[1994-06-03-AJPW-Super Power Series] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
I've been re-watching a lot of the holy grail classics lately. This one, more than any of the others, felt like the GOAT when it was over. Fukuzawa's voice was just about gone by the end and with good reason - the near falls were the most thrilling I have seen in my life. If it's not the GOAT, it is so damn close. The only other matches in the same conversation for me are 12/6/96 and Hokuto-Kandori.

Greatest Match in Wrestlemania History?
Hart/Austin still my pick after 20 years. It's just so violent, heated, & intense with a beautifully executed story. Michaels/Undertaker WM 25 is an epic and a clear #2 for me. Those two stand out more than any others as the best WWE matches I've seen.

Loss is awesome for doing the yearbook stuff
The yearbook threads are always a blast. Can't wait for '98! Thanks for the amazing work, Loss!

1998 Recommendations
Definitely should keep the 12/18/98 Yoshida/Okutsu. It's the fledgling company's first big title match with a neat blend of highspots and shooty matwork. Fun ***+ affair that's worth seeing.

The ass-kickingest matches ever
2/94 Hashimoto/Tenryu jumps to mind right away. Maybe the most brutal liver kick ever delivered.

Greatest WWF/E IC Championship Match of All Time?
Michaels/Razor at Summerslam 95 is far and away the best.

My Top 100 Matches of 1997
My money is on Tamura/Kohsaka, but we shall see.

Universally enjoyable matches
5/92 Kobashi/Kikuchi vs. Kroffat/Furnas The crowd obviously plays a big role, but the action is so freaking hot as well. Letter perfect in every way.

[1997-11-27-AJPW-Real World Tag League] Toshiaki Kawada & Akira Taue vs Kenta Kobashi & Johnny Ace
Yep, it's even confirmed on Ditch's site as 11/27. Glad you liked the Misawa/Akiyama vs. Kawada/Taue match from the following day. It's the last classic AJPW 90s tag for me.

GFOAT
'93 Hokuto and '99 Yoshida are still my favorites. They were just so reliable in terms of pulling good-great matches out of just about anyone. Best ever might be Jaguar, but I haven't seen nearly enough 80s Joshi to judge on that.

[1997-06-06-AJPW] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
This amazing clip was on the Champion Carnival 1996 commercial tape. One of the last holy grails for 90s AJPW...

[1997-06-06-AJPW] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada
Meltzer actually gave this *****+ (yes, five stars plus). Dave being Dave. It wouldn't surprise me if the last true classic Misawa/Kawada match was their 1996 Carnival draw. Unbelievably it still hasn't hasn't shown up in full anywhere...

Best and Worst Strikes
Kawada's knife edge chops were always my favorite. Brutal. KENTA's kicks were fantastic last time I watched one of his matches.

Footnote here is that this was Vince Russo's first Raw as head writer.

My 50 favorite matches
I'll do a favorite match by promotion (with a lean towards "best") to diversify things a bit. Caveat being that I've seen enough of the territory to form a solid opinion. All Japan: Misawa/Akiyama vs. Kawada/Taue, 12/6/96 New Japan: Samurai vs. Ohtani, 1/21/96 UWF 1.0: Takada vs. Yamazaki, 12/5/84 UWF 2.0: Takada vs. Yamazaki, 8/13/88 UWFI: Takada vs. Sano, 10/14/94 RINGS: Tamura vs. Kohsaka, 6/27/98 AJW: Hokuto vs. Kandori, 4/2/93 ARSION: Yoshida vs. Yagi, 2/18/99 JWP: Kansai/Ozaki vs. Hotta/T. Inoue, 1/15/93 WWF/E: Hart vs. Hennig, 6/13/93 WCW: Guerrero vs. Misterio Jr., 10/26/97
- [1994-08-18-UWFi] Vader vs Nobuhiko Takada

[1994-07-28-AJPW-Summer Action Series] Steve Williams vs Mitsuharu Misawa
This has a super exciting run towards the finish, although I thought Misawa's selling of the first BDD was weird. He retreats to the outside for safety but it happens way too suddenly after the move's impact. The spot should have put him down a bit longer to let him reclaim his senses and also to build heat that the next one will finish him for good. It's a small nitpick since that's what eventually happened (the second BDD was incredibly well done); just thought the first could have been executed a little better.

[1994-03-03-AJW] Manami Toyota & Aja Kong vs Bull Nakano & Kyoko Inoue
It's been a good eight years since I've seen this; sadly, the only thing I remember was Toyota's out-of-control screaming. Ha. Looking forward to your review of Aja/Bull vs. Hokuto/Kandori. This is the quintessential AJW story match; the closest approximation to All Japan at its best that you'll find.

Matches of the month
Agreed on the 9/2 Hokuto/Toyota as overrated -- people used to pimp it as some 5-star classic when it doesn't sniff their 1993 JGP match or even their 8/90 draw (which hopefully you'll get to at some point).

[1995-03-26-AJW-Wrestling Queendom: Victory] Manami Toyota vs Aja Kong
Always thought this was a bit sloppy and one sided. Their June rematch is where they got their shit together and delivered a classic.
