January 1998

  1. Super fun M-Pro signature tag with the addition of Super Boy who is an awesome tubby luchadore. Pretty long face shine segment to open the match with Gran Hamada looking super spry. Kai En Ta + SB did an expert job taking their opponents apart with great looking double teams. Togo always looks especially great lacing dudes up with punches and chops in between working exchanges. He also hit a really great La Parka style twist senton. Super Boy was easily the 2nd best guy on the rudo team, squishing dudes with fat sentons and an awesome moonsault. Of course it's a 1998 Sasuke match so he gets his leg torn up again. Finish was pretty unique and great. It really looked like i…

  2. Stiff match with plenty of neat moments. Unfortunately the structure was kind of a mess. Kato was wearing a bandage from her match against LCO and got bloodied again, but simply refused to be face in peril and no-sold through the attacks against her. Ozaki & Sato looked good when they got to work the cut and Satomura and Sato have really nice chemistry together. The nearfall section was good when it was Satomura and Kato trying their darndest to pin that witch Ozaki but I thought it went too long. Ozaki is hit or miss but she looked got kicking a bloody Kato in the face here and she threw a rotten backfist at one point. I'm all for experimentation in wrestling but thi…

  5. This was alright, though more like your red hot New Japan juniors fare than what you'd typically associate with Battlarts. Still, red hot is red hot and it had excellent heat. You'd think they'd hit a point of diminishing returns with the nearfalls considering literally every pin attempt from word one was a 2.999 count, but the crowd didn't seem to peak early. Tajiri was rolling out all sorts of lucha submissions like a nippy little Blue Panther and you're reminded that he worked Mexico for a minute there. I don't love Tanaka, but he's crisp and his stuff looks good so...that's a thing, I guess.

  6. Only 4 minutes, but what a great 4 minute match. Volk Han is an undeniable wrestling god, even when he is not on the offense his movements are poetry. I also always get a kick out of Maeda hitting the mat with anyone who's not Takada. I really liked how Volk sold his demise, you'd think how can you sell your demise well in a fluke match, but him howling when Maeda breaks his grip and grabs the kneebar is how you do it.

  7. Baba's 60th birthday. This is all about Old Man Baba Does All Kinds of Improbable Things. Including: blocking chops with his matchstick arms! Technical wrestling! Test of strengths with Kobashi! The crowd is hot for all things involving Baba, while the rest of the match was somewhat dry. I guess there's no reason to bring the workrate when you are there to make your geriatric boss look good. Mossman got smacked and stretched good, and Misawa did almost KO Kawada with an elbow, but nothing ever amounted to much. There was also plenty of „take punishment, then no sell back to offense“. Fuchi hits the Greatest Fistdrop at one point, but it's all lost in a stream of things ha…

  8. This was another gem from the lucha trove. This was for the CMLL tag titles, but way scrappier than your average title match. Charles & Wagner Jr. brought the BEEF and immediately began pasting their opponents with stiff looking lariats and chops. The young hotness of Shocker & Niebla had to use their agility and wit to survive which lead to some really good sequences. They were also much sneakier than your typical vanilla technicos, as they ended up doing everything in their power to win the belts, including double teaming their opponents and interfering whenever needed. It lead to a bristling hot 3rd fall in which the crowds favour swung back and forth as the te…
