  1. Last few minutes. Nakanishi submits Muto to the torture rack in an interesting attempt to create a new star, winning the G-1 in the process.
  2. I think there are very few people in wrestling talented enough to make scripted material sound organic, so the whole concept is forcing many wrestlers who are naturally charismatic or relatable people to work against their strengths. The more accurate description of WWE Creative is that writers don't write to get wrestlers over. Instead, writers write to get the value of writers over. With the difference in resources, promos winged in the moment from companies running on a shoestring budget 30-35 years ago should not be better than promos today. Yet they are. Why? It's entrenched in WWE, but in theory, Creative should be something that helps wrestlers get over the hump, not something they have to overcome in order to reach the top.

  4. I think more than what happened with Foley, Mae Young getting seriously hurt in 1999-2000 when taking some of those wild bumps could have really done them in.
  5. From nearly the beginning until nearly the end, a surefire way to pop a WCW crowd was to reverse a move into a tombstone piledriver. The move may have gotten the same reaction if used in dramatic finishing stretches in the WWF, but because it was reserved for the Undertaker, we'll never know for sure. But the tombstone reversal sequences are a WCW constant.

Most wrestling is graded on a curve. Wrestling is contextual, and most good wrestling finds a way to at least partially differentiate itself from what surrounds it. That's what makes it good.
  7. Worse than the scripted promos is the other guy being obligated to stand there silent while the other guy finishes his long-winded point. That's not how conversations between people who have a beef typically go. Dusty tried to do something more natural with Stephanie last year and got heat for it. Wrestlers need to be more active in the scripting process and overrule things they don't like. I get the feeling most guys in WWE are far too afraid for their jobs to take any chances or speak up when presented with something they know isn't any good. After reading Jericho's books, WWE doesn't seem like a place to fire people for making suggestions to improve their promos.

  9. Last few minutes. About as good as you'd think. Hogan Hulks up after a Jackknife powerbomb and looks pretty old in there. He gets the win and Nash "retires" for a few months. Hey, it got him off of the booking committee.

  11. This match is pretty awful. I don't see the good that has been talked about in this one at all. They end up brawling away from the ring and Savage throws Rodman in a port-o-potty and tips it over in the "highlight" of the match. Savage tried at this point, but he just had nothing at all in the tank anymore.
  12. Last few minutes. Not particularly inspiring action, but this is notable for Sting doing a clean job, which was a rarity for him.
  13. Last few minutes. The Sturgis crowd is even more disinterested than usual. Thank God this was the last of these. The recently-reunited Harlem Heat regain the tag titles. Booker should be way above this by this point.
  14. Taz shows no remorse for what he did to Tajiri at Heat Wave. This is one of Taz's better promos, as he describes in detail the pain he inflicted with the Tazmission.
  15. Bagwell was like a poor man's Jeff Jarrett, who was already pretty poor. The problem wasn't the ringwork, it was the grating personality where he was so obviously pandering and begging for a crowd reaction.
  16. Chris Candido will be on the next Louisville Gardens show. Tammy shows up too and she's obviously not herself.
  17. Wolfie D calls into the studio and claims that they were stranded on their way to the studio. Water was put in their oil, and now their car won't run. Wolfie cuts a hell of a promo, but considering what the standards were for stars at the time, top babyfaces having transportation problems as late as 1999 seems passe and just reinforces PPW as minor league. They show clips of a six-man elimination cage match from a house show, which comes down to Wolfie D vs Mic Tierney. Action looks really good, and Wolfie D had a lot to offer any company that would hire him at this point.
  18. Steve Bradley comes out with Cornette in his corner. Bradley looks like at least a good a prospect as Angle at this point based on his camera presence and persona. Cornette claims that Bradley has the potential to outshine Shawn Michaels and The Rock. He claims Randy Hales has been holding him down because he's not from the South, and wants Hales to come out and face him. Cornette is wanting to use the PPW title for leverage to get ownership of PPW but Hales isn't biting, and reminds Cornette and Bradley that they are outnumbered. Hales orders a rematch between Bradley and Angle on today's show with the title on the line. Amazing little pipsqueak Kevin Christian comes out and says as the matchmaker, he did not approve of this match. Hales claims as the owner, founder and President of the company, he has veto power over everything - the match will happen. Good stuff.
  19. Highlights of a house show match where Jim Cornette interferes and hits Angle with a tennis racket. He's chased off by Brandon Baxter but the damage was done, as Bradley pins Angle to win the PPW title.
  20. This was a methodical, hard-hitting match with great struggle to apply holds and some really stiff shots. I think it’s the best match of the G1. It’s not as exciting as Muto-Nagata got at times, but I think it’s the better match of the two. Chono does some good heel work once he takes over. They did a nice job selling the impact of the match with a lot of drawn out selling between moves at the end. I can see why Dave went higher on Muto-Nagata based on TV JIP stuff though, as this didn’t build to quite as exciting a conclusion. But watched in full, it’s definitely the better match, with a semi-surprising finish to boot!
  21. I really liked this match. Lots of cool matwork from Nagata and we got the best of Muto in this one. Nagata keeps going back to his leglock thing and Muto puts it over great. As good as Nagata is in this, I really think it was Muto’s charisma and facial expressions that took this to the next level. This works much better as a Nagata showcase setting up the coming decade than the Kojima match did. There are things that can be picked apart about this for sure, specifically the out of nowhere finish that just didn’t jive with the body of the match, but in spite of that, this was very good.
  22. Hashimoto did a really great job putting over Tenzan here in a very satisfying match with his great selling of Tenzan’s knee attack and a really strong comeback that got the people in the building excited. While Hashimoto won, he was wounded and gave Tenzan a chance to shine. Really good.
  23. The Rock is issuing a challenge to the Big Show when the Countdown To The Millenium pops up on the Titantron and hits zero. Chris Jericho debuts in the WWF to a huge pop! Pretty classic moment. Apparently, a lot of things he said in this promo hit a little close to home when insulting the entire WWF roster, so while the segment was a major success, it would be a bumpy road ahead.
  24. Footage of Billy Gunn getting a massage. Special herbs are applied to his ass, which in a high-larious payoff gives him a major case of the itches later in the night.
  25. Talk about it here.
