General thoughts about 1994
The year plummets a little bit after July. From August on, there are plenty of good - great matches, but they aren't nearly as plentiful, and they aren't coming from all corners of the world they way they are early on. WCW dropping off created a huge gap. I'm not sure at this point which is the best year of all of them, but yeah, you aren't reading too much into things. August - December didn't match January - July.

[1994-12-30-SMW-Christmas Chaos] Cactus Jack vs Chris Candido (Falls Count Anywhere)
Fun, but not as good as the match a few days prior with these two. I mentioned the tag match feeling like something that just happened to get out of control. This was more, "I'm Cactus, and I brawl, so let's go everywhere because that's what I do, and fans expect it", which is how I see a lot of his ECW stuff. Still, I enjoyed this for the stuff they did well, which is similar to the previous match in terms of spots, but more abbreviated. Cactus kisses Tammy! And with that, 1994 is done.

[1994-12-30-SMW-Christmas Chaos] Buddy Landell vs Dirty White Boy
Buddy is using the Memphis theme as his entrance! Buddy keeps tricking the ref into thinking DWB is cheating. He does this hilarious fakeout thing where they are in the corner and the ref is trying to separate them, and he slaps his hand to make it seem like DWB clocked him. Is this a title match? If so, as well-worked as this is, it doesn't make a ton of sense, because a DQ would cost him the title. Buddy works as heel Lawler, hitting DWB with a chain and then hiding it for the duration of the match. DWB finally wins when the action picks up for the last two minutes. I enjoyed this, but I think these two were capable of better.

[1994-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '94] Hulk Hogan vs The Butcher / Hulk Hogan and Vader
Last few minutes. Hogan wins the most trying match of his career. He's not really getting booed, but this crowd is not as into Hogan as they should be. Post-match, Hogan is threatening to lovetap each face of fear with the chair. Savage comes in and teases being a heel (HUGE MISSED OPPORTUNITY) but instead sides with Hogan. Hogan and Savage shake hands and they even copy the zoom in on the hands from the 1987 SNME. Wow. Savage does some posing and soon will be wrestling without a shirt again, thanks to WCW's lack of steroid testing. Hogan and Savage do some obnoxious gloating and Hogan is waxing poetic about his friendship with Beefcake, when Vader barges into the locker room and ends this facade and cuts an AMAZING promo on Hogan. Hogan shoves him and we have a pull-apart brawl. This was an excellent segment once Vader came in.

[1994-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '94] Alex Wright vs Jean Paul Leveque
Last few minutes. Meet Jean Paul Leveque, the guy slated to be in WCW's upcoming cruiserweight division! Heenan predicts superstardom! I laugh at a horrible chinlock spot with HHH whispering to Wright for what seems like 15 minutes before letting Wright do the sequence. HHH's first yearbook photo! Alex Wright gets the win. Welcome to pro wrestling, where you can't always predict who is going to end up where in the long run. I should add that booker Ric Flair put pet project Alex Wright over the future Hunter Hearst Helmsley!

[1994-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '94] Vader vs Jim Duggan
Really good match. I wish these two could have worked together more, because for one night, Duggan looked like the guy from Mid South. He hits him with some pretty hard clotheslines and they do some really good brawling. Duggan missed a middle rope elbow drop (!!), which leads to a rib injury that Vader exploits. Duggan gets in an amazing jumping clothesline after Vader misses a moonsault. Vader was one of the two or three best wrestlers in the world at worst in 1994. He finishes Duggan off with the face eraser. Vader was the master of getting good matches out of those who could work, but didn't always choose to work (Bossman, Duggan, etc.) Really, really good.

[1994-12-27-CMLL] El Pantera vs Felino
The kind of lucha match I'm a sucker for, with all the great matwork and slow build to a satisfying, three fall match. Who would I better know Pantera as, as he looks great here? Another AAA match in '94 -- and this seems to be a theme -- that feels more like a CMLL match, which tells me maybe my initial perceptions of what an "AAA match" looks like were too narrow. Felino was always great and continues to be.

[1994-12-26-SMW-Christmas Chaos] Cactus Jack vs Chris Candido (Falls Count Anywhere)
These two work really well together. This reminds me of (a better version of?) the Cactus/Gilbert matches. Cactus and Candido both do lots of stuff you have seen them do in plenty of matches, so it's not so much that they break new ground. It's more that they just have really great chemistry. Could have been a great, long feud. Cactus and Boo make nice after the match when Boo saves Cactus from a Candido post-match attack.

[1994-12-26-WWF-Raw] King's Court: Diesel / Interview: Bret Hart / Interview: Vinny Pazienza
Vince finds no humor in Lawler's rather humorous insults to the people at ringside. Lawler offers Diesel a handshake and Diesel death grips him, bringing him to his knees. Diesel gets tired of Lawler's berating, and throws him out of the ring while wearing his crown. They did a great job of having Lawler heat up the crowd before Diesel came out to ensure he'd get a big pop. Next, Bret Hart does his first interview after losing the title that has made the yearbook. Bret praises Diesel for giving him a title shot and says he'll deal with Owen and Backlund after the holidays. Next is Vinny Pazienza jumping rope and talking trash on Shawn Michaels.

[1994-12-25-SMW-Christmas Chaos] Cactus Jack & Tracy Smothers vs Chris Candido & Boo Bradley (Falls Count Anywhere Match)
Quite the wild match that goes all over the building. All four take some wild bumps and keep things interesting. I really enjoyed this. One of the better SMW matches. Really had this feel of a wrestling match where things got carried away, instead of your typical ECW "we brawl like this because that's what we do" match.

[1994-12-24-SMW-TV] Rock & Roll Express vs The Infernos
Cornette is at ringside with the Rock & Rolls and jabs one of the Infernos with the tennis racket. Cornette is even leading the crowd in a "Rock and roll" chant, which is surreal. The Gangstas attack the Rock & Rolls after the match and Cornette takes off, which causes Jim Ross to get self-righteous, until he realizes that Cornette came back with extra tennis rackets. He gets in the ring and hits New Jack and Mustafa with a few shots of his own. Great segment. Post-match, Morton tells everyone to snap a picture of the three of them together, because it will never happen again. Cornette does a great job hyping this.

[1994-12-24-SMW-TV] Interview: Buddy Landell / Interview: Cactus Jack & Brian Lee / Interview: The Gangstas
Buddy Landell has a new lease on life and is excited for Christmas Chaos. He wishes DWB's old lady would stop calling him, which gets Jim Ross very angry. He says in spite of his problems, just like Elvis Presley never lost his voice, Buddy never lost his ability to wrestle. Fantastic. Next is Cactus and the pointless Brian Lee. He actually speaks here! We get another brief Cactus poem. Also great. SMW has the two best interviews in wrestling now. Ooh, make it three, as The Gangstas are out.

[1994-12-24-USWA-TV] Tommy Rich vs Bill Dundee
Pretty fun studio match. I would have liked to have seen them get double the time, but that's Memphis. Still, it's the best studio match the USWA has done in 1994. Post-match, Rich and Gilbert attack Dundee and hang him with a belt. Dundee vows revenge to wrap this up.

[1994-12-24-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Diesel
Diesel and Vince have a sit down interview at Titan Tower. Vince asks Diesel if he is looking forward to facing Bret, but first, Diesel turns to the camera to wish everyone a happy holidays! This whole interview is interspersed with black and white clips of him beating up people to the diesel horn. This is some bizarre production. Vince's questions are very high school newspaper interviewing the homecoming queen in how simple they are. It's weird that Diesel had to put Bret over so much, but I think they were doing that so Bret's fans wouldn't turn on Diesel. Still, they laid it on too thick.

[1994-12-24-RINGS] Volk Han vs Mitsuya Nagai
This was a stellar match, the yearbook equivalent of an October surprise. Han is incredible, at times tying Nagai in such ridiculous knots that he's almost applying painful holds to himself! He has a ready-made counter for everything Nagai throws at him and bends him into a ridiculous pretzel. Nagai gets in his shots too, but he can't seem to string together any momentum. This was a master's class in matwork, and it's my new favorite RINGS match. I don't know how much this is talked up, but I thought it was a bit of a lost classic.
