[1994-08-05-CMLL] The Headhunters vs Miguel Perez Jr & Ricky Santana
Pretty wild brawl, and I could see how some could love it. It has fat guy planchas, and blood, and weapons, and it definitely feels like a war. But something was missing for me, and it's difficult to place it, and I'm not sure what it was, but I didn't care for this in spite of all of that.

[1994-08-05-NJPW-G1 Climax] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Yoshiaki Yatsu
I wasn't clear on what the final was. I figured it was Hash/Kosh since that was the last chronological match I could figure out from the listings. But yeah, so far, this has been a disappointing G-1.

[1994-08-05-NJPW-G1 Climax] Hiroshi Hase vs Shiro Koshinaka
My reaction at this point when I see a Hase giant swing is "No, not again." Totally sick of the move. But also, this is just a bunch of sitting stationary in a hold until the last few minutes when they start popping out nearfalls -- like a really poorly worked juniors match. If Koshinaka had any decent offense, when it was his turn to shine, this could have been really good. I don't really buy all the fatigue at the end. This was paced like a 60-minute draw, despite only going about 20 minutes. It got hot at the end, but everything that preceded it just didn't do very much for me.

[1994-08-05-NJPW-G1 Climax] Yoshiaki Fujiwara vs Yoshiaki Yatsu
Couldn't get into this. They never really kicked it into the next gear. You got the feeling these guys weren't crazy about each other, but this doesn't really build heat. Even the things that I did enjoy like Yatsu's cheapshot when the referee was trying to restrain Fujiwara didn't get the reaction it should have. Felt like they missed the mark.

[1994-08-04-NJPW-G1 Climax] Riki Choshu vs Yoshiaki Yatsu
Former tag team partners going at it! Choshu takes a bulldog on the floor. Yatsu applies a sitting indian deathlock thing and Choshu sells the hell out of it. Average match, but Choshu really knows how to build heat.

[1994-08-03-NJPW-G1 Climax] Hiroshi Hase vs Shinya Hashimoto
I'm used to these two having pretty long matches, so it was nice to see what they could do with less than 10 minutes match. Hase tries to wrestle Hashimoto, and Hashimoto responds just by kicking the hell out of him for a few minutes. Hase catches him off guard with a massive upset. Not much of a match, but a nice moment.

Where was Shawn?
Can anyone explain why Shawn wasn't in the ring between Wrestlemania X and a Razor Ramon match on Raw that August? Also, does anyone know if he was just out selling the Sid injury post-WM 11 or if there was some other reason he was out? He had quite the sketchy record for a few years.

[1994-08-01-WWF-Raw] King's Court: Bob Backlund
Jerry Lawler finds a guy in the crowd proposing and is hilarious in handling everything. Lawler advises one of them to get everything he can in their name, and Savage hilariously agrees. Mr. Bob Backlund is born and does a great (you know what I mean) promo.

[1994-08-01-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon
Excellent match! Easily their best non-gimmicked match together. Shawn has been out since WM, and following his normal pattern, he returns from an absence obnoxiously good. He mixes in his great bumping with a more aggressive streak than usual. A really good match for both guys, and one that hasn't been as remembered as some of the other good WWF TV matches during this time. Really, really good. Savage continues to act as Vince's surrogate over the court case.

Comments that don't warrant a thread - Part 3
There hasn't been a really big pro wrestling story since Chris Benoit killed his family, so if it's on the wrestling side, I'm betting it's hyperbole.

[1994-07-30-WCW-Saturday Night] Sting & Ricky Steamboat vs Ric Flair & Steve Austin
I have gone back and forth on this match a few times, but this time, I watched it and really liked it. Austin bumped so hard that I'm in some ways surprised it took as long for his body to start breaking down as it did. It has a weird layout in that there's no real extended FIP, and that does hurt it, but I still thought this was a good effort with all four guys working really hard. Weird finish, as Flair fails to catch Sherri when Sting throws her to Flair on the floor. Austin pins Steamboat at that point while the audience is distracted and the finish gets no reaction.

[1994-07-24-WCW-Saturday Night] Dusty and Dustin Rhodes
This is a famous and awesome angle, but I'll recap just for those unfamiliar. Bunkhouse Buck is having a squash against Larry Santo when Dusty Rhodes calmly walks in the ring behind Buck and drops some elbows on him. Terry Funk tries running out and Dustin gets in his shots. Meng then gets in the ring and is face to face with Dusty but a bunch of babyfaces fill the ring and separate them. This is followed by Dusty doing what could possibly be the best promo in history. I'll transcribe. "Come here, Dustin. I want everybody to bear with me for just a minute. I wanna talk to my son in front of the whole world. "When you were born, when you were a baby, when you were born, I went off to seek my fame and fortune. I neglected you. Then later on, when I became world's heavyweight champion, I neglected you. Then lately I became this corporate cowboy if you will, in public with a suit and tie on, and I neglected you. And when it came down to choose a partner, I was off in Hollywood and I neglected you. "Let me tell you something -- Bunkhouse Buck, let me tell ya, Col. Parker, they all nothin' but chicken feeds, that's all they are, brother. Let me tell you something else. Terry Funk is nothing but a lowlife, watermelon thief, egg suckin' dog! And let me tell you something about Arn Anderson. Arn Anderson, my son offered up his innocence, and you paid him back in scorn. The hell with you, Arn Anderson! Arn Anderson has never been nothin' but a walk-behinder. And when you walk behind and you're not a leader, then the view never changes baby. The view never changes, baby. The view never changes. "You have the ability to be the world's heavyweight wrestling champion. There is not a greater athlete at your age in this sport. But I ... I want to ask you a favor. I wanna ask you a favor in front of ... in front of God and the whole world. I know that the Clash of Champions on August the 24th, you put your name on the dotted line. I don't want you to look for another partner. I don't want you to go and find another man. I don't want you to go out and get on your knees and beg another scum-suckin' pig to be your partner. I'm asking you if you can carry this ol' out of shape, old bent-out, old spinly legged man ... *I* wanna be your partner! I don't need no handshake because up there right now tonight, there's ... there's people with their brothers and sisters and their wives. They are blood! The Kennedys were blood. The Earps were blood. The Rhodes are blood. I don't need a handshake. What I need now from you is just a hug and a kiss to seal the deal, baby." Even the transcript doesn't do full justice to the promo, which has him commanding the crowd in an amazing way. There is this incredible moment where the crowd pops after he says he wants to be Dustin's partner. But Dusty isn't ready for it yet, so he holds up his hand calmly and they immediately go quiet. THAT is a master. The emotion and delivery of all of this is phenomenal.

[1994-07-30-WCW-Saturday Night] Nick Bockwinkel statement
Bockwinkel says Flair vs Hogan was the most watched wrestling match in WCW history. Not even remotely true. Bockwinkel announces that Flair will get a rematch against Hogan at the Clash on August 24. He says Sherri's interference did not go unnoticed, and he fines her $25,000. Even in the booking, they can't give a heel a break.

[1994-07-30-WWF-Superstars] Bret Hart vs Bob Backlund
Excellent match - really unique compared to what was happening in the WWF at the time. Backlund aggressively goes after Bret as the announcers make the point that it has been ten years since he challenged for the title. The match is all about Backlund trying to school Bret on the mat. Every time Bret gets the better of an exchange, Backlund lunges himself at Bret out of desperation. Backlund doing two bridge ups in a row from Bret's pinning attempts was incredible. Great finish to set up the angle, as Backlund prematurely celebrates a victory and Bret catches him with an inside cradle. Backlund slaps Bret when he extends his hand for a second handshake, then locks him in the crossface chicken wing while looking insane. This was tremendous. I know this didn't light the world on fire, but the whole Backlund push and "repackaging" (If you can even call it that ...) is one of the best things the WWF has ever done.

[1994-07-30-Michinoku Pro] Taka Michinoku vs Jado
Wilder match than I expected. Lots of chair and table throwing from Jado, and Taka kicks the referee in the stomach when he tries to calm him down. Some cool stuff from Jado, like turning Taka's top rope superplex attempt into a brutal looking gourdbuster. Obviously a HOT building as well. Action-packed in a different way than you're used to. Feels more like an ECW match than a Michinoku Pro match. Great finishing spot with Jado doing a top rope rana into a pin in one movement.

[1994-07-28-AJPW-Summer Action Series] Steve Williams vs Mitsuharu Misawa
And with that, Misawa's two-year run with the Triple Crown comes to an end. They absolutely worked a match befitting of the moment. I agree with Ditch that it blows away the September challenge, as Doc is so much better here than he was then. And Misawa, what can you say? He has so much credibility that getting the crowd involved in every momentum shift and pin attempt looks easy. Those kickouts in the final 10 minutes were a master's class -- surprising without being overdone. The struggle over the backdrop driver was awesome. Misawa sold his ass off and did everything he could to put Doc over as a worthy champion who outwrestled him. There was no fluke feel to the title change at all. Maybe that seems like something not particularly praise-worthy, but Misawa had such a following and was so respected as the top guy that convincing an audience that someone who beat him deserved it is tricky. Doc's post-match celebration is a great moment, even though the comm release overdubbed his music, which took away from it a little.
