[1994-05-16-WWF-Raw] King's Court: Nikolai Volkoff
Lawler says Piper started wearing a dress to get out of being drafted when he was 18 years old. "The army didn't take him in, but the doctor did take him out." COMMERCIALS After the break, DiBiase announces that Nikolai Volkoff is his latest purchase. They force Volkoff to wear new tights that say "Property of the Million Dollar Man" and for reasons I never understood, have a cent sign on the side instead of a dollar sign. Vince: "Nikolai Volkoff a once proud weightlifter, much like Mark Henry today!" This was intended to get DiBiase over as a jerk in his new role of manager, but it just fell flat.

[1994-05-15-AAA-Triplemania II-B] El Hijo del Santo & Jushin Liger & Octagon & Tiger Mask vs Blue Panther & Eddy Guerrero & La Parka & Psicosis
Wow, this is a lot of awesome guys in one match. Pretty breathtaking first fall -- everything is crisply executed and the pace is incredibly fast. Liger adapts extremely well to this style. The rudos get more aggressive in the second fall and target each technico except Santo at various points. Then the action picks up in the third fall. There are definitely lucha matches I like better than this, but this was fantastic, and I think it really captures the essence of the AAA boom while at the same time showing that Liger and Kanemoto really adapted well to this environment.

[1994-05-15-AAA-Triplemania II-B] Mascara Sagrada vs Black Cat
This is a world class carry job from Black Cat. Almost everything highspot Sagrada does looks awkward, but Black Cat puts on a great performance. One thing Sagrada can do reasonably well is lay on the mat and sell the pain of a hold, so that's what he's put in a position to do, and the match works. I love that BC keeps the figure four on outside the ring when Sagrada tries to roll out of it and they hit the arena floor! That could have ended awkwardly. Sagrada makes a comeback swinging a chair pretty hard a few minutes later. BC goes all Tenryu and tries a series of powerbombs for the win, but Sagrada reverses to win the first fall. The second fall sees Sagrada attempt a few quick pins, but not really get results. BC ups the aggression, ripping the mask and applying a hammerlock and a Boston Crab. Sagrada keeps teasing a comeback and BC keeps cutting him off with great moves, like a middle rope DDT and a cradle piledriver. However, that earns him a DQ, which appears to be because of the execution of it (Not sure which lucha rule that breaks), and Sagrada lucks into a win. This isn't as proficient as most of the best lucha libre, but the match is paced and laid out so well that it really doesn't matter. I loved this.

Ric Flair (sigh)
That Citiwalk has a Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, and it's really out of character for Flair to not go there.

[1994-05-14-ECW-When Worlds Collide] Arn Anderson & Terry Funk vs Bobby Eaton & Sabu / Interview: Paul E. Dangerously
I'm surprised Joey Styles was able to take all of these shots at WCW when they were lending WCW talent. I expected to really like this, but surprisingly, it didn't do much for me at all. There just wasn't anything memorable about it. It was probably a better match than some of the wild ECW brawls from the glory years that came later, and it's cool seeing Arn and Eaton in ECW Arena. But besides that, it was just there. The spinning toehold looks ridiculous happening in the middle of a wild brawl. Arn turning on Funk surprised me, but didn't really make sense. Not good or bad. I am indifferent. I really loved Paul E.'s promo after the match, but it felt too scripted.

Sounds like someone has been messing with his Wiki page.

1990-1991 was his last run there.

Buddy Landel
No, which is a shame, because despite looking older, he was still in his early 30s in 1995 when he had his comeback. The two people that suffered most from SMW closing were Tony Anthony and Buddy Landell. Neither guy really had national star potential, but both could be really effective as regional stars. Due to changes in wrestling, sadly, guys like that weren't in demand as much and weren't going to be able to make a decent living anymore. It sucks. I'm not quite sure why both guys didn't end up in the USWA. That was eventually going to go belly up too, but at least they would have had another two years or so. I'm also not sure why they didn't end up working some of the smaller indies without TV that were still in the Southern style tradition, groups like Music City Wrestling. Cornette got Tony Anthony into the WWF (along with Smothers and Bill Irwin) for those Jobbers With Gimmicks roles, but that just reeks of something the WWF would get bored with quickly, and they did. Landell had a cup of coffee in the WWF right after SMW died, and I always suspected Cornette lobbied for the Bret Hart match on Raw as a way for Buddy to prove himself in a good match. Something happened that kept him from having a run there and I don't remember what.

Crockett had plans to push him on top for a feud with Flair, and it didn't materialize because Landell "overslept" the day of the taping where they were going to kick off the angle. His drug problems destroyed his career. If you're not now, you'll become a fan when watching the 1995 Yearbook and seeing those amazing promos.

Over the Limit
It's interesting, because I think what Punk needs more than anything is to be a part of the top angle on the show. With titles devalued the way they are, I think just being a part of the most important thing happening is more important than wearing the gold. I know Rock was teasing another title run in his post-WM Raw promo. I'm interested in how they're going to move the belt from Punk to Rock, or from Punk to someone else who will drop it to Rock.

Over the Limit
Was there any good reason for Punk and Bryan to not close out the show last night? Is he ever going to get real top billing as champion? He has had this incredibly long reign by modern standards, but he just feels like a glorified IC champ because there's always at least one angle that's considered the real main event above him.

[1994-05-14-WCW-Saturday Night] Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat
Spectacular match. This worked better than Spring Stampede, because they were both in even more of a groove. It's probably the best free TV match (not counting specials like Clashes) that WCW ever had. It's Flair/Steamboat, I don't feel the need to really review it or say a ton about it, but while the '94 series isn't the '89 series, not much is, and it's definitely a pair of matches they should both be very proud of. I guess you could call this Flair's last classic, and Steamboat's for that matter.

[1994-05-14-SMW-TV] Jake Roberts, Dirty White Boy and Bob Armstrong / Jake Roberts vs Dirty White Boy
Jake is mocking DWB's impaired vision and eyepatch. His ability to manipulate emotions and work a smart match - even this late - is second to very few. Give him a babyface injury to exploit and he proves he's the master. This match should be studied by every single heel in wrestling today. At a certain point, Jake distracts the ref and The Samurai comes out and rips off DWB's eye patch. Other babyfaces try to point this out, but are told to leave the ringside area. Now Jake can work over the eye and wow does he deliver. He takes tape off of his own wrist and starts gouging DWB in the eye with it! The milage he can get out of a simple eye poke is just amazing. DWB finally puts together the best comeback he can. Finally, Jake beats up the photographer, steals his camera and blinds DWB with the flash before slivering back in with a DDT! Incredible finish! Call me crazy, but this is one of the best matches of the year. It's nothing special from an action standpoint, but the psychology is so strong. Bob Caudle and Les Thatcher are also really great at explaining all of this on commentary.

[1994-05-14-USWA-TV] Eddie Gilbert celebration
Clip of Lawler/Gilbert vs Jarrett/Dream Machine from Mid South Coliseum. Gilbert turns on Lawler, throwing fire in his face. This is awesome in execution, but ridiculous. Gilbert had turned way too many times in Memphis at this point, and Lawler looks dumb for trusting him enough to team with him, considering their history. Regardless of anything else, HE RAN OVER YOU WITH A CAR. Gilbert should be a heel for life in the territory, or at the very least, on the opposite side of Lawler. Brian Christopher eventually makes the save, but gets attacked by Doug Gilbert. EDDIE MARLIN then makes the save, throwing punches at the heels but getting taken down himself. Like I said, extremely well-executed, but when you assume your fans are stupid, you end up with stupid fans. On that point, Jeff Jarrett finally sees enough and makes the save, which is even more stupid after he just turned on Lawler the week before. Back at the studio, Gilbert is interviewed. Hey, there's Ian Rotten and the Eliminators with a birthday cake! Well, we know how that's going to end up. He does his famous "I Am The USWA" speech, which seems to be him shooting a little bit. After a commercial, Gilbert offers a piece of cake to Colorado Kid, who turns them down and gets attacked and covered in the cake for his troubles. Well, I knew someone would wear it. Lawler and Christopher finally make the save. Like I said, these are all pros, and this is well done, but this feels like a desperate angle from a dying promotion.

[1994-05-14-USWA-TV] Brian Christopher kendo stick demonstration
Brian Christopher and Doug Gilbert have a kendo stick match coming up at Mid South Coliseum, and Christopher wears protective gear and takes a shot from an expert to get the gimmick over. I guess wrestling loved the headlines in '94 -- Singapore caning, Tonya Harding, OJ Simpson -- because we saw them all exploited at some point.

[1994-05-14-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Bret Hart
Vince is wearing the old WWF blazer with royal blue pants! Bret says that Helen told him the difference between the two is that Owen was born bad but always tried to be good, while Bret was born good and always tried to be bad. I ... am not sure that makes any sense at all. Bret accepts the challenge for King of the Ring from Diesel.
