Dave Meltzer stuff
Ric Flair recently said on Steve Austin's podcast that Charles Barkley is able to say things in the media that he agrees with but could never say out loud. It's racism.

Pro Wrestling Matches Hall of Fame
I disagree with that. Not every match that goes in has to be a big drawing match and a great match. If it's overwhelmingly strong in one category, which Flair-Steamboat is, it should go in. The same match HOF can have room for both Flair-Steamboat and something like Hogan-Andre. It's about the whole, not the sum of the parts.

[1999-11-08-WWF-Raw] Interview: Al Snow & Mankind
Al Snow and Mankind do an interview about losing the tag titles. Snow apologizes and takes the blame, saying he's distracted by this Wal-Mart scandal that is ruining his life. Hilarious.

[1999-11-08-WCW-Nitro] David Flair: Stalker
Kimberly comes to the ring. She's tired of running and tells David Flair whatever he's going to do, he'll have to do in front of everyone. David comes to get her when Bam Bam Bigelow attacks him from behind. Then David low blows him and beats him up with the crowbar. Kimberly takes off through the crowd and David follows her. Gotta love how she's in danger of being assaulted and the cameraman just keeps on filming. Creative Control run David off and then help her out of the car. Ratings.

[1999-11-08-WCW-Nitro] Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Goldberg
Hall and Nash are in the ring surrounded by a riot squad. There's one of them staying behind who won't leave the ring so Nash wants to prank him by throwing powder in his eyes but the guy kicks the powder in Nash's face, then takes off his helmet and spears both guys.

[1999-11-08-WCW-Nitro] Pyro and Ballyhoo
Duggan cleans toilets while Kevin Nash dresses up as The Grand Wizard. Kimberly and her cameraman hide from a deranged David Flair. Sting walks to the ring. Kimberly hides behind a copy machine, but the cameraman is still in the room. Hall and The Grand Wizard apologize to Sid. Luger and Liz laugh at Duggan's mopping skills and Luger giggles while running off with the wet floor sign. Mike Tenay interviews Vampiro and The Misfits. Kimberly pleads with Creative Control to help her hide. Hall and Nash continue joking around. "The answer is 316. The number of times the Undertaker has worked a pay-per-view main event with Austin." I wonder who booked those. Liz helps Luger nurse his injured knee. Kimberly continues pacing and pretends to cry. David Flair finds her in the shower. Ratings!

[1999-11-08-WCW-Nitro] Seven debuts
Here we go. After getting an elaborate intro, Seven shows up and buries his own gimmick. He insists on being Dustin Rhodes and talks about how much Goldust sucked and nearly ruined his career. He also mentions how the Powers That Be (he said it right!) told him Dustin Rhodes is boring, but too bad, he's going to be himself. Dustin is a good talker but I hate this shooty shooty shoot shoot shoot crap. Why not just drop the vignettes if Russo didn't like the gimmick?

[1999-11-08-WCW-Nitro] Stacy Keibler and Nitro Girls contest
I like how Stacy Keibler just sort of fell into all this - auditioned for a Nitro Girl but became more of a character, then went to WWE, then ended up on Brothers and Sisters, then dated George Clooney ... and so on. AC Jazz comes out to throw everyone out of the ring, but Spice disagrees and they end up in a fight. Might have been a good idea to train them to at least do a fight before doing this segment. The other Nitro Girls come out to break them up.

[1999-11-08-BJW] Tomoaki Honma & Ryuji Yamakawa vs Shadow WX & The Winger (Death)
I liked this, but I'd like to see a Honma match where its quality isn't predicated on him taking inhumane punishment. He's not the only one in this match who does, of course. Fire, light tubes and barbed wire on a board all find their way into this. I guess that's what makes this style unique, but it's the selling that makes it good. I don't love it quite as much as the best stuff, but it's still very good.

[1999-11-07-ECW-November to Remember] Mike Awesome vs Masato Tanaka
They are really aiming to present Mike Awesome as the most athletic big man in wrestling. This is probably the worst match I've seen between these two. I'm basing that entirely on how much it grabbed me, as it's probably not measurably better or worse than any of their other matches. But it resonated with me less than some of their other matches. I don't think it was too short, but it does feel abridged. I remember their New Years Eve match on TNN being my favorite, so we'll see if that holds up.

[1999-11-06-KAW-TV] Interview: Bill Dundee
This takes place at Bill Dundee's home. The announcer is there unannounced, so Dundee steps away then comes back to do the interview after putting some clothes on. Dundee does a typically good promo on Terry Golden, and talks about how he and Lawler invented what people call the ECW style now. He's willing to wrestle or fight, whatever Golden wants to do. He admits he doesn't want to wrestle seven days a week anymore, and he doesn't have to, but he still has the same drive when he wakes up every morning.

[1999-11-06-MPPW-TV] Brian Christopher, Doug Gilbert and Tommy Rich
Brian Christopher and Spellbinder are dressed for a funeral and even have flowers. Kevin Christian mourns with them as well, which is hilarious. Brian somberly reveals that Tommy Rich and Doug Gilbert passed away and today, their lives will be honored. Spellbinder is really good, but Christopher knocks this out of the park again. He reads a Doug Gilbert bio that just has me rolling because it's so embellished. "Doug Gilbert was given the nickname 'Dangerous' when as a child, he picked up the cigarette butt that was being used to heat the Gilbert family trailer and put it in his mouth." Brian is amazing in this. Just incredible. He shoots on Doug a little, and then requests that they bring out their remains. They put Doug's in a vacuum cleaner. Oh, Brian on Rich. "BEER. He loved BEER." They play Taps and the lights go out. When they come back on, Gilbert and Rich are there and clear the ring. This segment is just phenomenal. And then ... it keeps going. Rich is first to talk. He says he's done a lot in his life but he's not ashamed of anything. Rich calls Spellbinder a guy who would only weigh 110 lbs. if he wasn't on steroids. If only that was the biggest potshot in the segment. Doug starts by doing an awesome job hyping their barbed wire match this evening. He talks about how Brian Christopher should play Doug Gilbert every week because it's his best shot of ever getting over. Doug then says if Brian wants to play the family card, he's happy to do it. He explains that the reason Brian Christopher was so successful in Memphis for so long because his dad was Jerry Lawler. Dave Brown sees where this is going and is exasperated. He's just getting started. He talks about Randy Hales smoking crack in the back right now and accuses Jerry Lawler of raping a 13-year old girl. Dave immediately cuts to commercial and this led to Lawler pulling out and Power Pro no longer being a developmental territory. Legend has it Lawler saw this at home on TV and immediately got in his car and drove to the studio. Well, that was all fun.

[1999-11-05-ECW-TNN] Pulp Fiction
Looks like Taz is putting over RVD on the way out. We see Simon Diamond and Dick Hertz (lovely name), Danny Doring and Roadkill, Sabu and Alfonso, Jerry Lynn, The Baldies, Corino-Victory-Rhino, Raven (who with Dreamer and Sandman are almost doing an ECW nostalgia act already, whether that was the intention or not) and the Impact Players.

[1999-11-04-WWF-Smackdown] Steve Austin & The Rock & Kane & Shane McMahon vs HHH & X-Pac & Road Dogg & Billy Gunn (Elimination)
Kind of an early sign of the WWF’s end to popularity when DX are presented as heels for not obeying authority. It goes against everything they promoted for the previous two years. This match was helped a lot by having X-Pac in the match since he’s such a good ring general. This comes down to Austin/Rock vs all of DX within a few minutes and has great heat. They cut a heavy pace here and Rock is FIP for the biggest part of this, squeaking out an elimination of Road Dogg while HHH taunts Austin on the apron. After Austin gets the hot tag, he goes on a tear, giving X-Pac a stunner to eliminate him. HHH gets huge heat for cutting off the People’s Elbow but Rock still pins Gunn with a roll-up. It comes down to Austin/Rock vs HHH, but Rock is quickly eliminated when Billy Gunn refuses to leave the ring and attacks Rock, helping HHH get the win. Finally, it’s Austin and HHH. Vince tosses a chair into the ring which HHH intercepts, then grabs the belt and goes to clock HHH but hits Austin by accident, giving HHH the pin. HHH was put over incredibly strong here, but that’s what needed to happen at this point. Interesting how the wrestling got so much better almost immediately when Russo left.

[1999-11-04-WWF-Smackdown] DX and Vince McMahon
DX gloats about how loved they are. X-Pac's Tommy Hilfiger overalls are remarkably douchey. They are definitely over as babyfaces with this crowd until they start dissing The Rock. We see clips of Vince accidentally (Or was it?) hitting Shane with the belt when he was aiming for HHH. HHH tries to mock Jim Ross's accent and it somehow comes out as a British Southerner. They introduce their newest member - Vince McMahon. Vince laughs that off by saying he'd rather to go to WCW than join DX. Vince makes the elimination tag main event for the evening: DX vs Austin/Rock/Shane/Kane. Good stuff.

[1999-11-04-WWF-Smackdown] Mankind & Al Snow vs Hardcore & Crash Holly
Of course, Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler sound off on the Al Snow action figure being pulled from Wal-Mart shelves. We understand Vince a little better now than we did then, so I'd bet that Vince's frustration with the media is a big part of why Snow got his push around this time. Fun match. The wrestling is slowly getting better without Russo around, interestingly enough. Snow and Mankind win the tag titles. The Hollys fight with each other after the match, which was always fun. Post-match has a funny locker room celebration with the babyfaces pouring milk on Snow. Mankind asks to leave because he has some business to take care of and goes on the hunt for Val Venis. he ends up at a strip club and keeps opening peep show booths looking for Val. Funny stuff. "Kay Parker movie! She's still around?" Mankind finally makes it outside only to find his car being towed. He's stranded at the strip club. Back at the arena, Snow is still going on and on about how great his victory was. Val Venis takes the opportunity to attack him from behind. So Val made Mick think he left the building when he didn't.

[1999-11-04-WWF-Smackdown] DX watches RAW
Weirdly edited segment of DX watching RAW and cracking jokes on it. They end up realizing the show was recorded over animals doing it on the Discovery Channel before going back to the clips. Not really sure the point of this unless they just needed to fill time.
