  1. Lawler and Dundee are out, Lawler holding both belts. Lawler presents Dundee with the other tag belt but they aren't getting along too well.
  2. Last few minutes. The Dudleys win the tag titles after interference from the Impact Players. This was a singles match for the tag titles, I guess. The Duds then turn around and forfeit the titles to Storm and Credible since the Impact Players bought them off. But the Dudleys doublecross them and don't follow through.
  3. Did anyone have a WCW Mastercard? I should have run up my college credit card debt there instead of where I did.
  4. Rock does the Austin eulogy, which has funny moments, then reveals that he never threw the Smoking Skull belt over the bridge. He's wearing it. Austin shows up in a 3:16 monster truck, then switches to Rock's car. I hate this crap - wrestlers are not trained stuntmen and shouldn't be driving cars in angles. Anyway, Austin ends up running over Rock's car with the monster truck. Then he drives into the arena on the monster truck and also runs over the hearse. Then Austin runs to the ring and they start brawling. It's Rock and Austin, so they can make anything work, but I wasn't a fan of this at all. Enough of Austin driving things already. He hits Rock with the Smoking Skull belt on top of the burial plot then pours beer all over Rock. So he gets the belt back the week before instead of at the pay-per-view? Well, no. Shane attacks Austin from behind with a shovel and takes off with the belt.
  5. Vince is here to respond to the previous week when Shane slapped Vince in front of everyone. He has Stephanie beside him. This is another sit-down interview in the back with Stephanie by his side. Stephanie sounds so different. Vince talks about how he has always been proud of Shane and regrets that he couldn't be there for him more growing up. Stephanie feels like she doesn't know Shane anymore, which makes everything confusing because now she feels like she doesn't know anyone anymore ... except for her father. Mid-interview, security shows up to tell Vince Undertaker is here. He demands security stay with Stephanie and Vince takes off running to the parking lot so he can go after Undertaker in the parking lot. Vince starts beating the crap out of Mideon and is about to run him over, but Mideon moves, then tosses him out of the car and drives off. Vince is awesome.
  6. The Rock drives to the ring in a hearse and announces that he will be holding a funeral for Stone Cold tonight. They have a plot where Rock can bury him and Rock stands on top of it cutting the promo. We get more short spots throughout the night of Rock preparing for the funeral.
  7. Very good match. It doesn’t touch Havoc, but no one expects that. Goldberg is good in the mat stuff because he has explosive mat highspots he can pull out that get a huge spot, even if he’s not much of a mat worker overall. Kudos to Page for realizing that and grounding him. The “Goldberg” chants here are out of control. Page’s spear dare was awesome, daring him, then tricking him, then moving. Goldberg powers out of a pin attempt after a Diamond Cutter and then Goldberg goes for a spear so Page pulls the ref in front of him and pulls out a pair of brass knuckles, cementing his heel turn. With the ref out, he decides to smash his leg up with a chair on the ring steps. Another ref comes out to stop him and ends up taking a great guardrail bump! Page then locks in a ringpost figure four and Nash makes the save, cementing HIS babyface turn. He and Goldberg look like they are about to make out until DDP lays Nash out with the title belt. Weird ending aside, everything about this worked really well.
  8. Last few minutes. I recall this match and Flair's match against Sting the previous week doing the most competitive quarter hours WCW had done in a long time. Charles Robinson refuses to count Flair down after Nash powerbombs him. Gorgeous George (Savage's valet) ends up attacking Robinson from behind, then puts on the ref's shirt to come in the ring and count the fall. Is that how it works? Immediately after the match, a group of guys in white coats come to the ring to put Flair on a hospital bed and cart him out of the building while Piper taunts him. And Flair is hauled off to a mental institution.
  9. Flair is an absolute riot in this. He says every time he's in town, Gator fans want him to go across the street to the bar because they think they can outdrink him. But he's ready to buy the entire town of Gainesville a round of drinks if they want to take him on when Roddy Piper returns. He's being booed loudly and gets drowned out every time he tries to talk. Seriously, WCW, stop using this guy. Piper's role is to tell Flair he's lost it and try to intervene. Piper cites Flair stripping to his underwear and throwing his shoes in the audience as proof he's not fit for office, so Flair strips down again and asks him if he has a problem with it. This time, Flair strips down and he has Gator boxers on. So many funny moments here. Charles Robinson tries to put a robe on Flair and can't do it. Anyway, Piper reveals that he has paperwork to show that Flair has been deemed incompetent and he's being removed from the WCW Presidency. Flair says no way and responds by firing Piper, and then says he's giving Florida back the National title from Tennessee. Crowd LOVES that one. Piper points out that he also signed a match against Kevin Nash that night and Flair says he'll kick his ass from there to Knoxville. Arn faints in the corner. Flair says Piper is fired but he is facing him at Slamboree in a funny, nonsensical announcement. Such a tremendously entertaining segment, even if Flair is not being used in the way he should be at all.
  10. My personal pick for best Nitro match ever and something that will for sure make my 500 matches in the e-book. This is worked kind of as a Rey/Blitz vs Juvi/Psi tag at times and then it will shift to a four-way. Incredible collection of highspots, but more than that, they paused at the right times so everything could sink in and did a heck of a job working the crowd and laying out the match to give everything meaning. The crowd is very into Rey which helps them a lot, as this is unusually long for TV. I lost my mind over this match at the time it aired and was convinced it was the greatest thing I'd ever seen. Psicosis wins the cruiserweight title in a major shocker. Absolutely awesome.
  11. Last few minutes. Midget D tries to interfere to help JC out, but Hollywood comes in and attacks Midget D for his efforts. Tommy Rogers (!!!) makes a run-in and helps attack Danny B. The wrestling scene in 1999 Memphis is incredibly bizarre. Two rival companies - one with Michael Hayes and Mae Young among the top stars, and the other with Jamie Dundee and Tommy Rogers.
  12. This started off hot and stayed that way. Benoit and Malenko rushed Rey and Kidman at the bell then got hit with stereo dropkicks and planchas to the floor before Kidman settled into the FIP role. Benoit and Malenko are excellent in-ring heels - they should have teamed for their entire WCW run. Plus, Arn as a ringside second and is GREAT once again! Benoit/Malenko making the tag titles the most important belts in the company and building around Benoit/Malenko/Arn would have been my direction if I was WCW booker. Kidman really times his comeback teases so well, catching quick pin attempts out of nowhere. Malenko makes the fatal mistake of attempting to powerbomb Kidman, and of course that’s enough to get a hot tag to Rey. I even love the DQ finish of Arn running in and beating up Rey and Kidman with his tire iron. Raven and Saturn come out and we get a big brawl involving all three teams. I LOVED this feud. I’d be surprised if this wasn’t the hottest WCW Saturday Night match of 1999. This was fantastic.
  13. Derrick King and Kid Wikkid! They seem to be having problems before the match, *and* Lawler has to wrestle this handicapped since Dundee has not yet arrived. Lawler asks the champs if he can pick another partner, and they respond Dundee or nobody. Lawler ends up tying Kid Wikkid in the ropes to even the odds. Lawler wins the tag titles by himself.
  14. Clip of Stacy getting a spanking at the Jonesboro show. Back at the studio, Stan Lane calls in to cut a promo hyping a Lawler/Dundee-Fabs cage match. Then we cut to a taped promo from Stacy basically threatening to get naked to distract Lawler and Dundee at match time. Then Lawler does an interview back in the studio. Lawler is interviewed in the ring, which is something different. Lawler and Dundee as the tag team that bickers constantly is amusing. This time, Dundee hasn't arrived yet because of transportation problems and Lawler has a few words for him over that.
  15. Hayes has a few words for Glen Kulka and is now the Power Pro champion.
  16. This was a very good Carnival final. While Vader's matches continue to be technically good, it still also seems like they're leaving a lot on the table in terms of Vader spots. He wrestles pretty even with Kobashi. This was their best match yet but the size dynamic isn't playing enough of a role for my tastes, nor are we getting to see Vader do a lot of the bumping or striking that is his calling card. They do a lot right so I don't want to complain about the match too much. I just think they had an even better one in them somewhere that never quite came out.
  17. Charles Robinson is pouring water for Flair and Arn. Flair signs a bunch of papers without looking at them, which has never presented any problems for anyone in wrestling. Arn looks on puzzled and seems concerned that Ric is just signing everything without reading it. Arn: Did you read it? Flair: Why should I read it? I'm the President of the United States!
  18. Last few minutes of the blowoff of this feud, and DDP's first title defense. Roddy Piper does color commentary. After a ref bump, Steiner uses wire cutters to expose the top turnbuckle and send DDP into it back-first a few times. DDP makes a comeback with a jumping DDT and a series of headbutts to Scott's groin. Then Kimberly pelts Steiner with a chair, DDP gives the Diamond Cutter and wins the match to put all of this behind him.
  19. Hey, let's run a video hyping Bret Hart, who is no longer with WCW in storyline and quit. So the producers make a nice video for a fired guy. They showed they knew how to do this thing and make it make sense a few years earlier - paid spots.
  20. Another one of these WCW videos that feels like production guys just playing around with equipment and going overboard with it.
  21. The new look for Nitro, which Eric Bischoff predicted would get them a 7.0 rating.
  22. Shane McMahon will be the guest referee for Austin-Rock at Backlash. Austin wants Rock to return the Smoking Skull belt back or there will be hell to pay. Rock interrupts via Titantron and tells Rock to meet him on the Roody Poo Bridge. Rock gets a 3:16 page yet again and we get a series of vignettes throughout the night with Rock waiting on Austin to show up. Austin finally finds Rock and they end up brawling on a bridge. Rock throws Austin off the bridge and then throws the Smoking Skull belt into the water too. So awful.
  23. Another Mankind commercial for Chef Boyardee.
  24. Last few minutes. The Godfather wins the IC title in what was considered the turning point for the belt for a lot of people. There was little heat for the match because Godfather was all entrance and post-match. I actually think he was a perfectly good opening match guy just because he could pop the crowd without being an act that was impossible to follow, but this was too high on the card for him.
