I've been reading Capitol Revolution since the New Year, and it has got me interested more in the pre-WWF era. I'm sure there are might be loads, and I look like an arse, but since there isn't often a lot of mention of legitimate 'must watch' matches from the pre-WWF era, I thought it might be worth asking here for any suggestions.

While watching an edition of TNT from 1984 last night, a match between B. Brain Blair and Paul Orndorff irked me a little bit. This morning, I'm not sure if the criticisms I leveled at the match are justified or not. I will paste in the little match review later in this post, but first of all I want to walk through what I consider to be classic US match structure with particular emphasis on what the babyface does in the match. Let's take a hypothetical 15-minute TV match. I'd break down the timings like this: 1. Shine sequence [about 3 minutes] This is where your babyface pops the crowd at the start of the match and gives showcases a glimpse of what he's a…

I figured since we have a neat pinned thread with all sorts of YouTube channels that have classic wrestling, it would be fun to have a thread where we can discuss what we find there. I've been watching 81-83 Mid South stuff here and it's been very entertaining so far. Some things stand out: Bill Watts loved him some "challenger turns because he lost out on a title match". First Paul Orndorff turned face on Bob Roop after Roop sabotaged his car causing him to miss a title shot, then Ted DiBiase turns heel after promising he'd leave the territory if he can't beat Bob Roop only for JYD to beat him for the belt before the match. Somehow Ted's stips still apply and he …

Hey guys I'm trying to catch up with years in wrestling when I wasn't watching and I know 2000/2001 WCW was overall awful but can anyone recommend any good matches from that time period?

Loss beat me to the Resolutions but I want to hear some predictions from the PWO crew. What's going to happen in 2016? Will TNA continue to survive? who will be fired? Will Daniel Bryan wrestle again? Who will breakout? Create your own predictions and lets see how well you can predict the future!

For those of you that missed the podcast of the year (reminder link to part 2, with this particular discussion, ), Chad mentioned what I thought was a terrific idea in recapping his & Parv's top 100 matches -- watching a personal favorite match every year on Christmas. This seemed like a great way to get back to an old favorite in the midst of the copious new material that most folks here go through on a regular basis. So in between the diner and basketball I'm determined to kick this tradition off for myself this year and think it'd be fun to hear what match everyone else would or will look back to with this in mind. Chad's match (if it hasn't changed) was …

Since there is no "Comments that don't warrant a thread" thread anymore.... I had actually never seen this before. I had heard a lot about it though. Rock was great in it, but my personal favourite was Big Show's 3 lines. That dude has a really good comic timing. Triple H.....well, he tried, like he always does. I know he likes to pretend that he could have easily been the Hollywood superstar that Rock is, but chose wrestling over movies, but he just doesn't have it. I would actually argue that Austin has a much better and more entertaining personality and comic timing, even though in his prime, he almost never cracked jokes on-screen. Anyway, since I did not…

Died today of complications due to brain surgery. Two days shy of his 42nd birthday. Can't believe he was only 19/20 when he started in ECW. Definitely had a unique look and one of the most recognizable names in early ECW RIP Shah

Are there any books that have some good detail on Professional Wrestling from 1900 - 1947 that go over some of the promotional wars, pacts, Trusts, etc.. as well as back stories on the men? I have a read a ton about the era, but always looking for more on it. The National Wrestling Alliance book by Tim Hornbaker really takes care of that NWA History, but I am concerned now with the early 1900s and Hackenschmidt / Gotch / Jenkins / etc.. One World Champion era into the era of the teens / twenties / thirites with a bunch of different champions (AWA / NWA / etc..) / the original NWA (National Wrestling Association) history / into the formation of the Alliance? Of pa…

Hello all I'm just looking for some guidance as to the initial break-up of Duggan and Dibiase in 1983 Mid-South. What caused it? I'm currently watching it chronologically, but also doing some writing on the Duggan/Dibiase feud - I don't really want to spoil everything, but need the additional information for the writing. Also, did they team back up in 1984 before they split up again? I've seen most of the angle before the feud in 1985, and this is what it seemed to suggest, but I might have misunderstood. Thanks for any and all help.

did anyone here enjoy this? how the fuck was this greenlit? why was he MIA on TV between WM9 and King of the ring? if he had met Bret at Summerslam what would the match have panned out like? and IF Hogan had put Hart over does it finally make Bret the MAN?

Loss suggested this topic in the Hogan Mania IX thread and it really struck me as something cool to discuss. I moved the year back to 1991 because I think that is the year when a lot of the themes that would dominate the period develop, eg. the steroid scandal comes to the public's attention, WCW business plunges, general interest in pro wrestling in greater pop culture waned noticeably during the year, etc. For me, I was a fan during this whole period, funny enough getting into wrestling again in late 91 after being mostly off it since mid 89. I have a lot of fond memories of this time that I'll get into at a later date. It truly was the most dire time for pro wrestling …

Anyone else getting this from Jim? I ordered mine today and he already shipped it. I should get it by Saturday at the latest as Jim only lives about 30-45 mins away from me. I'm excited about what footage is on the DVD.

Watch the end of Halloween Havoc 1996 again. Hogan leaves Savage laying. Bagpipes. "He doesn't even work here!" version 8.0. But then, when the promo starts, Hogan clearly feeds Piper a line; "we were neck and neck." Roddy says "not yet," and proceeds to do his "did they come to cheer you or boo me" routine. Hogan cuts him off and again feeds him the line, "we were neck and neck," and Roddy again goes off on his own. At this point it's clear Hogan is trying to get something in before the PPV goes off the air, whereas Piper is clearly going into business for himself, putting himself over rather than getting to the "me vs. you" part. …

No, this is not a spam topic. This was published a couple of weeks ago but I haven't seen it in here. That's today's exchange rate for 1 million pesos, which is the price of the entire Box y Lucha collection starting in 1963 (missing roughly the first 500 magazines). 2 beautifully bound old school looking books per year that would not look out of place on any classic book collection: http://boxylucha.com/coleccion-de-box-y-lucha-en-venta/ Box y Lucha has been struggling for a long time and this probably is a last minute resort to raise funds. I thought 1000000 pesos was the "Gringo price" but Mexicans I know have been quoted that same price... this is the …

It may seem external, but ring attire can make or break certain wrestlers (can you imagine Flair in his prime without the "RF" on the side of his tights?). However, what are some of the worst ring attires you can think of? This only applies to stuff worn while wrestling, stuff like Steamboat's dragon outfit doesnt count. Zack Ryder had a hideous pair of tights in WWECW where he had tights where one leg was long and the other was short. IRS was also a ridiculous outfit, he had some good matches while wearing the business suit, true (mainly as a member of Money Inc), but i could never take him seriously with it on (Mr Hughes OTOH, while not the best wrestler in the world, …

Opening tag. These Hardy Boyz rip-offs with their "super kick party" catch phrase have annoyed their way into X-Pac heat territory with me already. First ROH PPV I've ever seen. Taking a flyer and hoping to see some All Japan type stuff.
