  1. I did not recall the pre-match moment where Mooney turns to Hogan right as Sid starts to speak, but that was hilarious! If anyone who doesn't get it ever wants to understand the "Hogan is an asshole babyface" phenomenon, this is the perfect example. Sid has reason to feel angry at how Hogan has the promotion in his pocket and that he didn't get the title shot despite being the last man in the ring at the Rumble with the champ, and despite eliminating Hogan, the guy who *did* get the title shot. The Sid turn on Hogan is well done, but aside from the post-match physical altercation, this is almost exactly what the Hogan/Savage vs Twin Towers match was a few years earlier.
  2. Lawler is wearing a tan blazer with glittery gold trim, with a black shirt. I can only guess who he was dating at the time that dressed him for TV. That aside, this is an outstanding Lawler promo. Just pretend Jeff Jarrett doesn't exist unless they're in the ring. The Moondogs interrupt by beating them up with garbage cans, then get them in the ring and beat them up some more. Lawler and Jarrett finally make their own save and the furniture starts flying until Big Black Dog comes out and now the Moondogs have the numbers.
  3. They recap recent events in the Embry/Anthony feud. The MSC footage was shown earlier, but the second clip last week in the studio of Anthony being handcuffed tot he ring ropes while Embry whips Kimberly with a belt and strips her down is new. The next clip is of a mixed tag strap match from MSC. Finally, we wrap up with Embry talking about their upcoming Tennessee Street Fight. Hot feud.
  4. Koko does a really good serious promo hyping his rematch against Kamala. He is so, so much better in Memphis.
  5. Flair and Perfect are out to talk about SNME that night, where Flair teams with Undertaker against Hogan and Sid. Flair by the numbers.
  6. This is the first time I can remember seeing Norio Honaga. He's a really surly, slimy heel. Liger really sells his ass off here and makes this a compelling match as a result. Honaga grinding his fist into Liger's ribs and Liger screaming is pretty awesome. He keeps pulling mini-comebacks out of nowhere, but can't string anything together because Honaga has really worked him over. The failed surfboard was what I was expecting as soon as he tried it, and I was glad to see it. This is nice, basic wrestling. Honaga works over Liger's back, stomach and ribs with standard holds and moves that look great, which is a nice contrast to Liger's more exciting style. Liger squeaks out a victory, but it was a tough one. Brilliant match, maybe the best of the year at this point, and immediately one of my favorite Liger matches even. I didn't expect to like this so much. Top 20 NJ matches of the 90s contender.
  7. Steamboat keeps the pace here pretty crazy in the early stages with a really fast series of nearfalls finally culminating in a tope through the middle ropes. Austin also nails him with a great clothesline at one point. This goes to a 10-minute draw. Austin has said it, but it really is true that you can track his improvement through matches with Steamboat. Austin spent a majority of his WCW time in a program with him, either in singles or tags. Also gotta love Jim Ross's shameless self promotion, plugging his radio show, recent speaking appearance, and a 900-line plug midway through the match, acting like he may end up getting in trouble for what he said.

Yeah. I don't really know how to rank it in comparison with other stuff. It's not a great match, it's a bunch of great performances, mini-stories, etc. I like it, but it doesn't fit here for me.
  9. I remember liking Sting/Meng at the GAB. Sting and Austin had a terrific pair of matches on WCW SN -- 01/94 and 04/95. There's the Sting/Keirn match that people like, but I haven't seen. Vader/Sting at Fall Brawl '94 is weirdly booked, but is at the level of their other matches from a work point of view. I like Luger, but Sting is ahead of him.
  10. Any match that involves all NJ homegrown talent is at the very least fun. This was good. I've definitely seen better, but they kept the action moving and the opening minutes involving Hase and Fujinami were especially good.
  11. Beautiful mat clinic. The match is deserving of more commentary than that, but that's really all I can say. One of the best matches I've seen so far for sure!
  12. It's the first episode of SMW! SMW doesn't have an official backdrop yet, just a white sheet. Cornette lays out the SMW mission, talks about how WCW buried the Midnights and how corporations have destroyed wrestling in a quick, yet really good promo.
  13. Oh, this isn't over. Idol talks about how water was put in his private jet and someone was trying to go after him. He blames the Moondogs. Well, Idol sucks and that's an extra story that takes away from this feud a little, but it's not enough to make it any less awesome.
  14. A studio brawl involving the guys mentioned, with Robert Fuller getting involved. Just as wild and stiff as ever -- cringeworthy chairshots and firethrowing, SHAVING CREAM and Eddie Marlin almost getting smacked with a chair too! They try to settle things over commercial, but Austin Idol comes out with a briefcase and sort of sucks in that he isn't working as snug as everyone else, but the crowd loves him. Would have been a great match if it was an official match.
  15. Koko Ware is back! They cut to a video of Dennis Coralluzzo accusing Lawler having an illegitimate child in the Northeast. Dennis accuses Koko of being the "black sheep" of Lawler's family and says he's going to "beat the black off" of him. He then says Koko has been eating greasy fried chicken so long that he's starting to smell just like it! Good Lord! Koko sings a great retort and says he will make quick work of Kamala. Then, Lawler comes out for an interview saying he and Austin Idol going to do terrible things to the Moondogs on Monday night!
  16. JIP match from Mid South Coliseum. Embry ends up accidentally handcuffing himself, leaving himself privy to a whippin' from Dirty White Girl. Embry enters the studio furious and vows revenge. Tony Anthony and Dirty White Girl come out to laugh at him and suggest fighting right away, but Embry bails.
  17. At least in a broadway you can sit in holds for large chunks of it. He couldn't really do that here.
  18. I need to walk through these matches. Dean keeping Rey grounded any more than Psicosis in the GAB vs BATB is a myth.
  19. The 1/27 MSC match just before the finish. Lawler snaps and takes out the referee with a chair and things get out of control yet again. Richard Lee is wearing a bandage mask as a result of Lawler's fireball the week before. Jarrett hits him with a bone, then gives him a piledriver. I was just about to give credit to Richard Lee for taking such a beating, but it was an imposter. The real Richard Lee comes from behind Jarrett and chokes him with something and the Moondogs win the match. Jarrett gets stretchered out. Feud. Of. The. Year.
  20. The Moondogs make quick work of these guys then pulverize them with wooden steps, chairs and whatever else they can find. These matches are sick.

  22. Sherri is head over heels, saying she has found the man of her dreams -- Shawn Michaels. Paul Bearer saying "Shawn Michaels?" in his spooky voice was really funny and awkward. She explains that DiBiase said she can return to his side anytime she wants. Were we supposed to think DiBiase wanted to pass her around?
  23. Not much to say, but it's funny that the WWF was doing so many dark gimmicks at the same time, between this and the Undertaker.
  24. Flair gets us started by continuing to gloat about winning the title at the Royal Rumble when all of the top five contenders in the running for a Wrestlemania title shot (Hogan, Piper, Undertaker, Savage, Sid) were in the ring the night he won the belt, and he outlasted them all. We get the announcement that Hogan will be the one to challenge Flair at Wrestlemania. Sid had already stood up and is furious. They show reactions of some of the wrestlers. Savage says he wishes it could have been him, but if he couldn't get the shot, he's glad Hogan could. Sid starts screaming at reporters and does a really focused promo.
