If you look at Coffey's post, he's more interested in discussing the whole of Jericho's career than looking at where he stands right now.

Oh, the big Jericho match worth seeing is against The Rock at No Mercy in 2001. It's probably his finest performance, and one of the better matches from the company during those days. I also like the forgotten Smackdown tag around that time with him teaming with Rock against Austin and Angle, and his 2002 RAW match where he carried Kane to a solid 15 minute match was surprisingly strong.

Jericho is overrated for sure, and that's coming from someone who was a huge fan of his starting in WCW because I found his act so funny. But if you look at his career, he was *at best* decent before coming into the WWF, and probably not even that good. Where he's strong is that he's always had a really solid audience connection and has stayed consistently over for the past decade regardless of how he has been used. So I think it's possible to argue that Jericho was overrated and still argue that he deserved a bigger push at times without being contradictory. I think he's been a part of some really good-great matches for sure, but the self-importance of the last few runs has been a little weird. His whole tendency to fancy himself a "character" who creates "stories" feels pretentious and overly calculated sometimes, and all the reinventions can be overbearing. He's also one of the guys that started the trend of wrestlers presenting themselves as entertainers within a wrestling context, which is something that I hate. Miz doing promos about being more charismatic than his opponents is an offshoot of that, and almost always annoys me. Where I think he's at his strongest is in working long feuds with twists and turns that keep people interested.

I still think that's unnecessarily harsh. If someone is trying to enjoy lucha and isn't getting it right away, just to wash your hands of it seems a little defeatist. What's the point of talking about wrestling on message boards if everyone has already made up their mind about everything and can't be swayed by someone making good points? And I get the point -- more people watching lucha isn't necessarily a good thing, and the reasons you mentioned are part of why. It's just something that I enjoy quite a bit and hate to see people who I know would enjoy it if they just got it dismiss it so easily.

Thanks. There are definitely some matches that look interesting on paper, so maybe we'll just use those.

I don't recall her on TV again after that, but that was at the height of their real-life problems and Liz was about to divorce him in real life. Flair and Perfect mentioned having more dirt on her after Wrestlemania in at least one TV segment, but it was dropped quickly.

They hyped that they would be showing something in a huge way though, even during the event itself. It felt like a massive bait and switch.

Dave mentioned the profit motive with developmental. Ideally, WWE would treat the whole division as a loss leader.

I know this is the WCW thread, but Michael Hayes in 1988 World Class is one of the best babyfaces I've ever seen. It's a shame the whole Freebirds breakup thing happened so late in the decade instead of when the promotion was hot, because it was tremendous and should have had a much bigger impact than it did.
