[1995-09-16-USWA-TV] Heavenly Bodies vs PG-13
Footage from MSC. Good to see the Bodies mixed into things now. Doug Gilbert is in the referee. Gilbert screws over the SMW team by counting really slow when the Bodies are in a position to win and really fast when PG-13 make a comeback. All weird behavior for a babyface. We get about five minutes of good action before Smothers run in to help the Bodies. Gilbert misses it, but instead hits Pritchard with the hubcap so PG-13 can win. Post-match, Smothers does a number with the Confederate flag. Fun beatdown, but yeah, Doug Gilbert is doing heel stuff as a babyface and it doesn't really work.

[1995-09-16-USWA-TV] Jerry Lawler vs Jesse James Armstrong
Footage from MSC with Road Dogg doing a lot of shuck-and-jive dancing between every single move. I don't know that I'd call him good, but he does put out a lot of effort in Memphis. Brandon Baxter runs in after a ref bump, Lawler goes after him and Baxter tosses a chain at Road Dogg. He nails Lawler with it, and Cory Maclin, who he got physical with on TV recently, comes to the rescue! Cory Maclin throws a nice punch at Brandon Baxter.

[1995-09-12-ECW-TV] Interview: Cactus Jack
Famous promo where Cactus walks through the plight of previous hardcore wrestlers such as Ray Stevens, Harley Race and Dynamite Kid. "How many of you shed a tear for Eddie Gilbert?" The way he managed to weave all this venting into a point about Tommy Dreamer that actually made sense was brilliant.

[1995-09-12-ECW-TV] Music Video: Raven & Stevie Richards vs The Pit Bulls
Clips of the Raven/Richards vs Pit Bulls feud interspersed with the video for Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot". This is the kind of thing that set ECW apart. Great stuff.

[1995-09-11-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan vs Lex Luger
Just the post-match, although Hogan/Luger was kind of an Apter mag dream match at the time. Hogan wants to know whose side he's on and why the Dungeon only attacked Hogan and not him. Sting mediates and suggests that since Vader is out of the picture, Luger would make a great replacement. Savage would rather go in a man down since he doesn't trust Luger, so Hogan is the swing vote, and Hogan reluctantly agrees to let Luger join their team. Luger wants the title shot that Vader was promised down the line if he agrees to team with them. They did a good job making the most of Luger during this time.

[1995-09-11-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair and Lex Luger
This is the first time we see the full Nitro set, as they're in an arena as opposed to the Mall of America. I remember being wowed by the whole Nitro setup, which looked great for the time. Flair is out for an interview with Gene, and says the only thing missing in South Beach the night before was Arn Anderson. He's told he was instead in his hotel room talking to his wife and kid on the phone. He compares them to Joe Montana and Lawrence Taylor. Luger is out, and Flair goes gaga over him. Luger tells him some things never change and he's still too much, and Flair says "And I'm gonna stay too much! WHOOO!" Flair is great here.

[1995-09-11-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels vs Sid
Last few minutes. He beats the big guy with three superkicks. Pretty decent action and a clever finish. I didn't care for the stuff with Shawn early in the year as a heel, but since the babyface turn, he's been on fire, having excellent matches and being pretty over. Post-match, Shawn does the striptease and I remember why he's so ... Shawn.

[1995-09-11-WWF-Raw] Goldust vignette
They're still experimenting with Goldust's look. Now he has a tophat. In this one, he's outside in Hollywood, possibly against a green screen, and teases a feud with the Undertaker.

[1995-09-11-WWF-Raw] Davey Boy Smith vs Razor Ramon
Last few minutes. Not much heat for this considering that Razor should have been hot coming off the great match at Summerslam and Davey Boy has just turned and been repackaged. A ref bump leads to Dean Douglas running in. 1-2-3 Kid comes out to try to stop him and gets hung out to dry and punched in the face. Kid comes back in to splash Davey Boy, Kid misses and splashes Razor and Davey Boy wins by DQ. Even though Kid and Razor are getting beaten down here, it's telling that Davey Boy is the top heel and Douglas has a run-in to theoretically put heat on him, yet Razor isn't doing a clean job to him when he needs momentum, Douglas is an afterthought, and the big takeaway is the Kid/Razor dissension. Height of the Clique stuff, I suppose. Post-match, Kid and Razor have an argument, with Kid saying Razor always treats him like a little kid and doesn't give him any respect, so he wants a match next week so he can beat him again.

Are psychology, "logic" and storytelling within a match overrated?
S.L.L. said that about as diplomatically as it could be said. Thanks for making the point by focusing on the argument and not the person. I think that's what makes this board worth visiting. I agree with the sentiment. I'm not inside Jerry's head, so Jerry, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think some points you make are intended to be devil's advocate points. If not that, I think sometimes you throw a question out without having an idea in your head yet of where you stand on it, because you are curious how we'll answer. I think that's perfectly fine, and I mention it not to single you out, but instead so we have a better understanding of where you're coming from when posing such questions. Just to be honest, I don't really care for devil's advocate posting most of the time unless it's coming from a place of genuine conviction. Otherwise, why advocate for the devil?

[1995-09-10-AJPW-Summer Action Series II] Mitsuharu Misawa vs Akira Taue
Good match I guess, but really disappointing. I couldn't figure out what they were going for. At one point, Taue was doing all the face work, which felt like a given considering their previous match. The pair of snake-eyes (for lack of a better way to describe what that move was) looked great. Then, he switched to the knee and that became the focus of the match. Again, everything looked great. Then Taue abandoned that down the final stretch when they started throwing bombs. Then he'd jump back to the face or knee when he had the chance, then abandon it again. Misawa sold his ass off for Taue, but it seemed like this match was lacking focus. The entirety of 1995 has basked in the afterglow of the Carny final, and I didn't expect this to be at that level. But I was hoping for something a little more on point. This was a lot of really good wrestling with no overarching storyline hook or in-match narrative to bring it all together. Their 02/93 match was better than this, which is weird considering that was a total Misawa carry job and Taue is a much better wrestler by this time. Also, after losing to Misawa in such a grueling, epic match, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to take away from Taue losing again, in less time, and by putting up less of a fight than he did before. Compare it to Hansen/Misawa, which had Misawa getting closer to victory every time. Taue would win the Triple Crown eight months later, but this felt like a step back for him.

[1995-08-27-WWF-Summerslam] Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon (Ladder)
It's funny you say that, because my thought was that this was much less Shawn Show than usual, because he spent most of the match selling. I was impressed by how little of the match involved the ladder compared to WM X, and when the ladder was involved, I thought they did a better job of logically incorporating it. Also, the pre-ladder wrestling in this match was so much better than the pre-ladder wrestling at WM X. I'm sure there are more ladder spots, but this is also a much longer match, so there's more of everything. I think in terms of the percentage of the match that involves the ladder, WM X would probably win out.

[1995-09-09-SMW-TV] Buddy Landell and Jim Cornette history
Landell talks between video highlights of all the stuff that has led to his babyface turn and departure from Cornette's Militia. Long, but well done. This is the first clip of Landell officially being ousted from the Militia on the yearbook. Terry Gordy can barely do the angle in the ring. So sad. Landell holds them all at bay for a long time before the numbers catch up. I really think they should have put the heat from all this on one of the Militia members instead of Cornette himself, but that's how Cornette booked. Cornette's furious promo kicking Landell out is incredible, as is Landell's summary at the end closing things out.

[1995-09-09-USWA-TV] Interview: Jesse James Armstrong / Interview: Jerry Lawler
Oops, still more. He's back out later in the show to do more gloating. Lawler calls in to cut a promo on him by phone. He's supposedly in Cleveland, but Road Dogg is skeptical. He ends up roughing up Cory Maclin and PG-13 and Randy Hales come out to chase him away.

[1995-09-09-USWA-TV] Interview: Jesse James Armstrong / Interview: Jerry Lawler
I laugh when Armstrong calls Dave Brown Murphy Brown for interrogating him too much. He takes over the production truck and they show various clips of him beating up Jerry Lawler and Sid Vicious. The announcers are very upset about this rather obvious video editing.

[1995-09-05-ECW-TV] Interview: Cactus Jack
Cactus talks about the King of the Death Matches tournament, and how Funk rolling around in flames was payback for branding him earlier in the year in ECW Arena. He starts talking politics, and this was probably really good, but I stopped paying attention because it was so long and ECW promos are so hard to hear because of their production values.
