I think there are some benefits to the NFL in this. There's some longterm PR if guys have something they can fall back on after football ends. Fewer stories of guys going broke after football on ESPN and all that.

I've been mailing out some trading cards to get autographs lately. Got this in the mail today:

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not holding up Chuck Taylor as an awesome wrestler. I think he has a great character but is slightly above average in the ring.

It's just not to everyone's tastes. I have more a problem for the hate Chuck Taylor is getting in this thread though. How can you hate a guy that makes children in the audience cry and is just otherwise an awesome douchebag heel. Though I admit, the weirder and wackier they get with shit during the matches the more I love it. The match where UMB and Taylor started brawling through a playground and Taylor came down the slide and got chopped was hilarious. But then I love the weird shit that DDT does like the campground brawls and ladders/dogs winning championships. Trying to think of five guys I hate more than Chuck Taylor. Not sure it's possible Pull up the Ring of Honor roster page, close your eyes and point at 5 random guys. Bet you would find at least 4 guys you hate more.

That isn't always true. Chuck Taylor is a good example of where the comedy is used to build heat. He's a douchebag and the comedy spots are him getting his. He acts like an ass and then the face makes him look like an ass in return. The same with the Evans characters. The comedy in his matches are used to put heat on him. The same with the Bucks to a smaller degree. And the Ants use the comedy to fuck with the heels and get heat on them, get the fans behind them. The comedy can be silly at times but there are tons of Chikara matches where it's used to push characters forward and get heat on people. And there are plenty of times where the comedy goes away completely. Look at the Green Ant vs. Tursas blowoff from last year. That was an absolute brawl with a satisfying end to their feud.

I love Sheamus. He wrestles like a hooligan and it's so rare for someone to wrestle like their character that I'm really drawn to him. His mic work can be questionable but that's more the material than him. I've seen some great Sheamus promos.

???? Alex Wright was like 6'2 - 6'3 Yeah I always thought Wright looked to BIG to be a cruiser. Sure he was really lean and maybe that's the point. But the guy towered over most people in that division. I was never a Wright fan then and I'm still not now, but the guy was one of the bright spots in WCW in 95 in terms of delivering pretty solid matches. 6'3'', he towered over Chris Jericho in their matches.

Hell, that match he worked in the UWFi with Robinson had a really good pace and he was almost 60 at the time I think.

That it back about Kamala. Watch some of his early 80s shit and you'll see a much more agile and competent worker than the guy that showed up in the WWF and beyond.

My thing with Orton is, how many times do you get to fail on top before someone finally decides that you shouldn't be pushed so hard. I watched that stupid Ziggler feud from earlier this year and Ziggler never had the advantage for even a tenth of a second in that feud. Why?

The only time I liked Raven in the ring was 1998 in WCW and I chalk that up to working with Benoit and DDP for a lot of the early months.

I've mentioned it in other threads, but I think Jeff Jarrett is really underrated for his longevity and consistency over his 26 year wrestling career. He's made slight tweaks to his style over the years but the quality of his matches have been pretty much the same for about the last 22 years of his career. He might have those really great match of the year type matches but you can depend on him to give you a solid to good match on a fairly consistent basis.

Funny you say this. People used to defend Koshinaka when I would shit all over his 90s work by siting his 80s work. So I guess I was right all along. BTW, his heavyweight work sucks horribly. Stay away.

If you do Styles/Daniels vs. LAX you need to try and track down all the segments for the actual angle. That was just an awesome feud. There are some good matches from the early days. Styles/Lynn/Ki/Psicosis Styles/Lynn/Ki Killings/Ki Killings/Jarrett AMW/XXX - first cage match Hart/Guerrera and Sabin/Guerrera from the first X Cup It's not an all time match but Sting/Jarrett from Bound for Glory 2006 is a must see moment for the promotion as it's the door being closed on the Jarrett era in a very satisfying way.

Looking at the results, they were running a circuit between the regular TN towns and the regular WV towns.

I don't think he should've run through everyone with his finisher. But I think he should've beaten Landell or Orndorff with his finisher and got a non-fluky pinfall victory over them. Landell was annoying and could have instantly regained any heat he lost with a couple of promos. I also don't see why Orndorff and Armstrong couldn't have just fought over the weapon, Lee rolls Orndorff up in a school boy and Armstrong does the three count. The angle goes down almost the exact same way. The DQ was just dumb and instantly devalued the belt.

I was curious what you guys thought about Cornette waiting so long to crown champions in SMW in hindsight. I kind of feel it was a minor mistake. The television was getting really tedious leading up to the tournaments and then is immediately much more compelling the second Brian Lee has the belt.

Even someone like Jim Powers had a run for a few years. It seems like if you're around for long enough, circumstances are going to lead to you getting some sort of chance at moving up from your usual spot on the card. I mean shit, WCW gave Hardwork Bobby Walker some minor pushes over the years.

Brad Armstrong was a main eventer in SMW while he was there. He also had that underdog run with the North American Heavyweight Championship while he was in Mid-South Wrestling. He and Tim Horner also had a considerable reign with the UWF Tag Team Championship.

Bob Holly was probably a career mid-carder.

So it's like the golden glove award? Not based on merit but based on incestual logic?

Davey Richards has no business being a best technical wrestler consideration since he can't construct a good match to save his life.

He got the odd win over other mid-carders in 1993.

It's a temporary statement of where someone currently is in the system. Tito started out as an upper mid-carder in the WWF and slid down the card as he got older and probably finished his career as a low end mid-carder. Calling him a career mid-carder would be ignoring his early years in the WWF.
