[1994-06-16-WWF-King of the Ring] Bret Hart vs Diesel
Of course not. It was just a casual observation I had watching the final few minutes of this.

[1994-07-24-WCW-Main Event] Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat
Could this crowd care any less? There is lots of piped in noise, but they barely move until Steamboat rolls up Sherri while holding Flair in the figure four near the finish. From there it is pretty heated, but the match is almost over. Not a good match, much less by their standards, but it wasn't really given time or focus to be. Plus, Sherri had to get in her shots, and she was too much of the focus. And when Flair is the top heel and they're trying to draw big with Hogan on top, why is Steamboat getting visual falls on him? Austin runs in for the DQ and Flair, Austin and Sherri put the boots to Steamboat. Flair and Austin should have been paired at this point.

[1994-07-23-NWA] Sabu vs Al Snow (Ladder)
Thanks to Shawn/Razor, now ladder matches are the hot gimmick match on the indy scene. Sabu had one with Candido a month prior to this that I wanted to also include, but couldn't find anyone who had it. This ladder is pretty ridiculously tall for the venue they are working. I'm so over ladder matches at this point. I liked the Candido/Smothers one more than the others just because it was more about the psychology. I like Shawn/Razor II because of all the work focused on destroying Shawn's knee. But this, while it has its moments, is exactly why I have trouble getting into them at this point. Slow climbing and the same spots used in almost all of them. I guess all the fans sacrificing their chairs made this one unique. But it felt a little pointless after a while.

[1994-06-16-WWF-King of the Ring] Bret Hart vs Diesel
And that's worth harping on that one point? Did I say that the closing to this is absolutely not like any other Bret Hart match ever? I don't understand your interpretation of my point to such an extreme. It can be both a typical Bret Hart finishing stretch *and* have Pat Patterson's fingerprints, just as I'm sure most of Bret Hart's big matches (including the Yoko TV match) had Patterson's fingerprints on the finish. Does saying that one thing is true mean that nothing else can possibly be true?

[1994-07-23-WCW-Saturday Night] Steve Austin and Ricky Steamboat
Austin has come a long way as an interview. Steamboat interrupts Austin after the trash talk gets to be too much. He points out that he has praised Austin, but that he has also wrestled all the greats, and Austin can't touch their jock. Austin says he doesn't want to touch their jock, then they bleep out quite a bit of what he said after that. It leads to Steamboat slapping him and that's that. Was what Austin said really that bad?

[1994-07-23-SMW-TV] Interview: Terry Gordy / Interview: Dirty White Boy
Terry Gordy talks while they show footage of him beating Jun Akiyama in All Japan. Then we cut to an interview with Dirty White Boy. He's the champ again now, as Jake started no-showing and they did a phantom title change to wrap things up. DWB is in a groove at this point, as the Jake feud was good to him.

[1994-07-23-SMW-TV] The Gangstas debut
The Gangstas debut! Yes! They don't trust the police force, so they use their own security. Bob Caudle talks about how this makes him uncomfortable. Ha! They haven't even done anything yet! That was a superstar entrance. Okay squash, but New Jack ends up headbutting the ring mat at the finish. New Jack says 30 years ago, they would have been strung up and hung in trees for beating up two white boys like they just did. They heel themselves big time on the crowd. New Jack ain't here to be liked, he's here to get paid. He finishes the promo by telling OJ Simpson to keep up the good work, as now they have two less to worry about. Lou Farrakhan will be the next President! Snoop Dogg is innocent! They are about to set SMW on fire. Indeed.

[1994-07-23-USWA-TV] J.C. Ice vs Doug Gilbert / Interview: Doug Gilbert & Dream Machine
Tommy Rich, Dream Machine and Scott Bowden are at ringside. Wolfie D is not in the building. You can probably guess how this one is going to turn out. The referee ended up finding the chain on Doug Gilbert after the match and reversing the decision. Someone needs to figure out the economic impact of the USWA closing. Whatever chain supplier they used had to have taken a hit.

[1994-07-23-WWF-Superstars] Heartbreak Hotel: Ted DiBiase, Lex Luger and Tatanka
DiBiase announced that he has signed Lex Luger. After some hesitation, Luger comes out, but Tatanka cuts him off before he can say anything, and says he can't believe Luger sold out. Tatanka and DiBiase have words. Luger tells DiBiase no deal and tells Tatanka he didn't sell out. Tatanka doesn't believe it. This was a unique angle that for whatever reason has been forgotten.

I love Leslie Nielson, I just don't understand how making a joke of the top angle that is meant to sell the next PPV benefits anyone.

[1994-07-23-WWF-Superstars] 1-2-3 Kid vs Jeff Jarrett
Nice little match. Lots of aggression. This is a side of Jarrett we needed to see more often. Jarrett attacks him in the post-match with a piledriver. Jerry Lawler is a riot on commentary.

[1994-07-22-AJPW-Summer Action Series] Mitsuharu Misawa & Kenta Kobashi vs Steve Williams & Johnny Ace
Rare match that did not air on "30" TV and was not released commercially. It was recommended by jdw. Nice find. Ace holds his own here and looks really good. Doc is at his peak and nearly takes Misawa's head off with a lariat on the floor. Misawa is the one worked over for most of this while Kobashi is put in the position to save him. Kobashi takes his lumps too, but fares much better than Misawa. I guess that works, because Doc is challenging for the TC in six days, and Kobashi will be challenging Doc for the TC in about six weeks. This doesn't have the layers of story that your best AJ matches have (I say that still realizing it's a smart match), but it's a tremendous 27 minutes or so of great action, bomb throwing and nice tag team moves. All Japan's version of a balls out spotfest - and a great one. Ace kicking out of Misawa's Tiger Driver was a little much, as the flying lariat finish wasn't as good, but that's a small quibble in an otherwise really excellent match.

[1994-06-16-WWF-King of the Ring] Bret Hart vs Diesel
I was referring to the stuff with Shawn taking the crazy bump to the floor, Anvil's involvement, the dramatic nearfalls based on that, etc.

Hulk Hogan's best matches
Just watched Hogan vs Flair from Bash at the Beach '94 and it should be in this discussion. At this point, I think it's the best match I've ever seen involving Hogan.

[1994-07-17-WCW-Bash at the Beach] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan
There are so many weird things in Michael Buffer's intros that I don't know where to start. Comparing this match to putting a man on the moon and saying Hogan has had a 3-year layoff I guess are the places to start. This is a surprisingly GREAT (yes, GREAT!) match. Extremely well laid out, to a point that you can tell some things were practiced meticulously, but it still feels organic. The match layout is as big and grandiose as you expect Flair vs Hogan on a first meeting (work with me) to be. Most Flair matches are Flair matches. This is not a Ric Flair match. This is a Hulk Hogan match. Ric Flair simply the heel, Hulk Hogan's opponent. He's a guy playing a role. If you're a Flair fan like me, but you can get past that, it's a lot easier to enjoy this match. To Flair's credit, he takes that role about as far as it can go. But this isn't something that resembles his typical layout. Anyone who bought this show and paid to see Hogan vs Flair couldn't have left disappointed -- unless they were Flair fans who wanted him to kick Hogan's ass. But in terms of delivering a satisfying match that seemed like a big deal, in terms of Hogan looking relevant and like a guy that could still go, this did everything it needed to do. I liked it way more than I expected.

[1994-07-17-WCW-Bash at the Beach] Steve Austin vs Ricky Steamboat
Not one of their best matches. There's a lot of down time and the match doesn't really have a clear focus until the last 10 minutes or so. It gets good then, but the first half of this is disappointing. They worked hard and did some good stuff, but it just didn't come together for me. Austin purposely trying to get DQd multiple times in the final stretch is the best part of this. This match also teaches the lesson: You want to fire up a WCW crowd? Do a series of tombstone reversals! It works every time.

[1994-07-17-WCW-Bash at the Beach] Terry Funk & Bunkhouse Buck vs Arn Anderson & Dustin Rhodes
Dustin takes a crazy bump at one point outside the ring, down the stairs in front of the ring and to the floor. Arn's turn is so telegraphed by him not wrestling in the match and being slow to come to Dustin's rescue when he is being attacked on the outside. Decent match, but great angle and continuation of this feud.

[1994-07-17-WAR-2nd Anniversary Show] Ultimo Dragon vs Great Sasuke
Sasuke has been the best junior in the world in '94, and he has had some outstanding matches. This is really good too, but it's nowhere near his best. So many of the things they do have been overdone and worn out in other matches (I don't need to see a standoff after a pair of leg sweep and pin attempts with both guys going for simultaneous dropkicks EVER AGAIN). I know this isn't New Japan, but this layout is exactly the layout that people criticize NJ juniors for -- matwork for 10 minutes, followed by nearfalls for 10 minutes. It's a good match, but it doesn't hold up as well as everything else from Sasuke has this year.
