This is a FASCINATING article! Credit to brawler2711 from Wrestling Classics for finding it and posting about it. http://whatculture.com/wwe/wwe-10-surprising-revelations-from-the-1991-summerslam-payroll-sheet.php There's too much to get into here, and I'd hate to spoil any of it. I'll just say, while some of the figures make sense, others seem incredibly arbitrary. Another WC poster, Matt Farmer, said the article was wrong about what "draw" meant. According to him, it wasn't a bonus at all - it was a cash advance from the overall paycheck in the days before ATMs. That changes some of the "facts" in the piece, but it's still a great read regardless.

I think the card looks like shit but it's Mania so I am going to watch. I tried putting in enough choices to cater to different tastes but I am sure I missed something.

All the stuff that Parv brought up in the Old School vs. New School thread had me thinking of subject matter that could get a wide variety of discussion going so this one come to mind. All of us on here have varying degrees of wrestling fandom some of us go back 40 years some go back maybe 5 years but everyone has that one promotion and that one point in time that they go back to and say this is how wrestling is supposed to be so I'm putting it out there to you folks as former ESPN anchor Bill Pidto would say "Whaddya Have" After some hard thinking I think mine would be the evolution of Mid-South Wrestling to Universal Wrestling Federation starting in December 19…

Maybe this has been discussed already, I've been gone for a while so it may have been, don't know. Either way, I was listening to the Roundtable discussion of the 100 matches you need to see on the Network. Charles (Loss) and Pete (Shoe) made a point when discussing Sami Zayn versus Cesaro from NXT that struck a chord with me. Their basic point, and please feel free to tell me if I'm getting this wrong, was that Zayn/Cesaro didn't really seem like a WWE or NXT match. This was used as a negative about the match. This point, and the larger discussion, got me to thinking about whether or not it should matter that a match fits within the general wrestling style of a promo…

I've been working my way through the major and suggested minor All Japan matches from 90 on and it's been really fascinating stuff. Watching Misawa & co. develop as workers over the last two and a half years (I'm in June of 92) has been really eye opening. One thing I'm noticing is that starting from 10/19/90 Misawa and his young cohorts seem to have a new confidence in themselves and their roles and everything builds up from there. And by mid 92 that confidence is manifesting itself in them approaching matches in different ways using the same things they have been using with a few additions here and there. I think that it's a lost time period for All Japan outsid…

On 2/27/15 NJPW World had it's Road to the cup houseshow. It was a solid show. Nothing bad, but nothing great either. The opener of Fastlane had more storytelling than pretty much everything on this show. 1.Sho Tanaka vs. Yohei Komatsu I liked this. They've worked each other a ton. One thing I'll say these guys have worked each other a lot, but it doesn't have that cooperative feel to it. I really liked that build to the finish. 3* 2.Kushida & Manabu Nakanishi vs. Gedo & Jado Man this was my favorite match of the night. It wasn't the best, but my favorite. The schtick that Gedo and Jado do in this was great. In fact Gedo on these houseshows has bee…

During the last few months I have watched every Prime Time currently available in the WWE network (except for the last one) as well as some older ones that I have found in other places. Let me preface by saying that this is a program that I was not familiar with: I only watched Prime Time starting in 1991 (when it was a very different program) and getting WWF 1986 TV set never was a priority when I was heavily into DVD trading a decade ago. This show is not at all like I would expect a Vince McMahon show to be, especially the wrestling part. Many name vs name matches featuring tons of Moondogs but also Siva Afi, Lanny Poffo, SD Jones and other lower stars. Tons of Har…

I think mine is Alice Radley from Jim Cornette's podcast. She might just be the most unwelcome presence on any form of media I've ever come into contact with, like worse than Scrappy Doo or fucking Batmite, or Jar Jar Binks. I genuinely hate her and resent her presence. This has nothing to do with the fact that she's a woman, and everything to do with the fact that she's fucking clueless and has no right calling herself a wrestling fan, let alone co-hosting a show with Cornette. I have NO idea how he can tolerate her. All-in-all, I can't think of anyone associated with wrestling that I dislike more than this woman. At least Strongbow drew some money and got some heat.…

Inspired by the IC title, and rewachting RAWs from 96, I thought we could ask ourselves the same question about the tag titles, which were a big deal until the early 90's. In 96, The Godwinns were fighting the Body Donnas on free PPV pre-shows. I know some will talk about how the Hardys, E&C and the Dudleys gave credibility back to the division, but to me the ship had sailed as early as 1994, probably when they switched the titles to babyfaces Head Shrinkers (never figured why) then to Micheals & Diesel who never defended the titles and then didn't do a job to lose them (how surprising). When they did the teag team tournament in 95, it didn't felt that important a…

Let's review: - CM Punk, who became Joe's best friend as their careers intertwined, chooses WWE over TNA, is over and selling merchandise from the start, and eventually ends up as a made guy and the best heel in the company in who knows how many years. Who made the company want him enough to shell out for a tour bus and Cult of Personality. - Bryan Danielson is still the best wrestler in the world, getting to have 20 minute matches on Raw that are put over on commentary and in the curated tweets as 5* classics, is currently the best character in WWE, sells a ton of T-shirts, is at worst the second most over WWE babyface with live crowds, and about to get an eve…

It's universally accepted that the IC title is not what it once was and the reasons are clear as to why. But when did it fall off a cliff for you? I was having a debate with a friend recently and he suggested as early as 1999 citing the Godfather as champion. I disagreed calling that reign a blip on the radar - not dissimilar to other blips on the radar at times when fans generally considered "Golden Ages" of the belt (Mountie in 1992 and Dean Douglas in 1995 for transition purposes). 1999 to me was good for the IC title when D Lo Brown and Jeff Jarrett were having spirited scraps for the belt and it felt like it meant something, and that both men could climb the ros…

What are the holy grail (I'd love to have a copy of that) entrance themes. I would especially like to get a hold of the NEW midnight express theme, Jarretts awesome NWA 1998 tune and Bigelows sax riff from his first WWF run.

After being on Liste'em and Learn with Matt Foy doing the top ten ECW matches I have been asked back on to do a best of the indies of the 2000's. I watched a lot of this stuff, but I want to make sure I don't miss anything. Outside of the stuff voted for in the WON Awards what should I be checking out? I have seen some cool stuff that may make my list that wasn't voted upon there, so I assume there is a lot out there. What is your favourite matches in that criteria?

(This is my first non-introductory post, so if this is in the wrong place, please let me know - still trying to figure out the structure of the board.) I never watched ECW when it was originally on, due to a combination of being too young for the product during some of its run and due to living in MN pre-Internet file sharing (or me knowing about tape trading, I guess), making it harder to obtain. I've been trying to catch up on it via the WWE Network, and I'm enjoying a fair amount of the product, but the royalty-free music is really throwing me off at times. Is it worth my while to try and track down the original versions with the licensed music, or am I overestimat…

You know, things that actually got fairly over, and even necessitated an actual push, despite been given (mostly) to guys creative had nothing for with no intention of them going anywhere? I've included a poll of stuff from the top of my head, feel free to list and discuss others.

I've been watching a lot of Lucha lately for the GWE project and it's amazing how fucking atrocious the commentary is for at least 90% of matches I've seen (80's project and yearbook stuff, mostly). I can't seem to really enjoy most of the matches even though I appreciate the work that is being done and I can see how great the wrestlers are. The more I watch, the more it feels like a chore to sit through the same boring and unfocused play by play Luchas has, it kinda makes me want to not know Spanish when watching it. Although I've never seen a Lucha match called with the excitement good puro matches normally have. I wonder if knowing Japanese would affect my enjoymen…
