[1999-10-08-ECW-TNN] Interview: Tammy Sytch
A pretty infamous interview with Tammy Sytch which is narrated by Paul Heyman, showing clips of her in SMW and the WWF. She talks about her addiction to muscle relaxers and even says that it was pretty widespread among those in wrestling. She starts crying talking about Louie Spicolli's death. She also talks about how she was considered old by 1997 even though she was only 24 years old. She also opens up about her childhood and being suicidal, and this is a little too real for wrestling. We also know watching in 2014 that this story doesn't have a happy ending.

[1999-10-07-WWF-Smackdown] Jeff Jarrett and Chyna
There's a ring set up for mud wrestling. Jarrett brings out Ivory and Miss Kitty, and then doublecrosses Ivory by throwing her in the mud when she isn't paying attention. They have their mudwrestling match and Ivory wins after taking off Miss Kitty's top. Then Jarrett throws Mae Young and Moolah in the mud. Chyna finally comes out to make the save and she tosses Jeff in the mud behind his back. Quite the Smackdown. No wonder they got themselves in some trouble.

[1999-10-04-WWF-Raw] The Rock vs Chris Jericho
Infamous match Jericho writes about in his book where he keeps having the worst luck possible, including picking up a drink from a ringside fan to throw in Rock’s face only to discover that it was chewing tobacco. Rock gets the win. This was the first show after Russo left and Russo booked Jericho to win when writing the show on the way out, but Vince changed the finish and this is when the real problems for Jericho in the WWF began. I think this is worth including in full for a few reasons: it’s the first match ever between the two, it pays off Jericho’s debut verbal sparring with Rock and it is a good representation of Jericho’s political problems at the time. I watched this thinking about what he wrote in his book and he described the problems with how he worked this match perfectly.

[1999-10-04-WWF-Raw] Mankind, The Rock and Chris Jericho
Mankind wants The Rock out, and Rock is so massively over. They start teasing another drawn out This Is Your Life segment, and it's not their best segment. Mankind wants to break up the Rock & Sock Connection ... and he even lost The Rock's jacket! Now Mankind is saying he made a decision to recommit his career to their tag team. After just saying he wanted them to break up? "Are you implying to The Rock that you are asking for his hand in marriage?" and I have no idea what they are babbling about. The "comme ci comme ca" catchphrase Rock used briefly gets rolled out for the first time. Jericho mercifully interrupts them to save them from themselves. He tells Rock he would be perfect as the woman in a male-male relationship and should accept the proposal from Mankind and then lists all the reasons he suspects The Rock is gay. A fan dressed like Jericho hits the ring and tries to attack the Rock & Sock Connection and Jericho just stands there not saying anything and I'm betting Vince was yelling at him in the back to say something to fill the dead space. Then we get the best exchange of the segment. Rock: "You think you impress The Rock? Why, because a couple of months ago, you were down South beating some jabroni named Juventud?" Jericho: "I took off his mask!" I also love that the announcers pretend to have no idea what a Juventud is. Anyway, they finally get to the point and make the main event of Rock vs Jericho for the first time. The segment got much better when Jericho came out.

[1999-10-04-WWF-Raw] HHH and Jim Ross
HHH with another new look! HHH looks down at the ground the whole time and talks with an odd inflection in his voice. He was definitely still finding himself. HHH wants Ross to come in the ring and Jim Ross actually has a memory for a change and refuses to do it. Ross eventually comes to the ring because he knows he doesn't have a choice. HHH points to an interview Ross did with Austin the previous Friday where he reveals that he will be at No Mercy even though he hasn't been medically cleared. HHH asks Ross what Austin thinks of him and Ross doesn't want to say. Finally, Ross is able to say that Austin thinks HHH is an asshole, which gets a HUGE pop and starts a massive "asshole!" chant. Then HHH turns the tables and wants to know what Jim Ross thinks of him. Ross calls him a sorry, low down SOB. HHH responds to that by clotheslining Ross out of his chair and then laying in some stiff looking kicks. Refs come in to pull HHH off of him. While I do wish they'd stop using Jim Ross physically in angles to get over the top heel, this was a great angle and segment.

[1999-10-04-WCW-Nitro] Bret Hart vs Chris Benoit
So much to say about this. I don't think this match is more than very good, but I dug the artistic statement they were trying to make here - Owen died because the beautiful simplicity of wrestling had died. So in this match, they were going to pay tribute to Owen, but they were also paying tribute to the art of the wrestling match in general. 1999 was a year where wrestling was more popular than it had ever been in the U.S., but it had become something very different. It's not often that you watch a match this good that feels somber, but this does. I think in a way it also adds to this that the crowd doesn't get all that hot for it - not necessarily as a match, but as a viewing experience. I had hoped the WWE DVD version of this was from the Nitro Backstage Blast, and I was sure someone told me it was, but commercials appear to have still been edited out. Is the uncut version of this online somewhere? I know it exists.

[1999-10-04-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Scott Hall & Kevin Nash
Hall and Nash, neither of whom are part of WCW at this point in storyline, walk through the crowd with drinks in their hands and the crowd roars. Bobby Heenan wants the scoop so he leaves the broadcast booth to go find out what's going on. Everyone being so happy to see them ... I won't beat that horse again. They seem drunk. It says a lot when Bobby Heenan is the most coherent guy in a segment. Hall says they'll come back when it's fun again and this closes with Nash saying they are getting the band back together.

[1999-10-02-WWF-Rebellion] Davey Boy Smith and Vince McMahon
Davey Boy barges into the McMahons' office and wants to know where his title shot has gone. He gets angry and throws a trash can and ends up accidentally KOing Stephanie, who is standing on the other side of the room. She is carted out on a stretcher and this was the beginning of some dumb amnesia angle if I recall correctly.

[1999-10-02-MPPW-TV] Randy Hales, Brian Christopher and Doug Gilbert
Brian Christopher has a suspicious additional 20 lbs or so of muscle. He shows up in the studio with a baseball bat. There's a box in the studio and because it's Memphis, Brian just knows there's someone inside and takes a bat to the box before the big reveal. But it's actually just a tape recorder with a Doug Gilbert promo on it telling Brian to find him in the parking lot. So he goes out there and Doug has taken his car. Brian runs back into the ring and takes out his frustrations on Randy Hales. Doug comes back (??) and makes the save, taking Brian's bat from him and chasing him off. This really good segment wraps up with a strong Doug Gilbert promo saying that Brian Christopher is no longer protected since he's in a company not owned by Jerry Jarrett or his daddy. He also promises to target Christopher's former torn ACL. Poor Doug - a good worker and talker, but he has a horrible look and for that reason, he never had a chance of being anything but a regional star. Brian comes back out after Doug leaves to do a strong pissed off promo. Excellent stuff.

[1999-09-27-WWF-Raw] HHH vs The Rock
Austin does commentary. Another fun, fast-paced Crockett-style TV main event. HHH attacks the ref, then hits Rock with a chair. HHH calls out Austin, who gets in the ring. Rock revives just as HHH eats a stunner and gives him a Rock bottom immediately after. The ref is slowly reviving and we get the most dramatic sllooooowwww two-count of all time before Davey Boy hits the ring and attacks Rock. He also goes after HHH and gives him a running powerslam. Pushing Davey Boy at this stage was obviously ill-advised.

[1999-09-27-WWF-Raw] This Is Your Life
Here we go - the segment which had approximately 850 billion viewers and is the most watched thing in the history of the world. Mankind needs to make it up to Rock that he went after him in the six-pack challenge the night before. The Rock says no apology is needed since it was every man for himself but Mankind has something big planned - This Is Your Life, Rock! Balloons fall from the ceiling. A bevy of people from Rock's past make appearances, including Mrs. Griffith, who wouldn't let him make pancakes; The Rock's football coach, who made him run sprints; and his first girlfriend (who hilariously comes out to The Narcissist's old theme music!), who cut The Rock off when he tried to get to second base. Rock utters the phrase "poontang pie" for the first time, which makes Lawler hysterical. Next, we get to the presents. Mick Foley has had airbrushed Rock & Sock Connection jackets made for them, which are marvelously dated. He also presents The Rock with Mr. Rocko. He tries doing some sock puppeting for The Rock, but Rock isn't impressed. Finally, Mick brings in Yurple The Clown. She puts an "IYQ" sticker on The Rock's shirt, which cracks me up. This is when Mankind stands up for himself and thinks Rock needs to learn to be grateful. Yurple then leads everyone in the building in singing "Happy Birthday", which is a great scene. "The Rock's birthday is May 2, you stupid son of a bitch." "I know that, Rock. It's just that every day I get to spend a little bit of time with you feels like somebody's birthday." Then, ultimate party pooper HHH hits the ring with his sledgehammer to put an end to all the fun. I never want to see an attempt to copy this, but what the hell? As a one time thing with the right people involved, it was tremendous.

[1999-09-27-WCW-Nitro] Billy Kidman vs Psicosis (Hair vs Mask)
Last few minutes. Not much heat considering the stakes. Juventud and Chavo are both at ringside running interference for Psicosis. Juventud's outfit is awesomely heel and he's a great second. Kidman wins the match and Psicosis has to unmask, which seems pointless considering they had no plans to do anything with him. The Filthy Animals make the save and I do like that there's some undercard structure, but I don't like the unmasking.
