I'm a big fan of Inter Species Wrestling. For those who don't know it's a comedy promotion based in Canada. They also run some shows in Connecticut. Here's some of the matches I've enjoyed especially: http://johnsontranscript.com/2013/02/07/a-...ire-rope-match/ Their take on a barbwire match. Hands down my favorite match the promotion has put on. A "Lego Death Match" where the guys treat the Lego like thumbtacks http://johnsontranscript.com/2013/06/11/la...mageddocalypse/ The latest title change the company has had. Twiggy was champ for a long while before this. I haven't been able to attend a live show by them yet, but since Connecticut isn't that f…

  3. This discussion was in another thread and something I think we can expand upon. Inherently, my instinct tells me no. He could have had a few hot angles to start out with, but eventually they would have moved on and repackaged him like they did virtually everyone else they got from the purchase.

In this month's edition, FSM has feature-length articles on: - Former WWE champion Sheamus, and how his career has stalled during his recent babyface run. - FSM speaks in-depth with WWE talent scout Gerald Brisco about the new Performance Centre, and what it means for the future of the company. - In 1993, the WWF began an inter-promotional feud with the USWA. FSM recalls how the period influenced The Attitude Era. - FSM sits down with Cody Rhodes to discuss his famous wrestling family, working under Triple-H, and his hopes for the future. - FSM catches up with the folks at Ohio Valley Wrestling, and g…

Might as well tackle this too. What are your favorite matches to air on this ultimate WWE B-show? Keep in mind that they ran most of the matches so many times that mentioning it without a date doesn't help much, unfortunately.

If Hogan told someone that he struggled early in his wrestling career and considered going back to working on the docks or something—that would be an enormous lie right? From what I can tell he was wrestling Andre his first year and competing with Jack Brisco and Harley his second. He was a star from the very beginning right? Anyone have a good idea how often, if ever, he lost by pinfall in those days? It seems like "never" is the answer. It's hard to imagine someone more carefully protected and pushed throughout his career. Tell me why I'm wrong, if I am. Please? Trying very hard not to be worked by the workers.

This sort of "if not X who?" thing is not always my cup of tea, but this came up at Classics sometime back and I do think it's an interesting question. I think in general most people here accept the fact that Hogan was the guy who was going to drive national expansion. There was no one else at the time who could have done it, at least not to the degree he did. But Backlund is a different story. The purpose of this thread is not to shit on Backlund. I have really grown to appreciate Backlund more over the years and it annoys me that so many people still seem to cringe at the thought of giving him any credit as a worker, draw or star. Still Backlund is a g…

  9. Started by NintendoLogic,

So I was thinking, as I often do, about people's tastes and how they come to acquire them. It occurred to me that regardless of what one likes, there are certain matches that pretty much anyone who discusses wrestling on the Internet is exposed to at some point. I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of matches that have reached the Citizen Kane/Godfather tier where having seen them is a de facto requirement to be regarded as a serious fan. To make this list, a match has to have both popularity and (consensus) greatness. Various Fujiwara matches would fail on the former front, while something like Hogan/Andre would fail on the latter front. After a bit of bra…

  10. For the podcast we are planning to do an end-of-decade awards special to go through matches we've liked, rank workers, and so on. However, we have only been watching supercards, tv specials and Clash shows, and Crockett is a territory with a wealth of matches that took place on TV. Once we are the other side of Starrcade 89, and before Clash 10, we want to do a special show in which we look at about 20 notable matches that took place on TV in the period from 1983 to 1989. This is the last chance for assessments of certain guys to change before we finalise the awards. Help us come up with a list of stuff to watch. I've an idea I want to see more Slaughter in Crockett…

Hey yo everybody, I know we have some guys in the Boston Metro area, I don't know if anybody else is attending, but I won tickets through the local classic rock station for knowing that Hogan's name in Rocky III was Thunderlips. Talk about a meatball. I am a big enough AJ Styles fan that I am going with my brother. Unfortunately, due to a lot of stuff this week was not able to watch as much AJ as I wanted. I did watch about 5 weeks of Impact to get a feel of what I was to expect. I feel like the in-ring quality has really taken a nose dive and is nowhere near as good as the WWE anymore. Aries and Styles are the only guys working at a truly high level. Friggin Samoa Joe is…

WWE Live at Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, PA (June 1, 2013) 1. Randy Orton & Team Hell No beat The Shield by DQ when Roman Reigns used a steel chair on Orton as he attempted an RKO on Dean Ambrose. 2. Sin Cara pinned Cody Rhodes after hitting a Senton bomb from the top rope. 3. The Great Khali beat Damien Sandow with a brain chop. 4. No DQ Match/ Alberto Del Rio beat Big E Langston with a superkick. 5. Divas Championship/ Kaitlyn pinned AJ Lee with a reverse roll up. 6. Alex Riley beat Curt Hawkins with an A-Bomb. The Shield attacked both men afterwards. 7. Justin Gabriel beat Heath Slater with a lionsault.

  13. Was talking about this with Loss the other day and looking through the archives I don't think this has ever been explored in a thread. Of course to some degree this is subjective/opinion and then there are always strange quirks like Ice Train being hugely over in my hometown for unexplained reasons. But really what I am looking for here is people who were consistently more popular than their push would indicate. In general I think this is kind of murky territory because there are guys like Rey who I think were theoretically over enough to be "A" level stars but were still used in a way that was of massive value to the company he was in, so I could sort of see an argume…

Héctor Solano Segura was born on June 12th, 1969 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon into local wrestling royalty as his father Humberto Garza was already one of the biggest stars of the area and like most sons of luchadores when he was young his dream was to become a star like his father. His brother Mario who debuted two years after Héctor was born was also a big role model in his life because Mario was able to relate to Héctor differently than his dad and was the one that taught Héctor and his brother Humberto who was 3 years older than Héctor how to wrestle when they were kids. Mario would become a star like his father in Monterrey in the 80's as El Ninja while his younger br…

I feel like this topic has already been done somewhere but a couple of recent threads have inspired me to make this topic. In the "Acknowledging the Past" thread, it was brought up the Von Erichs could have had a decent run in the WWF. This brings me to dream match up #1... Kevin & Kerry Von Erich vs. British Bulldogs. - I think this would be a match-up that would be more spectacle than good match. I can imagine Dynamite and Kevin stiffing the hell out of each other. Kerry and Davey out juicing each other. Depending on what side of the bed the guys woke up on, it could be a good match too. After watching some AWA discs, my two favorite one-off teams h…

Post your thoughts here during the show. Chris Jericho vs. Fandango Kofi Kingston vs. Dean Ambrose Team Hell NO vs. Reigns & Rollins (Tornado Tag) Sheamus vs. Mark Henry (Strap Match) Randy Orton vs. Big Show (Extreme Rules Match) Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger (I Quit) HHH vs. Brock Lesnar (Cage Match) John Cena vs. Ryback (Last Man Standing)

  18. Just something I was pondering randomly. If Furnas and Lafon jumped to the WWF straight from All Japan in late '95 or early '96 would they have gotten over any better? I tend to think so based on the fact that there would have been some better teams to work with. The Body Donnas and New Rockers would probably have had good matches with them, especially with Candido, Prichard, and Snow all knowing Doug from SMW. And even bigger teams like the Godwins and Smoking Gunns would probably have been willing to bump for them, knowin that Doug was strong enough to pretty much put them where he wanted to. Another thing I was thinking about, would they have gotten over better i…

  21. Started by JerryvonKramer,

This thought flickered across my mind earlier and I thought I'd share it. Back in the 1980s, wrestling was presented in a kind of perpetually present bubble. There were some unwritten rules: - whatever happened yesterday is yesterday's news, now -- today -- is the greatest day in the history of our sport - guys who were working elsewhere were not acknowledged, they basically never existed. - the past was only ever brought up as a shill for the present and the needs of the present. So for example, if someone was going over Tito Santana in 1992, the fact he used to be IC champ would be brought up to add to his cred. - if figures from the past were brought ba…

The Hansen/Colon bullrope match got me thinking about matches that are awesome despite featuring a gimmick that tends to inhibit match quality. Other than the aforementioned, the best example I can think of is the Texas death match between Terry Gordy and Killer Khan? What others?

  23. Started by Dylan Waco,

I'm cross posting this from the WC thread in the other forum because frankly it deserves its own thread. Episode 25 of The Wrestling Culture Podcast is up and it is probably the most important podcast we have ever done. My friend John Philapavage and his life long friend Kevin Kiernan have been working on a documentary on ECW for 12 years (yes this means interviews that go back to the very tale end of the companies existence and pre-date Forever Hardcore and Rise and Fall by years). After multiple ups and downs along the way the project is nearing completion but they need our help. I know what you are thinking - ANOTHER ECW documentary? But everything I know…

  24. We touched on this in last night's show, but I wanted to go more in-depth on it here. In the 1980s, it seems to me that most big shows -- at least those put on by the WWF -- were booked with a "peaks and troughs" mentality. You build to peaks and take the crowd up, then you give them a break, a chance to buy a drink, and bring them back down with a nothing filler match before taking them back up again. In the late 1990s, Russo and co changed this general philosophy as the booking of live events became seconded to "writing for TV" and we got the philosophy of crash television filtering through to PPVs. This idea that there's always something unexpected around the c…

  25. Started by Loss,

In terms of fan interest, this is the low point in the history of the company, but I find it interesting how willing they were to try new things during this time. It struck me watching the 1993 yearbook how much they were embracing Memphis-style booking, and it's already standing out to me going through 1995 how much of a 70s-style presentation they were going for with Diesel on top. Sit down interviews going out of their way to portray the wrestlers as athletes, an understated Vince McMahon selling 70s-style football vs pro wrestler angles, focusing on "real" themes like Diesel's history of knee surgeries (even shockingly mentioning that his real name is Kevin Nash and t…
