  2. I've been reading around and watching 70s and 80s AJPW recently. I have a few questions / comments about the top titles. It's hard to figure this stuff out when they are talking Japanese. There was: NWA International Heavyweight Championship - Dory Funk Jr held this from 1981, but ultimately this ends up as "Jumbo's belt" for much of the 80s. Am I right in thinking this was basically their world title? PWF World Heavyweight Championship - this one seemed to change hands a bit more often, and Baba held it for a long time in the 1970s. The International title, that Dory won in 81, was not active in the 70s because a dude called Kintaro Ohki had essentially buggere…

Saw a few different trustworthy accounts on twitter report that lucha legend Mocho Cota has died at the age of 62. I know he was a favorite among some of the posters here and did fairly well in the GWE poll for a guy who didn't seem to get much love before the 80s Lucha set got released. Unfortunately we don't have a lot of footage of him during his prime in the 80s but what we do have makes him look like an all time great rudo. RIP

Hello all, just looking for a bit of guidance in an area I am woefully inept at. In 1984, what would be considered the 'big' shows for each main territory? Some are self explanatory, but my lack of knowledge about wrestling markets and US geography doesn't help. WWF: MSG, Boston Garden Memphis: Mid-South Coliseum (though they run it every week IIRC) The groups I'm mainly looking for are (in addition to adding to the WWF list, as I'm sure there are more): Mid-South WCCW MACW GCW AWA I'm not sure if all of them can be broken down in the same way as WWF can, but thought I'd at least ask. Thanks for any and all help.

Hello there! You migh have encountered this concept on DVDVR, WKO, puroresu.tv if you remember that boar existing etc. So let's get into how this will work: -You nominate matches you think are really good. Then you vote yes or no depending how good you think the matches are. -How good do the matches need to be for you to nominate them or vote yes? Star ratings are irrelevant here, but I'll talk about them for a second anyway. Last year I had around 20 matches at four stars or higher. Maybe a few more, I'd have to think about it. Those are all matches I though were really great and could be argued for serious MOTYCs (and didn't even include a few consencus picks).…

TNA Impact is back tonight (Dec. 15, 2016) from Cameron, North Carolina and will be airing on Pop TV at 8 EST. Tonight is Total Nonstop Deletion, a 2-hour long Deletion event at the Hardy compound! Things we will see there: Eddie Edwards defending his title against Bobby Lashley, Tag Team Apocalypto (The Hardys defending their tag titles against anyone who shows up), King Maxel’s first TNA match, and Knockouts action! Is it wrong that I'm actually kind of excited for this? I've enjoyed the Broken Universe stuff so far. At best, it will be a video game come to life, at worst it will typical TNA. Here's the trailer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dT8kbbdllA

So far as a company they've done a great job at pissing off their fan base. 1. If you order the day of the show you get a 5 dollar increase in price. Hey Fuck off all you impulse buyers. 2. The VOD on demand won't be up till Sunday. I ordered Evolve 40 even though I was going to be at work for the 1st 1/2 of it. I thought that's fine I'll watch it Saturday morning. I also got KOTI night one. I watched everything but the last 2 matches because they put on such a bad show I fell asleep at that point in my chair. Again I'll have to wait till sometime Sunday to view the rest of it. Overall they've left a bad taste in my mouth. With all these extra eyeballs on the…

Hey , So lots of confusion is going around regarding what Strong Style is? I want to ask everybody , what is your interpretation of Strong Style Wrestling? How would you describe it as a wrestling fan? Is it possible for other promotions and other performers outside of new Japan to use that style or adapt it into the style they create for themselves? What is Strong Style and what does it mean for everybody? Have at it boys and please educate me! I'll be seeing you.

So, with all of my moving and stuff, I lost all of my old wrestling tapes. That means no more Osaka Pro when I'm having a bad day or early Toryumon when I'm eating ramen. So it goes. But, it made me realize that I never got to see ZIPANG tapes. All I even know about it is that one of my favorite wrestlers, Black Buffalo, wrestled as Rojo Del Sol and there was a guy with a watermelon for a head. Is there anywhere I can find some ZIPANG or even Osaka Pro to watch?

When the Macho Man was a boy with his younger brother Lanny, they traveled with their father to different territories including Hawaii. Randy was decent wrestler at the time but didn't have confidence in his promo ability. After watching one of his favorite wrestlers he figured out his famous tag-line! "Ooh Yeaaah!" Who was it that inspired one of the greatest entertainers of all-time? It was Pampero Firpo! Watch this clip on dailymotion: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x53pw95_pampero-firpo-promo_shortfilms

  12. I have been meaning to make this thread for quite some time, but for whatever reason failed to get around to it. However, Tanner recently tweeted about this same exact topic, looking for recommendations, which led directly to the creation of this thread. Most people on this board, I would think, have recommend something wrestling related to somebody else in the past, whether the other person was someone looking to get into wrestling, a lapsed fan, searching for something new, or completely ignorant to anything wrestling related. My approach has always been to sit (willing) people down and show them a crazy Ishii-Shibata style brawl if they are new and into martial ar…

From the Dave Meltzer Megathread: I agree with this statement and don't want it to be a side point. I think we can get some discussion going about the point. Now that the old "Indie" style (that I hated) has made its way to WWE, we have a hybrid style of the WWE style mixed with the Indie style. Meaning that we get matches with two guys hitting each other with everything, none of it means anything and the crowd doesn't buy any of it. Meanwhile they're taking seemingly more wear and tear on their bodies to get a lot less of a reaction. The entire "This is awesome!" mentality sucks. I don't need to see a Top Rope Snow Plow for a 2-count to think that a match is goo…

On JR's podcast, he stated, pretty emphatically, that a loss in a wrestling match has never killed a career (in reference to the Lesnar/Goldberg match last Sunday). Now, I don't think he thought back through the annals of wrestling history before he made that statement, but it DID make me rack my brain... Has any wrestlers career been "killed" by a major loss? I feel like arguments can be made for somebody, I just can't think of who right now. Conversely, there are an insane amount of guys who actually had their career MADE by a loss - Steve Austin at WM13, Mick Foley at KOTR 98, to a lesser degree Daniel Bryan when Sheamus squashed him and even Shane McMahon …

  15. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GN8WpBFNVzqM6pSOPbnp1tlOiBt0-qT0YtwnDppnq-Q/edit?usp=sharing I love Word of Sport. The only thing about trying to catch up with it is I end up watching matches in a pretty random order. So I put together this spreadsheet that puts the 284 World of Sport matches with dates on YouTube user tellumyort's channel in chronological order. That said, there are still 105 matches on the channel that don't list a date, which are listed at the bottom of the spreadsheet. If anyone could help fill in some of those blanks, that'd be great. All matches have corresponding hyperlinks. Also if there any World of Sport matches online th…

  16. This may wind up being the only post in this thread but my beloved "Comments that don't warrant a thread" is dead so we're left to do things like this. I was thinking about how much better the Giant Gonzalez Hasbro action figure was than the actual wrestler and was wondering if anyone else might fit this label. Personally I think the Giant Gonzalez figure was the best of the whole Hasbro line as he was actually made to be a little bit taller than the rest of the figures and his goofy muscles painted on bodysuit in action figure form actually just made him look incredibly jacked up. He was the king of monster heels in my Hasbro WWF world and had quite a few runs with t…

Please don't respond to this by answering "I like 1993 All Japan it's so great". That's for a different discussion. Surely there must be a thread for your favourite promotion/style/era or however we'd define that. Basically, if you were to build a style from the ground up in a way you think would most efficiently use everything that makes wrestling exciting and cut out everything that allows workers to enter black holes of cliches and stupidity. Just bringing up some ideas that haven't been used often or altogether is more than enough for starters. I'm not going to pull a Parv and turn this thread into a case for why shoot style is the best, instead just men…

The name may not mean much to people outside the Pittsburgh area, but for those of us who grew up here every generation knew Bill Cardille. In the 50s-60s, he was the host of the Studio Wrestling TV program that nearly everyone in town watched to follow hometown legend Bruno Sammartino. The generation after that knew him better as "Chilly Billy", the host of a show that aired schlocky horror movies with a cast of characters - kind of a tame version of Howard Stern's Wack Pack- like Terminal Stare, a zombie like silent woman who would stare menacingly into the camera while Bill talked about the upcoming movie. People of all ages knew him as the host of the local segments d…

  22. of course Sid Vicious was going to win the title from Vader before the scissors incident with Arn. But what was the original plan for Flair? Looking back at WCW TV they seemed to be building to a match with Austin. Was that the direction? Then who does Dustin work? I can't imagine Sid being champion for long. They could have given him a run until Hogan came in and built that up but just doesn't sound like the hardcore WCW fans would have backed that. Just strange to think Sid would have been the center of any promotion

  23. Pretty simple concept. You can define your own criteria (booking, angles, in-ring and matches, business, combination of everything etc.). I care primarily about in-ring work and matches so right now I am thinking 1997 for high quality stuff from several different promotions and styles all around the world. 1989 and 1996 are the other really strong contenders for me.

This has been a talking point for a while so have at it. Continuing from here : This was actually going to be my next point. Flair vs Garvin isn't much different than Wahoo vs Jimmy Valentine-not as good but has the same basic idea. The issue of authenticity doesn't really come up when wrestlers stick to basics but when they overreach and people argue whether they've come up with characters that are distinctive enough on their own as well as when they appropriate just because it looks cool, not considering the context of what made it as efficient as it was originally. If you look at how no-sells are used in Akiyama vs Kobashi 7/24/98 or Akiyama-Misawa 2/27/00 and…

So for this week's podcast, with Joe Vs. Balor in a cage on the horizon for Wednesday's NXT Takeover, we want to look at the history of the cage match, and are looking to ask - what is your favourite match to ever take place within a steel cage concept? This can be any match from any promotion, whichever one you draw to the most, and can be one of the traditional cage match's siblings, such as Hell In A Cell, War Games, Elimination Chamber, etc. And of course, the major question is why? Why does your personal favourite stand out amongst the rest? As always, the best contributions will be read on the air and you'll be credited accordingly. So what is it for you? EDIT…
