[1993-11-13-WCW-Saturday Night] Vader & Steve Austin vs Ric Flair & Arn Anderson
A very strangely laid out match, but the action is excellent. The hot tag builds are weird, but there is also lots of stuff from these guys you don't normally see. I've talked about this match elsewhere before, so I'm being vague, as I'd rather focus on stuff that's new to me. But it's a very good match worth seeing. It's not a classic, which you might hope for a match involving these four going nearly 30 minutes, but it's very good.

[1993-11-13-SMW-TV] Dirty White Boy vs Brian Lee
Brian Lee comes out in a sling and Tammy says he won't be able to defend the title. DWB quickly hits him anyway and ends up spanking Tammy before they both start choking each other with a towel. Finally, Tammy hits DWB with a loaded purse and they are doing a number on him. Tracy Smothers is doing commentary at ringside and can't bring himself to come to DWB's defense given their history. Finally, Dirty White Girl comes out and makes a beeline for Tammy and eventually things calm down. This could have been really hokey in the wrong hands, but everyone involved really executed this in a way where it looked great.

[1993-11-13-USWA-TV] PG-13 vs Jeff Jarrett & Brian Christopher
Expiration of time! Fun match. You see lots of familiar PG-13 spots in their infancy, specifically Wolfie overly celebrating everything and then catching a quick superkick. This match is essentially wrestled like the opening 10 minutes where shine is put on the babyface for the entirety of the match, but there are quite a few good things happening in that regard.

[1993-11-13-WWF-Superstars] Interview: Jerry Lawler
Lawler does a really good, loud heel promo, which is a nice contrast to his more even keel Memphis stuff. This is a local promo for the 11/27 MSG show.

[1993-11-12-AJW-Tag League The Best] Sakie Hasegawa & Aja Kong vs Manami Toyota & Akira Hokuto
Hokuto pins the champ in a fantastic match! The whole match is wrestled like a final stretch, with lots of dramatic saves and big moves. And these four are so capable in that style that I have no problem with them doing a really good spotfest. Toyota and Hokuto were probably the two most athletic wrestlers in the world at this point (I'd even put them above Rey), and as a result, they are a tremendous team.

[1993-11-11-WAR] Genichiro Tenryu vs Ashura Hara
Really hard-hitting match. The camera angle for this handheld is really good and picks up the stiffness of the action very well. Tenryu chops Hara very, very hard, and Hara sells from underneath for most of this. He makes a few good comebacks before Tenryu barely cinches in a powerbomb to put him away. Loved this.

[1993-11-10-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXV] Ric Flair vs Vader
Last few minutes. Pretty good action, and Flair's fake title win gets an enormous pop. But the ref overturns the decision because Vader was DQd for hitting the ref. Austin runs down to attack Flair after the match, a clear sign they wanted to push this guy to the top. Hmmm, maybe Dusty was on to something with this Austin guy.

[1993-11-10-WCW-Clash of the Champions XXV] Steve Austin vs Brian Pillman
Terrific 10 minute sprint, but I wish these two could have gone 30 minutes with blood. The action is terrific and has tons of hate and fire, but it falls short of what it should have been. They should have found a way to get the U.S. title on Pillman so these two could go at it at Starrcade with more time for the match and to build to it. Or maybe even putting the belt on Austin at Havoc so he could defend against Pillman at Starrcade.

[1993-11-09-LLPW] Shinobu Kandori & Utako Hozumi vs Bull Nakano & Takako Inoue
Bring on the '94 yearbook so I can see the Nakano/Kandori chain match! This is a terrific tag. Nakano and Kandori are a bit of a poor man's Dynamite and Aja, but Nakano has so much charisma that she still comes across like a major star. Bull is obviously carrying things, but Kandori is keeping up. Takako and Hozumi seem to be there more to get the other two over as monsters, and it works well. The Kandori/Bull exchanges at times feel more like Tenryu/Hashimoto than Joshi. Kandori's cross armbreaker is incredibly over, which has to be at least partially due to the Hokuto match at Dreamslam. 14:38 feels like 3 minutes. Seriously.

[1993-11-08-WWF-Raw] Randy Savage and Crush
Savage ends up shoving Vince McMahon to the ground, who is trying to restrain him, and goes after Crush and has to be restrained. This should have had way more heat because it felt like a really hot segment, but there wasn't much crowd noise.

[1993-11-06-ACW] Terry Funk vs Sabu
I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. It's a big brawl, but there's a lot of good wrestling spots mixed in too, and I like the way they built to the chaos instead of just going to it right away. And because crazy brawling and tables was still new at this point, the ref's selling and failed attempts to maintain order really mean something. I couldn't make out who the ref was, but he did an outstanding job in this match. Sabu's missed moonsault is a tremendous spot, but Funk doing a spinning toehold after all that and then winning by inside cradle is the thing I grew to detest the most about the ECW style.

Tony Schiavone and early 90s WCW announcing
Steve Beverly of Matwatch (a now-defunct newsletter) had the ear of Jim Herd at the time. He was always telling Herd the TBS show on Saturdays would be better with only one announcer, and that Ross was the best guy for the job. So Schiavone left in anger to go to the WWF. WCW announcing in the early 90s is interesting in that when it's Ross and Schiavone paired, they seem to be in competition with each other during broadcasts. When Ross and Ventura were paired, it was obvious they couldn't stand each other. When Schiavone and Ventura were paired, they seemed to like each other, but would rather not focus on calling the match. Jim Ross in particular didn't seem to play well with others during this time and endured a healthy dose of criticism for giving himself too much face time on WCW TV (he was also a producer on most shows where he announced) and overexposing himself by hosting so many of the shows.

[1993-11-05-AAA] Eddy Guerrero & Love Machine vs El Hijo del Santo & Octagon
I always liked this match better than When Worlds Collide. I still do, but I don't consider it quite the OMGCLASSIC that I did before. It's still a great match, particularly in how it's paced. There's also some nice creativity. I like the spot where Santo and Octagon are doing the double surfboard on Eddy, and Barr runs in to pin them. The match is filled with things like that. It's probably slightly on the long side, but they keep things moving without getting repetitive and the Santo/Octagon win feels like a big moment. I know some have been down on this match lately, but I still really like it, even if I've dropped it a notch or two.

[1993-11-04-NJPW-Super Grade Tag League] Keiji Muto & Hiroshi Hase vs Shinya Hashimoto & Masa Chono
Hello lost classic. Should get a full review at some point, but this is better than all but the very best AJ tags of the year and should be talked about at that level. Hase, Muto and Chono all have extended periods of the match where it feels like hope is lost. The selling is phenomenal, and they do a great job of keeping interest in Hase/Hashimoto as a feud, distinguishing it by having some tension with the handshake at the beginning and also having Hashimoto do a number on him. Hashimoto takes a ridiculous Michaels-style bump over the top rope to the floor when he misses a spinning wheel kick. Great match!

[1993-11-02-ECW-TV] Madusa and Sensational Sherri
They show clips of an altercation between the two at John Arezzi's Weekend of Champions. Madusa does a terrible promo that makes no sense at all, and Sherri asks if she's finished yet and tells her to make her point, echoing my thoughts. Sherri wakes things up a little bit and gets in a few expletives, but this does feel like two mildly retarded women arguing about nothing in particular. But at the same time, Sherri talks about how she fucked Greg Valentine and he wasn't so bad, and Madusa asks her what she's ever carried other than men's balls in her hand. Most of what they're saying doesn't make sense, but it doesn't really matter. Total trash TV.
