  1. So the Undertaker's Wrestlemania streak is over. Now what should they do with him? Taker looked really old and beaten down last night. I understand he suffered a concussion during the match, so that could've been part of it, but he looked REALLY bad. The whole match I kept telling myself, "It's wrestling. When Taker ends up getting the pin over this legit monster/NCAA champion/MMA champion, just keep telling yourself, 'It's wrestling' and go with it." Then Brock pinned him and a bad match turned into a legit Holy shit! moment. WWE tried like hell to force a standing ovation from the audience, but people weren't buying it. Also, Undertaker seemed like a drunk o…

I was on Jason Mann's Wrestlespective podcast tonight which will be posted within the next few days. Anyway, we got into a brief conversation about nearfalls and how they have changed over the years. To me, a great nearfall is less about kicking out of something no one ever kicks out of and more about timing the kickout at the best possible millisecond to get the largest reaction. The days of a two-count being so close that half the people in the building swear it was a three count are not something I would say is over, but it doesn't happen very often anymore. I've decided that I think "2.9 Wrestling" is a misnomer -- a negative term used to describe wrestlers kickin…

One massive drawback in the demise of WCW was it severely restricted the potential for future dream matches. My classification of dream matches is two comparably highly regarded workers, or massive draws, having moved up the ranks in separate areas and coming together for the first time in a, well, Clash of the Titans. The last such matches I can think of were Angle/Michaels in 05 and Angle/Joe in 06. I'm not saying I haven't been excited or inspired by a match since, but it's virtually impossible to get two wrestlers up to that level without some interaction before they're both big big names. Within my criteria, what's everyone else's last true dream match?

  6. I only know of the website solie wrestling that has a month by month collection of wwf/nwa/wcw rosters. I don't know if it's accurate but it is the only one I know of. I am interested in finding rosters for pre 87/post 97 wwf/nwa and 80s rosters for the old territories like awa,mid south etc. Any help would be great. Thanks.

So I recently ran the gauntlet of early match matwork and how it comes across (to me) in my viewings. First off, I understand that the catch-as-catch-can stuff came from a different era where it didn't matter so much what you were working, but that you were wearing the opponent down in general so that you could apply the finishing move you wanted. And I actually enjoy that kind of wrestling. But I think that if you're wrestling within the timeframe where working a bodypart because it's injured or it figures into your plans is the norm, you should probably do that. With that in mind, I will get to my point. I really dug Hase vs. Kawada 5/2/99 for the way Hase al…

I posted this in the Kane/Bryan thread and thought it deserved it's own topic: In all fairness, is Sting at the same level as a guy like Booker T? Meaning it's cool when he shows up, but it's not going to be treated as a major deal? Booker had a WWE run where he was pretty over in the public eye for close to a decade. The last time Sting was higher than that level with the general public was what, 1998? His last two years in WCW he was just another guy on the roster. And spending a decade in TNA pretty much means he's spent the last decade in obscurity. Would people be petitioning for a Booker T/Undertaker WrestleMania match at this stage? No, nobody would. A…

  9. My question is simple just how well does everyone think that american pro wrestling/lucha measures up to puroresu on a match quality basis? It's pretty much widely accepted that 90's puro easily outclasses it's American/lucha counterparts (or does it?) so I was just wondering if people felt that this was also the case with the following decade and the current wrestling scene? Are there any American/lucha matches that people hold in the same high regard as the top puroresu matches or perhaps in some cases even better? I know plenty of people that think the best Ring of Honor matches do but then ROH was probably the nearest America has gotten to wrestling a similar style…

I've been going through all the PPVs on the Network in chronological order and among many thing that have piqued my interest is the varying rules that referees enforce, some of which are very odd. For instance in SuperBrawl VI Savage has Flair in a Figure-Four, and Flair gets to the ropes. It's a no DQ cage match though, so as the announcers explain Savage doesn't have to break. For some reason the referee comes over and kicks Flair's hands off the ropes. It's a puzzling moment, because if it is a No DQ match, then what does it matter if Flair is grabbing the ropes, why kick his hand away? Another is around 1993-1994 in WCW I noticed refs admonishing guys on just abou…

As I've learned a little more about calling spots in the ring lately, I've gotten curious about how a match between two wrestlers without a common language works on a technical level. Anybody have any insight here? Without the ability to call a high spot to your opponent, are such matches always partially pre-planned, or are there some tricks of the trade to convey more involved information to your opponent?

It occurred to me recently that I really don't like splinter promotions. Maybe I'm a bit conservative in the sense that I prefer more established, traditional promotions over new start ups, but I really can't stand promotions like UWF-i, AAA and All-Star Wrestling, both stylistically and in terms of what they did with the talent they took. Of course there exceptions. RINGS eventually became something great, PWFG and BattlARTS produced their share of good matches, and UWF was an offshoot to begin with. I also liked JWP after the split. UWA I'm not sure about. It may have been great or it may have been the 1970s AAA for me. Does anybody have a favourite or best spli…

WOW... You can dress a pig but its still a pig... Kane ISNT scary anymore...he can beat up Bryan all he wants...we all know he aint winning and this is once a year "thanks for being a team player" title shot and mini-push.. Sad this is what they give Daniel after Mania...kills his steam. Kane in a mask? Really? Come on....WWE you are better than that... THis blows.. Cole can sell this all he wants and they can make it as "savage" and call him a "demon"...its fuckin Kane...old ass retread Kane.

  16. I wanted to make this favorite brawls ever but that can be pretty vague so i went the southern route. For me there's nothing I love more than seeing Terry Funk or Jerry Lawler go punch for punch with a motherfucker from the trailer park. I also love the southern stereotypical stuff like chains in the trunks and throwing powder in the eyes. Some of my favorite matches are the Funk/Lawler series, The Dustin Rhodes/Stud Stable stuff and the Lawler/Moondogs stuff. What are some other favorites or best of all time? Doesn't necessarily have to be contested I'm the south either example being Rich/Funk from ECW

  18. I know this must have been answered at some point earlier so forgive me. My first question is about the length of wwf ppvs up until 1992. Wrestlemania 2/3 were 3hrs each plus longer intermissions. I believe intermission was between 15-30 minutes for these shows. That means they would need to secure 4hrs of ppv time. WM 4-7 ran about 3hrs 45 minutes with shorter intermissions so they would have had to secure 4 hrs 30 minutes with the pre show. They also ran long at Royal Rumble 91 with a ppv length of about 3hrs 20 minutes which meand another 4hrs of ppv time. In 1992 all ppvs were under 3hrs and it would stay that way until they expanded wrestlemania at wm16. My ques…

So I was reading JDW's awesome AJPW & NJPW ballots from the original DVDR best of 90's forum found here: http://web.archive.org/web/20050406061328/http://www.deathvalleydriver.com/Bestof90s/bestof90s.html These posts got me thinking along with this forum in particular that it's nice to find a group of people that seem so passionate about wrestling and infact seem to be providing the IWC with a sort of revisionist forum. What I mean is we're all so used to seeing the same cookie cutter opinions and lists on other sites that you almost know what someones going to post about a certain match before they've even written it, but that really doesn't seem to be the case…

Quote from Tigerpride... So what's a match that you think is boring, knew it was boring, and sat through it again anyway? For me, maybe HHH-Steiner from the 2003 Rumble. Just to confirm how bad it was.

I thought JVK had started a topic regarding this, but I could not find it in search. I've been thinking about my wrestling watching schedule as a child and I wanted to get some help to see if I had my timeline right. All I've started working on is WCW, but if anyone can add accurate WWE that would be great. If we can get a comprehensive a/k/a enough to satisfy us completists on the board maybe we can sticky the topic. So working off WCW, and starting arbitrarily at 1985 and ending in 1994 (year before Nitro) -- (feel free to expand) here is what I have. Please add/delete corrections as needed. 1985 - 1987 WorldWide - Saturday Morning Saturday Night - Saturda…

It's definitely helped a fair few wrestlers and others associated with the business. It's been a good intervention for some who've needed it also. However, it's simply a joke when it comes to deterring PED and AAS usage. The respective sizes of Triple H, Brock Lesnar, and John Cena, to name a few, stand out. Thoughts?

  25. Started by BillThompson,

Got this idea from the Matches you must love, but don't topic. Basically, we all have matches we love that others don't seem to care much for. What are some of yours? I'll start things off with Lord Steven Regal versus Ricky Steamboat from WCW Fall Brawl '93. It's not a famous match or anything, but I thought it was a really great match. Yet, the overwhelming majority I read about it pins it as disappointing, or at the very best merely good. It has its fans, but we seem to be very few.
