I was praying that this was going to be a ironed out shoot-style-ish match given the occasion and mix of talent, even just a couple of minutes of them pretending that was going to be the case at least. That hope is dashed in the first minute as after a fairly decent strike exchange, Saito and Shark start doing headlocks and Irish Whips sigh. I mean Shark's cool and all don't get me wrong, I'm just not interested in seeing what is essentially a slower Tiger Mask tribute act go at it. We do get some Aoyagi/First Tiger stuff and it's actually pretty good for two guys with a combined age of 110 or something. Aoyagi starts off with a fairly gentle low kick, Sayama respon…

Was wondering if there was any follow up to their angle in the Porky/Escorpion match, and, well, this was six minutes of good workrate with some good character work mixed in, but not exactly something I will swoon over. The opening sequence was great, perfect one-upping with them countering every hold and move the other one did. I think in a vacuum it may not be that much different than New Japan finishing stretches, except here it follow a certain tradition of luca libre holds and moves that they opt to use whilst Okada matches use a bunch of US indy moves. I also vastly prefer when sequences like that are done at the beginning of a match instead of finishing with them. …

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Tomohiro Ishii - NJPW 11/9/13 There is something very reassuring about Tanahashi matches. So many wrestling fans now will declare "this is wrestling" during these athletic exhibitions when I just feel the moves is all that matters. The wrestlers are invested in the moves and the fans are invested in the moves. The investment more often than not is not about the victory. There is something just so traditional about Tanahashi that I just love. I don't think he knocks it out of the park everytime, but what he gives is a match that is pro wrestling. To me, Tanahashi matches are how I view pro wrestling. It is about build, about consequence and ultimat…

Sonoko Kato was a GAEA trainee who's had her fair share of solid matches; more of a shooty kind of wrestler than anything flashy, injuries dragging down her potential sadly long before she could've done anything substantial bar winning tag gold with a young Meiko (good company there.) She got her incredible second wind in OZ and wrestles to this day if you can believe it. Anyway, this was really good: Amano at this point had mastered the art of the sub-15 TV match and knew how to get a lot of quality out of relatively small portions of time. The starting sequences were established around cool basic grappling and Amano aping random Osamu Nishimura spots for the fun of it. …

Well this was quite something. Let's get to the negatives first - most of the offense that Da Mack & Dieter Jr. hit doesn't look very good & the match drags a bit by the end. The positives though, are far bigger than the negatives; the emotion in the match is perfect & Jr. rocks the color in amazing fashion as he bleeds A LOT throughout the thing. Walter & Dreissker are absolutely amazing in it too, just bulldozing through Hot & Spicy w/ their monstrous offense - ADJ's FIP segment was unbelievably great. Like I mentioned, he rocks the color fantastically & he takes such a terrific beating from the big lads. Amazing stuff. ****1/4
