Riki Choshu
Choshu is a top 20 contender for me. He was more of an elder statesman in the 90s, which is interesting considering his role as destroyer of status quo in the 1980s. Here's some stuff I'd recommend from his older career. Choshu is a guy who adds so much to multi-mans beyond even the sequences or spots. He often works with far lower ranked guys but gives the entire presentation credibility because he cares so much what he's doing. I've seen good multi-mans where he's the only true major superstar involved that have been quite heated. Shinjiro Ohtani
Other Otani worth seeing and talking about that hasn't already been mentioned. Shinjiro Otani & Wild Pegasus vs Great Sasuke & Black Tiger (10/09/94) Shinjiro Otani & Wild Pegasus vs Great Sasuke & Black Tiger (10/18/94) Shinjiro Otani vs Koji Kanemoto (04/16/95) Shinjiro Otani vs Ultimo Dragon (12/13/95) Shinjiro Otani vs Wild Pegasus (03/20/96) Shinjiro Otani vs Black Tiger (06/05/96) Shinjiro Otani vs Kazushi Sakuraba (06/17/96) Shinjiro Otani & Koji Kanemoto vs Jushin Liger & Dr. Wagner Jr. (03/06/99) Shinjiro Otani vs El Samurai (06/03/99) I tried to avoid other high end tag matches and six-mans where he was involved, because I don't really remember his specific contributions, but those likely favor him too. I'm going to stumble over how to reconcile a really disappointing heavyweight run with an absolutely tremendous junior run. A long career like the junior run would make him a top 25 candidate but the heavy stuff alone would put him nowhere in contention. So who knows.

Yoshiaki Fujiwara
Phil, have you seen Fujiwara/Takada from 10/25/90? I didn't see a review for it. I think it blows away the 2/27/90 match and is possibly the most cerebral match performance I've ever seen from a wrestler. Very much worth checking out.

Aja Kong
I was thinking that another feather in Aja's cap is that she was still good and had more strong years even after her run as WWWA champ was over. Compare that to someone like Toyota, who really felt like a has been the moment she dropped the title. (I realize Toyota had some standout matches after that, but they were rare.)

Owen Hart
I think Owen has as good of a chance of being in my bottom 50 as anyone else. He was quite possibly the best guy in the WWF at constructing TV matches in the mid-90s. It was either him or 1-2-3 Kid. He also has the Bret match at Wrestlemania X to his credit, which is as good as almost any match to happen stateside in the 1990s. There's also the 10-man tag at Canadian Stampede where he played a huge role. The Vader match at One Night Only. The Michaels match at the February 1996 In Your House. The Shamrock matches at Fully Loaded and Summerslam 1998. The Austin match at Summerslam 1997, which was pretty great before Austin was hurt. His chemistry with Shawn Michaels shouldn't be overlooked either. All stuff worth checking out. Owen Hart vs Shawn Michaels (08/08/93, All American) Owen Hart vs Shawn Michaels (08/12/96, RAW) Owen Hart vs Shawn Michaels (12/29/97, RAW) He also had a few strong one-off matches against guys like 1-2-3 Kid and Bam Bam Bigelow sprinkled through that time period. If he has a weakness, I think it's that early in his career, his stuff didn't always look "hurty" enough. He was graceful but didn't really pack much impact. You see the Shamrock match at Fully Loaded and realize he totally has that in him though.

Bob Backlund
One thing I will say in Backlund's favor is that the guy aged exceptionally well. You like his style or you don't, but there's not a significant difference in how he worked in the late 70s versus the early 90s. I want to go back and watch the stuff jdw has talked up from the late 70s/early 80s before casting a vote. I also think I should check out his 1988 match with Takada. This is a slept on match that is probably his peak performance of the 90s. As Mid South as a WWF match was going to get in 1995. Bret Hart & Davey Boy Smith vs Owen Hart & Bob Backlund (WWF Action Zone 02/26/95) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1tbg5y_bret-hart-davey-boy-smith-vs-owen-hart-bob-backlund-wwf-action-zone-02-26-1995_sport

Kensuke Sasaki
The Hase-Sasaki team is a big positive for him as well. I think Hase carried the team in some ways, but that sounds more negative than I mean it. I don't really have any idea how good Sasaki got in the 2000s, but in the 1990s, he wasn't bad. He was really good at following the lead of a superior opponent and having good matches. I think it's interesting that in the '92 G-1 Climax, he had a better match with Rude than Hashimoto did. Other matches I'd recommend checking out: Hase/Sasaki team: Kensuke Sasaki & Hiroshi Hase vs Keiji Muto & Masa Chono (11/01/90) Kensuke Sasaki & Hiroshi Hase vs Rick & Scott Steiner (03/21/91) Kensuke Sasaki & Hiroshi Hase vs Keiji Muto & Masa Chono (07/04/91) Kensuke Sasaki & Hiroshi Hase vs Riki Choshu & Shinya Hashimoto (10/21/92) Singles matches: Kensuke Sasaki vs Hiroshi Hase (06/26/92) Kensuke Sasaki vs Shinya Hashimoto (01/04/95) Other matches: Kensuke Sasaki & Tatsumi Fujinami vs Hiroshi Hase & Shinya Hashimoto (07/31/92) Kensuke Sasaki & Jushin Liger vs Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas (12/29/92) I kinda feel like anything with him as Power Warrior should be avoided, but anyone weighing him fairly should check out at least one match. The quintessential Hellraisers match is probably: Hellraisers vs Rick & Scott Steiner (01/04/93)

Megumi Kudo
Megumi Kudo is a contender for the bottom 20 or so on my list. She had an interesting career path in the sense that she wasn't considered up to snuff compared to her classmates, and athletically, that's probably true. But she was very smart and really became the female Onita in terms of excelling in outlandish gimmick matches. Her charisma was a different kind of charisma than Onita's though, so that's really where I think the parallels end. Matches I'd recommend: Tags Megumi Kudo & Combat Toyoda vs Akira Hokuto & Bull Nakano (09/19/92, FMW) Megumi Kudo & Combat Toyoda vs Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada (04/02/93, AJW) Megumi Kudo & Combat Toyoda vs Manami Toyota & Toshiyo Yamada (05/05/93, FMW) Singles Spotlight Megumi Kudo vs Aja Kong (AJW 12/06/93) - One of my favorite Aja Kong matches because it's so different from other AJW matches at the time. Kudo is unapologetically basic and works like a Joshi Arn Anderson in this one. This is one of the most accessible matches to the unwashed, I think, because it's wrestled like an American main event. Retirement Tour Megumi Kudo vs Shinobu Kandori (01/05/97, LLPW, Street Fight) Megumi Kudo vs Shinobu Kandori (03/14/97, FMW, Barbed Wire Match) Megumi Kudo, Shinobu Kandori, Michiko Omukai & Kaori Nakayama vs Shark Tsuchiya, Eagle Sawai, Sayori Okino & Miss Mongol (04/07/97, LLPW) Megumi Kudo vs Mayumi Ozaki (04/18/97, FMW, Barbed Wire Match) (I thought every single one of these matches was 4*+, so I plan on going back and watching everything from her retirement tour since I have the feeling there's more there.) Best Death Match Ever Megumi Kudo vs Combat Toyoda (05/05/96, FMW)

My Top 100 Matches of 1998
The summer is the best time of the year for sure, but yeah, this is the first time I had to dip below ***1/2 in the top 100. That said, the top matches are pretty strong.

Ric Flair
I think anyone who watched the matches I've listed below will have a really good grasp on peak Flair. I've tried to not just list best matches, but also any notable competitive matches that are out there. I'll do this for each of his first six title reigns, which to me is where the meat of his #1 case is. 1st Title Reign (9/17/81-6/10/83) 1st tour of Japan - Title Defenses Ric Flair vs Genichiro Tenryu (10/06/81) Ric Flair vs Terry Funk (10/07/81) Ric Flair vs Ashura Hara (10/08/81) Ric Flair vs Jumbo Tsuruta (10/09/81) 2nd Tour of Japan - Title Defenses Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat (06/04/82) Ric Flair vs Jumbo Tsuruta (06/08/82) 3rd Tour of Japan - Title Defenses Ric Flair vs Jumbo Tsuruta (06/08/83) Mid Atlantic Ric Flair vs Ole Anderson (10/17/81, Strap Match) Ric Flair vs Jack Brisco (08/18/82) St. Louis Ric Flair vs Dusty Rhodes (01/01/82) Ric Flair vs Bruiser Brody (02/11/83) Florida Ric Flair vs Mike Graham (02/20/82) Georgia Ric Flair vs Harley Race (02/28/82) Portland Ric Flair vs Brett Wayne Sawyer (04/10/82) Ric Flair vs Brett Wayne Sawyer (10/02/82) Memphis Ric Flair vs Jerry Lawler (08/14/82) World Class Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich (08/15/82) Ric Flair vs David Von Erich (10/11/82) Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich (12/25/82, Cage Match) Ric Flair vs Terry Gordy (02/04/83) Ric Flair vs Kevin Von Erich (04/01/83) Puerto Rico Ric Flair vs Carlos Colon (10/16/82) Tag Matches Ric Flair/Dick Slater vs Giant Baba/Atsushi Onita (All Japan, 06/06/82) Ric Flair/Crusher Blackwell vs Dory Funk Jr./Ken Patera (Wrestling at the Chase, 06/13/82) Ric Flair/Rip Oliver vs Roddy Piper/Billy Jack Haynes (Portland, 05/14/83)

Ric Flair
A 1978 match with Jumbo hit All Japan Classics a while back. I never watched it. I looked for it online and don't see it. I remember hearing that the Ric Flair of 1978 was not in the same ballpark of the Ric Flair three years later, but I don't know. There's also the match against Pete Sanchez from MSG in 1976, which isn't anything special but is there. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5kzjf_flair-debut-ric-flair-vs-pete-sanch_sport

I love that that was actually mentioned in HHH's documentary, so maybe he's still bitter about it.

Eventually, yes. But the board upgrade impeded some of my progress there. I'd recommend using this thread to talk about the matches. Later, I'll use the quote function to drop previous thoughts in the match-specific threads.

I haven't heard that about Hayes. Kevin Dunn, yes, but not Hayes.

Ric Flair
I think we broke Charles. I'm in one piece. And for the record, anyone who wants to consider the twilight of Flair's career isn't going to get too much of a hard time from me as long as it's not being disproportionately weighed against the years where he made his case. I would say the same if we had multiple pages talking about chop-chop-chop era Kobashi, 1998-1999 Randy Savage or late 90s Jumbo. But I think six pages where the majority of the posts have been fixated on that part of his career instead of discussing the years where he earned his reputation is a little excessive, although admittedly some of the posts were more about the general point being made. Or, if we are going to do it for Flair, we should be doing the same thing for other wrestlers that have fallen off at the end. My post had plenty of snark, but it was also an attempt to steer the conversation away from something that people seem fixated on more than it's relevant in my opinion. Ric Flair had 36 years as a full time performer and all but the first 10 years or so are available for pretty in-depth mining by anyone who wants to take it on. So let's talk about all of it - the 80s, the 90s and yes, the 2000s. Even if you like him in pockets when he's older, focusing on that at the expense of his prime is robbing yourself of a lot of fun wrestling watching. Don't even have Flair on your list for all I care. But his 2000s being disappointing at times is a strawman of sorts. Who's out there defending it or calling it something good? I'm sure not.

Sean Waltman
I think he has a strong case for the top 100 that may not be readily apparent unless it's spelled out, so I've been holding off on making the post in support of him until I have proper time to devote to it. But his career has been almost deceptively good. Magnum Milano touched on some of the reasons above. I suppose we can also talk about the concept of "X-Pac Heat" here and either throw it out or acknowledge it as something that's real. Might as well get that out of the way too.
