you think of "great performances in not-great matches?"
