[1999-06-07-WCW-Nitro] Kevin Nash, Randy Savage and The Hummer
Savage's ladies are in the limo and ask Nash to open a bottle of champagne for them and they want to have a little fun without Nash around. Savage is driving the limo and then a hummer runs over the limo with Savage inside. Ugh, this. I forgot just how low WCW sank in the summer of 1999. And way to make Nash look stupid falling for that.

[1999-06-07-WCW-Nitro] Roddy Piper and Buff Bagwell
Now we have the famous and also horrible old vs young feud WCW tried to do in 1999 and they picked Bagwell to build around. Piper asked how many times Bagwell has fought at Madison Square Garden, and Bagwell says "I wasn't born yet", so I guess Bagwell wasn't alive in the 1980s. Pretty flat, although Piper tried for once.

[1999-06-07-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage and Kevin Nash
Nash is in the ring waiting for Savage. He claims he just got here, and he has his gear with him in his bag. Savage has his trusty bucket and his valets. Nash wants to know why he only brought one bag to the ring and Savage brought three. Nash tells Savage he'll take him on if he puts down the bucket and gets down on his knees and begs Nash to fight him. Savage finally does it, then the bag starts moving. A contortionist comes out and dumps the sewage on Savage. Bischoff is such a fucking phony with his terrible laughing and I want to punch him in the face. This is what has become of WCW.

[1999-06-05-MPPW-TV] Kurt Angle vs J.R. Smooth
I have no idea who this announcer is, but he's a big step down from Dave and Cory. Angle is still green but both guys are working hard. I wish they would have gotten more time. Vic Tierney runs in for the DQ when Angle is about to get the win. Smooth attacks Angle with a chair after the match.

[1999-06-04-AJPW-Super Power Series] Mitsuharu Misawa & Akira Taue vs Kenta Kobashi & Toshiaki Kawada
The bizarro world tag. The action was good, just as you'd expect, but I don't think they did enough to get over the oddness of the matchmaking. I know Misawa and Kobashi are big rivals by this point, but seeing them go right into the action like this is just another match bugged me. So technically good, but no sense of this being anything special, which it should have been. It is still one of the top matches of the year just because Misawa and Kobashi go after each other so aggressively. And I love Taue proving himself to be a reliable partner, true to his tradition with Jumbo and Kawada, even while eating the fall in the end. I could rattle off flaws, but that's only because these guys set such a high standard for themselves. So when they don't blow me away, it seems like a disappointment, even if we're getting a great match in the process. Kawada is still good in the ring but I think Kobashi has surpassed him in the pecking order by this point.

[1999-06-03-WCW-Thunder] Ric Flair vs Chris Benoit
I think this is just about the best match Flair is capable of having at this stage of his career. Flair pulls out lots of tricks he hasn't done in a long time since it's been a while since he's had the chance to go long with the type of great worker he would have faced in years past. It was a little sad to see him call the bridge up spot and for Benoit to be able to do it but Flair having trouble. But aside from that, this is a pretty good match. It looks dated in 1999, but I'll take dated over what we were getting from Ric most of the time in the ring at this point.

[1999-06-03-NJPW-Best of the Super Juniors] El Samurai vs Shinjiro Otani
This is a lost classic almost on par with their legendary January ’96 match, and it’s worked in a similar style. I think in some ways it might be better just because Otani is wrestling like someone more sure of himself at this point. The matwork immediately seems so gripping and high-stakes, with dramatic submission attempts and amazing selling right away. This is not at all filler, this is meaningful and consequential wrestling right out of the gate. Samurai shows his goods on the mat, where he’s always been very good, but this is really the Otani show. His selling and offense are as good as anything you’re likely to see anywhere. This is similar to the Yoshida matches in that they are doing all this tricked out mat stuff, but sprinkling in a few high-impact moves for the sake of drama. The selling is great on a micro level, but the big picture selling where both guys are selling the fatigue is what puts this over the top. We might end up looking at this as the last great singles match from the New Japan juniors of this generation.

[1999-05-31-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin vs The Undertaker
These two didn’t always mesh, I think because when you have asskicker versus asskicker, who sells? Still, I think this is one of their better outings. Solid match - no real depth to it or anything, but they cut a hard pace and everything looked great. The Corporate Ministry run in for the DQ at the end. Then they tie him up and Undertaker summons the Greater Power, who makes an elaborate entrance and gives Austin a peak at his face. The crowd is so hot for this and it’s a notable rivalry for the era, so while I don’t think this is a great match, I do think it’s worth checking out. This is the WWF doing what they do at their very best.

[1999-05-31-WWF-Raw] Mankind promo
Mankind wants HHH in the ring tonight in a No DQ, falls count anywhere match. He hates to bring this up, but word in the dressing room is that Chyna has been checking him out. He tells a funny story of Chyna accidentally seeing him nude in the shower and wanting to touch him in an impure way. But he wants her to know he's a happily married man. We get footage of him being carted out in an ambulance, which was to write him out since he needed knee surgery.

[1999-05-31-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage and Kevin Nash
Savage and friends are leaving the building in their limo when Nash pulls up in a sewage truck and blocks them in before filling their limo with raw sewage while they can't get out. This is Nash trying to get himself over as the Steve Austin of WCW and it's pretty bad. We should at least be able to hear the crowd and the announcers should be calling this. Then we get a spot from Nash advertising Louis Septic Services, for all of your savage septic needs.

[1999-05-31-WCW-Nitro] Randy Savage vs 'Kevin Nash'
Bischoff tries to point out that the Nitro Girls do a number during commercial breaks, which makes it fun to attend WCW shows live. Heenan adds on, "Yeah, the commercials are more fun than the matches!" Poor Bobby, so hopeless at this point. We don't get Kevin Nash - instead, we get a job guy with long hair in a Wolfpac shirt and a dress with high heels. The women run in and do all the work while Savage distracts the ref. Then Savage teases a powerbomb before doing his own bodyslam and big elbow. Terrible, terrible segment.

[1999-05-31-WCW-Nitro] West Texas Rednecks, Konnan and Rey Misterio Jr
Curt Hennig is back at the broadcast booth. DJ Ran took exception to Curt saying he didn't like rap, so he seeks him out and plans to sing him a country song. He recruits Bobby Duncum Jr. to help him approach the booth and make his point. Hennig puts on his cowboy hat and sings a little country in tandem with Duncum. Konnan and Rey interrupt and things get heated quickly. This was a fun feud, but there's also a racial undercurrent to all of this that bugs me.

[1999-05-30-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Steve Austin vs The Undertaker Recap / Steve Austin and The Undertaker
Recap of the Austin-Undertaker match from Over The Edge including stills. We opted not to include anything from this show, but stills from Heat are fine. Undertaker wins the title after Shane fast-counts Austin. Austin comes out and calls Undertaker and Shane sorry sons of bitches. Austin wants Undertaker in the ring on RAW and calls him a chickenshit, which gets bleeped. Undertaker interrupts via Titantron. I just love 'Taker's music at this time. Undertaker continues to hype the Greater Power. He promises to present Austin to the GP tomorrow night. Austin is awesome in his response.
