Grimmas - Often I enjoy discussing wrestling more than watching it. Me - I'm not sure if that last one is a confession. It's hard to imagine being a fan at this level without being able to bounce ideas off others. Grimmas - Sorry, to clarify, enjoy discussing wrestling more than watching wrestling. Maybe that is common? Me - I understood ok, my point was that sometimes the discussion/analysis/reading posts here is more enjoyable than watching for me too. And it would be hard to get to his level of fandom if you were watching in a cave, completely isolated somewhere. Well? Whatcha think?

With the announced return of FMW I have been confronted once again by my lack of knowledge about anything in wrestling. I know practically nothing. Tell me about FMW? Not quite excited about the return since it seems the spirit has been living with Onita for awhile. What is memorable from that crazy, whacky promotion? Oh, and any other sleazy Japanese wrestling from that period to check out?

This came up on the latest Karl Stern audio over at the Observer site and he did a pretty poor job answering the question. So let's try it here. At what point were there the most territories in wrestling (including outlaws), and how many total operations are we talking about?

Didn't know where to ask this o I figured this topic would suffice. I'm big on proper labeling, it's an OCD thing I think. Either way, my question pertains to the TV show Main Event. I understand that it originally was called NWA Main Event. By 1990 was it still called that? I've seen it listed in some places as NWA orld Championship Wrestling Main Event and in others as WCW Main Event? So, in 1990, specifically for the famous Eaton/Flair match, what would the promotion be and the name of the show? I'm leaning towards it still being NWA as the promotion and Main Event as the name of the show, but I want to try and get this right. (Also, in the spirit of the new ways o…

Does anyone think that home video had a big part to play in the popularity of pro wrestling in the 80s? Not just the WWF videos, but other promotions as well. For the first time, it was easily possible to see wrestlers/promotions/storylines that fans may have just have heard about, as well as seeing the early years of certain wrestlers. Along with the rise of cable, this had a big impact on the expansion era IMO.

The 1st quarter of the year is closing . So I thought I'd share my thoughts on who's in my top 5 for most outstanding wrestler of the year 4far. 1. AJ Styles 2. Kota Ibushi 3.Timothy Thatcher 4. Brock Lesnar 5.ACH Styles is our touring champion going around and having strong matches everywhere. He's had good matches with Naito,Tanahashi, Ibushi. In ROH he's had strong matches with Bobby Fish, ACH, the 6 man with the Young Bucks, and his match with Mark Briscoe was still good. He had a good tour of Europe. I thought the John Morrison match was good as well. I'm still waiting on a MOTYC from him. Ibushi has the Nakamura match which should be considere…

Me and shoe are here live in San Antonio so I thought I would collect my thoughts here as the show is going on. Shane Diller ? vs. The Romantic Touch - Fun opener with a Rhett Titus under the hood playing a Handsome Stranger gimmick. Shane is a big fat dude and Touch worked well around Shane's limitations. Nothing special but the crowd was into it.

I'll keep updating this as I go, but this is stuff I've encountered as I've been researching for my e-book. A thread seemed like a good place to do a data dump. I'll do a post for each month. When I write about this, I'll provide a lot of context around these numbers, but I still think they are interesting without all of that. JANUARY 1990 WWF House Shows 01/05 (Des Moines, IA - Roberts vs DiBiase - 4,900) 01/06 (Utica, NY - Dusty vs Boss Man - 2,700) - Matinee & lots of no-shows due to travel problems 01/07 (Winnipeg - Roberts vs DiBiase - 2,500) 01/12 (Moline, IL - Warrior vs Bravo - 6,876) - Sellout 01/13 (Chicago - Hogan vs Perfect - 16,000) - Sel…

I was watching an episode of Wrestling With Wregret where the host was pointing out that there were never any "smart" (ie, highly intellectual) or "rich" (think million dollar man) characters given to faces. It made me wonder, are there any characterizations that are strictly for babyfaces or heels? Since the 90s we've seen characters that one would think would be a face get over as heels (ie, kurt angle: amateur champion), and we've seen heelish characters get over as faces (val venis comes to mind). Bear in mind, this isnt really about the crowd causing the character to become a face or heel, its more about how the character is initally portrayed (otherwise i would have…

Geothe once said, "Only in limitation does the master reveal himself". On a recent show we recorded, I became interested in the distinction in wrestling between limitation and minimalism. How does one make this distinction? What makes one wrestler "limited" and another "minimalist"? Are these not two sides of the same coin?

I've been back into a territories mood as of late due to Kris' podcast and watching Cornette's series with KC. I'm going to try and do a massive watching/rewatching venture and need a few pointers on stuff thats not already on one of the 80's territory sets. I'm talking classic matches, angles, promos and anything else memorable. Off the top of my head this would be stuff from Mid-Atlantic/Crockett,Portland,Georgia,Florida,Houston,Southwest,CCW,Central States,PR,the left out WWF stuff and probably a few others im forgetting. I have a few off hand already such as the "I'd like to talk to Tom" angle and the Hansen/Colon feud but after that i need a little help. There could e…

I enjoy tag-team matches on the same level as singles matches. Cutting my teeth on Shire and moving onto Crockett is why. I don't know the last time anyone as watched these three events but I thought I would ask anyway. I know the commercial shots don't allow you to hit the bulls-eye but I'm going with 1986 considering I was at the event. In 1987 you had the great Flair & Windham match that added to the overall event. Plus the return of Magnum TA. You also get the upstart Luger getting a big run outta the gate. It seems though that 1988 gets lost because of the shitty format and Koloff challenging Flair fell flat obviously due to Koloff. There were some solid matc…

This stems partially from Reigns I guess, but moreso because I've been watching Memphis from 82-83 and every time I've seen Bockwinkel come to town to face Lawler, there's these women in the front row booing the shit out of Lawler. I saw it in like three or four different matches even, it's crazy. I don't know, maybe these women are always in the front row of the MSC and I just never noticed them? Maybe they just love Bock and his very large vocabulary? So I'm thinking about odd/negative babyface reactions. There's a lot of examples with Hogan I think, and HBK in MSG vs Sid. I'm sure this has happened plenty of times over the years, but I can't think of too many examp…

Is there a more diverse use of styles and matches on a ppv than Spring Stampede 1994. I'm not really meaning loads of gimmicks and themes in a Russo sence but just a good variety that was also entertaining. At Stampede you have *Badd/DDP - standard undercard opener. *Regal/Pillman - hybrid styles match that worked. *Chicago Street Fight - nutcase arena wide brawl *Austin/Muta - mudcard title match, played out pretty even. *Sting/Rude - standard sports entertainment match with a little smoke and mirrors thrown in. *Rhodes/Buck - Classic southern brawl *Vader/Bossman - big lads smacking the fuck out of each other *Flair/Steamer - classic NWA style main event.

Yohei Komatsu vs Sho Tanaka These guys work each all the time. So they've developed a great chemistry. Some real crisp mat work to start. Digging Komatsu holding on to the headlock. Komatsu starts working the back. Loving Tanaka's running forearm. The story of the match is the Boston Crab. A really heated rope break. Tanaka showing so much fight. Now Komatsu cinches in a 1/2 crab for the win. A really strong opener. 3 1/4* Jushin ‘Thunder’ Liger & Tiger Mask & Jay White vs KUSHIDA & Alex Shelley & Ryusuke Taguchi On paper this looks like a potential show stealer. Liger and Kushida start out. The vet just putting the youngster through the paces …

Has there ever been a one or two day American pro wrestling tournament that was praised as being good among a clear majority of fans? The Crockett Cups come to mind. So does the first King of the Ring. But even those two shows had some major flaws and I'm not sure you could get a clear majority to agree that they were great shows.

This is an upcoming topic on the NHO Podcast but wanted to get some thoughts from others as well ... In 1993 and 1994 there were no Great American Bash pay-per-views, but what if there were? What cards would you put together for those shows that would fit within the time period of WCW? I'm really interested to see what everyone comes up with. Some of these will even be read on the podcast when it's recorded in a few weeks.

After the recent dust-up from the Main Event podcast this past week, do wins and losses matter to you? Should it matter if a guy eats pinfalls? I'd love to hear the explanations from you guys on why they do or don't matter. I was originally going to create a poll but thought that the answers wouldn't be as simple as yes or no.

Can somebody make a comprehensive list and times of the shows taking place this weekend? If you know the card, that would be a bonus. I want to prioritize the shows I choose to pay for and there is usually so much going on, I'll forget about half of them.
