  1. I'm not talking about a guy making his legit debut, or at least who's been in obscure indies not in your area and thus you'd probably have no reason to know anything about him For me I'm talking about Ric Flair and WCW, but anyone can chime in with anyone they want. I grew up in MA without cable. Had no idea when WCW Worldwide was on (assuming it was) in my area. Never caught WCW at all. But in the summer of 91 I went to a WWF house show that had Bobby Heenan announced Ric Flair was coming to the WWF. Now having a reason to care I went to the video store. We had Betamax still and there was one WCW tape to choose from Starrcade 90. Now I already knew…

Okay, I've cracked because I've always wanted to know the answer to this, but who here actually got Smackdown when it aired from 2001 to 2008? Chattanooga didn't have a UPN or CW affiliate for years and we ended up getting it late Saturday evenings on the local Fox affiliate. However, that was an off and on trend for a few years including the show landing in different time slots. It stayed it's course from about early 06 until the transition to My Network TV though. This had to have happened to others right? If you didn't get SD when it aired, when did you? Did it change from time to time? I'm curious is all. It used to drive me insane that we didn't get Smackdown with fa…

http://www.scribd.com/doc/287131780/1998-Hulk-Hogan-contract-with-WCW Not sure if this has been discussed here before, but I randomly did a google search for Hogan's WCW contract, and a DVDVR thread came up having this link. It really is incredible. The deal Paulie had with that restaurant dude whom Joe Pesci punked in Goodfellas, where the the terms were crystallised by Henry Hill into "Fuck you, pay me", was probably not as lop-sided as this one. On one hand, it is nice to see a wrestler getting one over on management; usually, promoters fleece wrestlers to the very last of their abilities and then simply drop them as if they are garbage. But still, wow. No wonder…

This is inspired by the passage in Bret Hart's book where he talks about his experience with Flair. Supposedly, Flair liked the old style of calling the action in the ring, whereas Hart liked to have things planned out ahead of time. It then feeds into his match with Bulldog at Summer Slam which, if you listen to any of his lengthier shoots, Bret almost always brings up as "the only match where you see me calling spots" (or some such similar phrasing). In my mind, that logically raises two different questions (and a third one, indirectly): 1. Do you consider crafting and scripting a match before hand to be more, or less, impressive than calling it in the ri…

  7. Started by MoS,

If WWE and the MNW series are to be believed, DX single-handedly changed the course of wrestling, and destroyed WCW. While that is revisionism so blatantly misleading it would have been hilarious if it were not so sad and infuriating, DX was actually quite popular during Attitude. Going back, however, the only period of time where I actually liked DX was between January and March 1998, when they were feuding with Austin. It seems to me that even someone as fucked-up as Shawn had realised by then that Austin was hotter than volcanic lava and was going to be the next company ace no matter how much politicking he did, so he just decided to go with it and become a full-f…

This is something that's puzzled me a bit for years. The decisions to allocate wrestlers music, and when seems quite arbitary. Warrior had his tune by WM 4, yet DiBiase came out to silence until 1990 (I think). By 1991 it seems every featured star has a tune, but why was it so patchy until then?

  9. Apologies if this has been posted here previously, but I came across this video of Bob Mould talking wrestling on youtube. Its kind of a weird interview in that he seems to get a bit flinty half way through that they are asking him wrestling and not music based questions, but he seems to snap out of it and his thoughts on things are pretty interesting given his subsequent run in WCW creative. I have very little knowledge of any of what he was specifically involved with in terms of angles or talent in WCW but anyone who can fill me in please feel free. I always remember seeing that he was wearing an AWA t shirt in one of the photos used in Michael Azerad's book "Our Band …

  10. I know there are some, but it seems like it would be a short list. I don't mean amusing or entertaining promos so much as I mean really good angles and promos that would hold up to past eras where the booking tended to be better and not look out of place. I come up with: - Jim Cornette promos in the ROH vs CZW feud - Some of the stuff in the Jericho-Michaels feud - Nexus invades - The Rock returns, builds to match with John Cena - CM Punk gets a pipe bomb - Daniel Bryan's journey to Wrestlemania 30 - A few isolated things from Paul Heyman - Brock Lesnar All Access-like segment to build to Cena match at Extreme Rules 2012 - Some Larry Sweeney stuff What am …

growing up a wrestling fan, I used to tape matches off the tv. Except squash matches. I found them uninteresting. Although I would record competitive squash matches. Guys like Johnny Rich, Jimmy Powers & of course Iron Mike Sharpe. He's dead now, but he will live on thanks to the internet.

Can somebody give me details on all the times Lesnar has been sued for breach of contract. I remember it happening several times, with pretty much every one of his employers except the UFC.

  13. Does anyone have or know of somewhere I can find a list of Fujinami vs Choshu matches that are in chronological order? I'd like to go through the feud in order and so far I'm struggling to work out whether I'm missing out on any matches... I've watched what I think are there first three singles matches so far but that's what I've pieced together through various different lists (DVDVR best of 80's New Japan list, some old posts on wrestling classics, a few posts here etc)... Funnily enough, as my wrestling fandom has taken on a more obsessive air in recent months I've begun to crave watching things in order far more than I used to, especially when it comes to feuds.

  14. It has been well documented that Bill Watts told his wrestlers that they would get fired if they ever got their ass kicked in a bar fight or any other type of street fight, and that "I was drunk" was not a valid excuse. That being said, did he ever have to fire anyone because of that?

  15. Do you have any favourite oddities or rarities from WWF, WWE and WCW TV or house shows that you know from back in the day or that you have found killing time on youtube or at thehistoryofwwe.com? The well known (at least around here) Arn Anderson vs Tom Magee match from European TV would be a perfect example for this thread. Some rare stuff: - This is now on Dailymotion but Tenryu had a couple of matches that were shown on the European version of Superstars, one against a jobber called The White Shadow and other vs The Brooklyn Brawler. The latter would have been a fine SWS/WAR main event for a minor spot show in rural Japan. I still have those two matches in VHS…

Do we have any sense why Flair came out at #3 rather than #1? Instinct says its a simpler story to promote someone going the distance. So why 3?

  19. Hey Guys, I constructed a list of my 100 favorite matches of all time right now. It's a good mix. Remember I'm only 19 and only seen so much so give it a look and place your opinions here. 21. The ebook version of Kamala Speaks recently landed on the Kindle store, so I decided to treat myself to it as a Christmas present. After reading Backlund's book, I dived right into Kamala's. I am a huge Kamala fan from childhood, so I was really excited to finally be able to devour this. As a kid, I knew I couldn't ever be Hulk Hogan or Ultimate Warrior, but maybe I could be Kamala... (I don't mean growing up to become an African savage - kind of hard for a white kid to aspire to, haha - and I definitely don't mean becoming a bodyguard for Idi Amin. I mostly mean the belly. I could rub my belly with the best of them!) I knew I'd have fun with this, of course, but I was…

I thought I might release the FSM 50 list in the hope of generating some further discussion on Pro Wrestler of the Year. This list was chosen by contributors to Fighting Spirit Magazine. The criteria for the FSM 50 states: “Quality of matches in the period November 2014 to December 2015 was the main criteria in considering FSM's Top 50 Pro Wrestlers of the Year. Such bouts, however, were not merely judged on workrate or technical skill, but also performance on the biggest stage, ability to work the crowd, and quality of storylines.” The list was as follows: 1. AJ Styles 2. Kevin Owens 3. Kazuchika Okada 4. Hiroshi Tanahashi 5. John Cena 6. Sasha Bank…

  23. Bischoff contradicts himself a lot these days but one thing he says is that he didn't see Starrcade as his main PPV. I have heard Halloween Havoc and occasionally Bash at the Beach and Superbrawl as his choices. I figured I'd take a lot at 93-98 and determine what WAS the biggest show each year. Not so much my results but promoted matches and how it was booked going into it. Gonna use just those 4 big ones. 1993 Superbrawl - Under Watts, doesn't count. Beach Blast - Tag match with Sting/Bulldog vs. Sid and Vader was heavily promoted. A solid mid card as well but hardly booked as the must see show of the year. Halloween Havoc - Nope. Vader-Cactus…
