I like that these tags always start with Tenryu and rival, because it's the opposite of how most tag matches work where the most anticipated pairing is not the first pairing. That said, Tenryu and Hashimoto never really get to tear into each other, and this match has a nice slow build. Things really get cooking when Fujinami and Tenryu have their second go-round, and watching Tenryu sell Fujinami's open-handed slaps is awesome. Tenryu kneeing Hash in the back of the head from the apron is awesome too. Another great match in the series, with Fujinami getting a submission out of Ishikawa. Not sure I understand that result unless Fujinami will begin playing a larger part in the feud. -
There were some nice moments in this match for sure. That said, I thought it was going to be better than it was, as there was a lot of laying around between moves. Vader and Davey Boy's Clash match I remember being much better. This wasn't bad at all, but it was missing something. Notice it took Sting coming down in the post-match for the audience to care. There wasn't a ton of heat, which is strange for an Omni show.

No. "Zero" is overstating it. "Little" is probably more accurate. His rep is affected because his matches are boring. There are plenty of guys who stay on the mat who have exciting matches. It's not a referendum on the style. It's a referendum on Dory. Most people tend to like Brisco. I think anyone that labels everyone in a style from the same era in the same way is overly simplifying the issue.

Is this view reflected by everyone? If so, what was his reputation based on? Being NWA champ for 4 years? Why does Dory suck but, for example, Backlund or Bockwinkel not? Dory is largely considered boring with no discernable charisma these days. He's also often considered someone who would just sit in a hold and not do anything to make it interesting as opposed to Bockwinkel and Backlund, who you mentioned, who even when working on the mat tried to keep things interesting. Saying he sucks is probably overstating it though.

The amount of false advertising and lying to fans on this show has to be an all-time record. Schiavone going on about how he knows Zenk is Douglas by the way he throws punches is shameless. Fairly hot closing minutes of nearfalls. Zenk always said Steamboat took off his hood on purpose so it would be known he wasn't the one doing the job.

Mr. Wrestling II was the first guy to get a significant pop, probably because he was the most recent wrestler who had big ties to Georgia and was a star in the early days of TBS. But yeah, this is one of many examples of one territory coming up with a good idea, and Vince later making it work and getting it over bigger.

I love the MARUS IS GREAT sign, and also the eye rolling that the crack WCW production team zooms in on to black fans watching Bagwell dance. Eaton was a great partner for Benoit at this stage of his career, just as Scorpio was good for Bagwell. This is a really good match, and I'm a little disappointed that it was cut off of the commercial release. Really hot opening 1-2 minutes and a nice finish with Scorpio pinning Benoit after some ridiculous move from the top that I can't even explain.

Flair and Arn are wearing Japanese robes. Rude shows up in a suit upset that he didn't know about the theme for the interview, and Fifi takes him off camera to change clothes. Rude leaves Flair with his own Fifi -- Fufu, who does a striptease as they wrap up. Wow, did Flair really need something to do by this time or what?

Eric Bischoff and his SMILING FACE are here to tell us all about Slamboree. He feigns excitement over the legends appearance, but knowing what we know about Bischoff and how he views old wrestling, he probably wanted to vomit. He runs down the Slamboree card while really distracting classical music plays. Solie does a rundown of Lou Thesz's career that is tremendous. They show clips of him against Inoki from Japan with piped in crowd noise.

Bob Armstrong does a promo from home with his ribs taped up while Steve and Scott are at his side. Bob Armstrong is a tremendous promo. Armstrong resigns as commissioner of SMW, but announces that when resigning, he will also be submitting an application to wrestle. Cornette is in stitches over this video and is wearing a radioactive yellow blazer. Cornette and Pritchard announce that Jimmy Del Ray has replaced Stan Lane in the Heavenly Bodies.

Jennifer is an attractive blond who every week will be interviewing someone different from the road. We get a ridiculous and awesome video introducing her wearing about a dozen outfits and looking in the mirror while "I'm So Excited" by The Pointer Sisters plays. She states that her goal is to show what wrestlers do in their free time.

Let's get this going again! Real life took had to take over for a few weeks, but I'm back on board! Lawler talks about the passing of Ernest Everhart, who was head of USWA security. They show some fun clips from the Jerry Lawler Show where he plays a bit part. This being Memphis, I expected an angle, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I didn't care for them either. I thought the blood was gratuitous and didn't feel needed and the matches were just average. I wasn't bored by them, but I think they were overhyped. My favorite DiBiase matches on the set were his matches against Terry Taylor and Brad Armstrong. Knowing what you like John, I suspect you'd like both matches quite a bit.

Really nice match that has all the makings of a classic ... except time. 20 more minutes and this would have been great. Even 10 more minutes would have helped. I love the matwork and Ramirez does an awe-inspiring dive to close out the first fall. But this needed way more time than 15ish minutes.

This was a war. Tremendous match. Hansen sets out to destroy Misawa's arm, which Misawa sells beautifully. Both guys are at their best. I like Hansen against Kawada and Kobashi a little more, but Hansen and Misawa is still excellent. Misawa was still establishing himself as champion, so Hansen taking it too him so much and Misawa overcoming it is the perfect type of match for the time frame.

Kawada and Taue win the tag titles in what was actually a pretty interesting, yet disappointing match. Interesting because Taue was put in the position to be the savior of the team a few times and because Kawada and Taue gelled really quickly. Disappointing because the match dragged at times and had lots of down time.

To make this thread about something more fun than Russo: I used to get annoyed that the magazines existed in their own little universe. Aside from the Flair/Savage WM build in '92, I can't really recall many times when they actually used the magazine in a storyline. Debuting a manager by having him be a snarky columnist seems like it would have been a natural angle, and possibly also increased magazine sales. The magazines captured the storylines, but I always wished the storylines also reflected the magazines.

Hercules. I'm also pretty sure the Argentinian backbreaker was used by some guys in the 70s and before. It was a cool finisher that would get over now.

I honestly think categorizing like that goes against what your initial point was. I don't think you can ever completely ignore what goes on in the ring, but it would be part of the overall package instead of the entirety.
