January 1998

  1. Mortis busts out a couple of crazy moves (because it's anytime) in a glorified squash. Juventud gets a few chances to shine: executing a partial tilt-a-whirl into a sleeper that Dusty Rhodes delightfully calls a “whirlybird”. This match occurs in a vacuum from a booking perspective. Even though he’s in glorified enhancement talent mode here, Juventud won the Cruiserweight Title for the first time less than a week later on Thunder, later embarking on a feud with Chris Jericho that costs him his mask. Meanwhile, Mortis abandons the gimmick altogether by February, allying with Raven. Check out my full review of the match, as part of the 365 Wrestling project.

  2. This was going shockingly well in the first half. I'm as sceptical against these two guys as you can get, but they did a nice job building a traditional title match. Nothing mindblowing but really solid executed slow mat based type work mostly built around arm attack vs. Leg attack stuff. Then as I was ready to declare this a miracle match Muto grinds the whole thing with a bunch of long figure spots that go nowhere. The crowd is amped though and they proceed to take it home in fine fashion. Should say that Sasaki looked good, even doing a decent job selling his leg, also his judo throw is one of the best moves.

  6. Really good match which leaves you with a few realisations: 1. these two kids were insanely talented to have a random indy sleaze undercard match this good 2. damn, that's actually Fugofugo Yumeji and some dork from Dragon Gate before he went to Dragon Gate? 3. These two totally could have and should have been the Yuki Ishikawa and Daisuke Ikeda of sleazy King's Road style, but it just ended up not happening. AAAAAHHHHH it's maddening!! All that squandered potential!!! It's even worse than watching the kids in GAEA!! But, atleast I can watch this match and fantasy book an ideal fed centered around these guy propagating their own vision of brutal & intricate junior wr…

  7. Really fun little match with everyone hitting the mat. It's always fun to see Fishman with his working boots on and Atlantis having something to work with. The Panther/Lizmark sections were especially wonderful and it's pure crazy that these two never had a singles match. Nifty finish. It's hard to think CMLL didn't have the best TV in 1998.
