[1999-03-19-FMW] Hayabusa & Jinsei Shinzaki vs Masato Tanaka & Tetsuhiro Kuroda
Pretty ground-based tag with Tanaka and Kuroda working over Hayabusa's knee at first. This has the type of slow build I love, escalating from a mat encounter to a bombfest. I like seeing Masato Tanaka in matches like this because it shows he was better than we got from him a lot of the time. This was a total All Japan-style midcard match, and is just a shade better than the Honda-Izumida match from me in January, probably because these guys were so comfortable working each other and had done it so many times. Lots of great double-team moves from both guys near the end. I marked out for Hayabusa busting out a shotei. Both teams should probably have threads in the GWE Tag Teams folder if someone wants to nominate them. Yet another MOTYC in what has been a super year for wrestling.

[1999-03-17-NJPW-Hyper Battle] Jushin Liger vs Koji Kanemoto
What we have of this is absolutely great and it’s a decent amount of footage too. Plus, it’s Kanemoto finally defeating Liger to win the title. But the match is actually 31:38! I'd kill to see this in full because it looks to be their best match yet. Depressing that the whole thing has never aired.

[1999-03-15-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair & Goldberg vs Hulk Hogan & Kevin Nash
Flair moves around like a guy half his age the way he’s taking bumps in there at the beginning. The Hogan/Goldberg no-sell Clash of the Titans stuff is tremendous. Even Nash works hard. Flair stays on the apron longer than you’d think, but Flair and Goldberg are Tag Team Partners Who Hate Each Other, and Goldberg doesn’t want to make the tag. Flair ends up tagging himself in and Goldberg tries to yank him out by the hair. Flair-biased referee Charles Robinson refuses to count when Flair is pinned so Hogan punches him out before eating a Goldberg spear. Then they go all Jim Crockett Promotions by going off the air before a finish. This is kind of a front for a Goldberg/Hogan match with Nash and Flair out of it most of the time. This is a really fun match.

[1999-03-15-WCW-Nitro] Rey Misterio Jr vs Billy Kidman
Got ****1/4 in the WON and while I wouldn’t go that high that wasn't terribly off. The crowd was losing it throughout. Rey and Kidman both bust out all of their big highspots and there’s a wow factor. Personal side story is that my stepdad stopped watching wrestling in 1988 because he thought it got too stupid and that there wasn’t enough wrestling. He loved this match when he watched Nitro with me one week and kept going on about how no one can say those guys aren’t great athletes. That finishing move was mind-blowing and they get a standing ovation. Also, Rey wins the cruiser title, which means he is right back where he started and they gave up on the Giant Killer push after three weeks. WCW couldn't seem to realize this is the type of thing that was their strength, not these stupid and poorly produced NWO vignettes.

[1999-03-15-WCW-Nitro] David Flair and the NWO
Nash and Torrie Wilson are watching David Flair on a monitor in the hotel room with Miss Robinson. So awful! Why is there a camera on Nash and Torrie watching? David won't take the bait because he's in love with Torrie. They actually have David Flair throw out "Are you trying to seduce me, Miss Robinson?" with a straight face. Ridiculous. Nash rambles on and suspects Torrie is really in love with David because she said it was "sweet". Nash reminds Torrie of the situation he got her out of in Detroit. Who the fuck gives a shit? Kevin Nash booking is something else.

[1999-03-15-WCW-Nitro] Music Video: Disco Inferno
Disco Inferno comes to the announce booth upset that they're playing Konnan's music video yet again. He politely asks them not to play it again since has no video himself. Tony explains that he isn't the one who makes these decisions. They go to the video and Disco has superimposed himself throughout the video. This is actually hilarious. The best thing Disco Inferno ever did. He struggles with the words and ends up saying Oil of Olay, all day, every day. Tony does his best to hide laughter but fails miserably. Great stuff.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin & Mankind vs The Rock & Big Show
This has a hot crowd plus we get Austin and Rock hooking it up, making it a really good WM snapshot. Really hot tag match - not great, but an amazing crowd and a fun ride.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] HHH and Kane
Clip of Kane throwing a fireball at HHH and hitting Chyna by accident the previous week to start. The fireball looked awesome. HHH does his first real angry promo and really feels like a B-plus player. He is angry since the fireball was intended for him and wants Kane to come out. They end up brawling around the ringside area. Vince casually walks out and asks Kane to stop beating up HHH because he needs his help. Every time Kane tries to go with him and help, HHH stops him to brawl. Kane takes off his mask and it's the Undertaker in the outfit. The lights go out, and when they come back in the ring, Vince is alone with HHH. Funny that all this time, Mr. McMahon and HHH never interacted. I remember thinking it was so weird at the time that DX and Vince never even had a verbal spar or anything.

One more trip to Vince's house, and this time, the Undertaker's "symbol" is on fire in the front yard.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] Mean Street Posse vignette
These guys were a riot at first when they played them up as rich white boy douches as much as possible. Rodney and Pete Gas talk about how great Shane is while they show the posh streets of Greenwich.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] Sable and Jerry Lawler at Playboy Mansion
Sable takes Jerry Lawler at the Playboy Mansion and they make a humorous vignette out of it. Funny stuff with Sable doing her best to keep Lawler out of trouble, which is a full-time job. Hugh Hefner makes an appearance. Sable can't protect Lawler of course and he ends up getting kicked out. Funny stuff.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] Vince McMahon's House
Undertaker is at Vince's mansion waiting for "her". "She" isn't there yet, but it looks like The Ministry of Darkness will be waiting on her when she gets there. Jim Ross loved to talk about Ultimate Warrior having to do all of this extracurricular crap to make up for his in-ring shortcomings on the DVD doc, but no one ever levels that critique at the Undertaker.

[1999-03-15-WWF-Raw] Road Dogg vs Val Venis
The big last-minute switcheroo that pissed everyone off, as Road Dogg wins the Intercontinental title, putting him in the Billy Gunn spot in the feud with Val Venis and Ken Shamrock. The storyline in this one is that Val has promised to win the match in three minutes, so he wrestles with a lot of urgency. Pretty good short match with both guys going all out, but I think short matches like this in title changes play a small role in an IC title like we have today. This match is tremendous to be so short though.

Crowd Chants
It's something I've actually heard Dave talk about a lot of times. She was for the most part made to look smarter than Brie, and she also played up "Yes!" chants in her favor. I think Dave overstates it, and people do cheer when she gets her comeuppance, but she also does sometimes try to be cool heel.

Stephanie has been a heel that tries to get cheered for a while.

[1999-03-14-WCW-Uncensored] Ric Flair vs Hulk Hogan (Cage, First Blood)
I've seen this described as NWA fanfic, watching Flair win the title with referee Charles Robinson refusing to acknowledge his bleeding. As a double-turn, it's a massive failure and is sort of the moment WCW really fell off the rails. Yes the WWF had re-established itself as the #1 wrestling company by this point, but WCW was still successful until they made this switch. They do get the crowd to go with the turn, but it's Flair and Hogan, they know how to work a crowd into reacting the way they want. Flair wins the title again, which I don't think anyone expected at this point, and also takes the Presidency of WCW "for life", which should have been the finish of SuperBrawl. But when you see how he won it and the way he's presented after winning it, it's pretty obvious he was set up to fail here.

[1999-03-14-WCW-Uncensored] Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko vs Curt Hennig & Barry Windham
Last few minutes. I didn't remember this being a lumberjack strap match at all. Match seems okay, but not much different from last month outside of the gimmick. Arn takes matters into his own hand and hits Hennig with a tire iron to give Benoit and Malenko the win and the tag titles after a Benoit diving headbutt where Hennig is waaaayyyy too far away. That finish made me cringe a little because it was a close call. The heel turn led to a good run for Benoit and Malenko as a heel tag team with Arn at ringside that I wish had lasted much longer.

[1999-03-14-WCW-Uncensored] Kevin Nash vs Rey Misterio Jr
Last few minutes. Nash gets a decisive win, lest anyone have some idea that Rey can play with the big boys, effectively sending Rey back to the cruiserweight division. Nash has some pretty smart offense to take advantage of the size difference.

[1999-03-14-WWF-Sunday Night Heat] Jim Ross, Steve Williams, Big Show, Mankind, Steve Austin and The Rock
The end of the segment where Ed Ferrera mocks Jim Ross's Bells Palsy in the WWF when Tiger Ali Singh offers a fan money to impersonate him. While Jim Ross is cutting his promo, Vince sends Big Show to the ring to get rid of him and Dr. Death. They leave on their own accord and The Rock shows up shortly thereafter. Vince chases after them, as Rock and Show are having trouble getting along. They end up brawling with each other and Show is about to chokeslam Rock when Mankind comes down with a chair and goes after Show, but Show punches Mick through the chair and then chokeslams him. This brings out Austin and now Rock is the only guy in the ring. Austin suggests he's in cahoots with Big Show and that they are pulling one over on Vince. Show gets so upset that he destroys the ring like he did on an early Thunder. Total sound and fury signifying nothing.
