After a little old fashioned Yankee bashing, Lawler announces he will counteract Vince's appearance in the corner of Savage at Mid South Coliseum with Downtown Bruno. "That's how little I think of you, Vince McMahon." Vince responds by tape. -
Savage does one of his rambling promos that says a mouthful without saying much. This Monday night, Vince will accompany Savage to Mid South Coliseum to face Lawler.

The finish of their Mid South Coliseum. We cut in just a few seconds before a ref bump and Lawler throws fire in Savage's face! Savage comes back with a chain in his tights to pin Lawler and take the Unified title. Jarrett comes in and shows the chain to the ref and the decision gets reversed, so Savage rightfully tries to take out his frustration on Jarrett. Jarrett and Lawler then doubleteam Savage. Yeah, Savage responds to FIRE with a chain, then gets doubleteamed, and he's the heel. Weird.

Well, I was expecting some awesome kicking with these two and I wasn't let down. Nice matwork too, with Yamada as the underdog working from underneath. Really has an aggressive, old school feel but still feels modern for the times. It's like a more advanced version of the Nakano/Masami match in that you have two wrestlers in their physical prime still adding lots of nice touches and building a really sound match.Kansai does a great Yokozuna-style build to being taken off her feet by Yamada's kicks. Classic match I never hear anything about, yet another great match under the belt of Kansai in 1993! (Kansai should be in the Most Outstanding Wrestler conversation for the year. At least on this yearbook, she's ahead of Hokuto.)

The lariat has been used as a finisher in the U.S. and it's been relatively accepted. JBL is the most recent example. The clothesline is a spectacular enough wrestling move that I have no problem with it. I agree with the general premise that if you protect something, you can get it over as a finisher, but that seems like a finisher you'd give someone who can't do anything else. Liger is capable of much better.

SMW is really starting to grate on me when watching in the context of the yearbook, sadly. Too many ref bumps and run-ins.

Not really. Liger should have better finishers than Johnny B. Badd. Strikes are part of all wrestling matches. You are creating a false equivalency between using a knockout finish and using punches during wrestling matches. I said multiple times that Liger using it as a transition move doesn't bother me. And yes, I'd say the same thing about the heart punch.

I had never seen Sabu do the chained down entrance until watching this yearbook, but wow, insane gimmick and I wish he'd kept that side to it. Not a good match at all, but a crazy one and I can definitely understand Sabu's appeal at the time, considering his stunts and the crazy bumps he takes.

As battle royals go, this was pretty good. They seemed to be pushing a Savage victory hard early on, but built Razor up strong in this match with him overcoming some big odds. Great heat, and really good final stretch.

Yes, the shotei. Because it's an open-handed slap. Doesn't bother me in the course of a match. Don't care for it as a finish.
Blasphemy. Liger slapping people is the greatest thing in pro-wrestling. I should watch that instead. Resulting in pinfall victories?
I don't hate it as much as Liger pinning people with slaps.
1989 Butch Reed is not what anyone argues to be his best. You may already realize that, but just making sure that you're not basing opinions on WWF or NWA stuff, but instead on Mid South and maybe a little Florida. Chi-Town Rumble wasn't the best-booked show overall, mainly because they ran the same finish twice in the undercard. But the main event booking more than made up for it. The finish was a repudiation of the Dusty era, kind of a way to signify that those days were over. The atmosphere for the show is also outstanding. But yeah, aside from Flair/Steamboat at the beginning of the year, not much else going on. Summer, after Funk came in and they moved from Techwood Drive to Center Stage and started building to Bash '89, is when things got really good.
First, we get a taped Vince promo. "There are only three guarantees in life -- death, taxes and Macho Man Randy Savage." Next, Lawler comes into the Memphis studio to respond. Lawler makes fun of Savage's long-winded, rambling promo earlier in the show. He leads to a video montage of Lawler throwing fireballs, which is pretty cool.
Savage hypes up his next match against Jerry Lawler for the "UWF" championship! This is a lot of rambling because Savage had too much time to talk. Not his best.
