[1998-12-28-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair vs Eric Bischoff
Bischoff tries to duck out on the match and the Horsemen make a surprise appearance, carting Bischoff to the ring. The NWO try to run in and help Bischoff pretty quickly but the NWO cut them off at the aisle. The Giant comes out and walks right past everyone and headbutts Flair in the ring. WCW guys clear the locker room to hold off the NWO (how about that?) RANDY SAVAGE shows up in an NWO black and white t-shirt but it's a swerve, as he knocks Giant out of the ring, then leaves. For four more months. WCW. Now Flair applies the figure four and wins Bischoff's job. Great way to end the year and the first genuinely feel good thing WCW has done in months. WCW guys (and Konnan??) come out to show support for Flair and celebrate with him in the ring - not just wrestlers but announcers and crew members as well. This would have served as an anti-climatic blowoff but would have at least been something to wrap up the NWO for good. But then there's next week at the Dome. But we'll talk about that next year. And with that, we say goodbye to 1998!

[1998-12-28-WCW-Nitro] Interview: Kevin Nash
Nash is getting pretty soundly booed. Nash frames a promo around Money Power Respect, taking a page from The Lox, and seems to hate the way he won the title. Disco vs Bigelow tonight and if he wins, he can join the Wolfpac. Nash says Hall has to answer what he's done, then says he's going to make this right by putting the title on the line against Goldberg next week at the dome. Oh boy, here we go. We're wrapping up this set but we ain't seen nothing yet - things are about to get ugly in WCW.

[1998-12-28-WCW-Nitro] Eddy Guerrero & Juventud Guerrera vs Rey Misterio Jr & Billy Kidman
Fun tag match to continue the momentum of these four from the night before, with Eddy as the ultimate heel and Juventud having sort of a Stockholm Syndrome relationship with him. Eddy gets great heat in this. Rey is FIP and it takes the crowd a while to really get into this, but Kidman, to his credit, works the apron well and gets everyone pumped up. Eddy and Juventud adapt well as a tag team and even pull out some double team moves, and Rey and Kidman respond in kind after the hot tag. I would have loved to have seen these guys compete in the upcoming tag tournament, as this match makes this look like a feud with potential.

Randy Savage
The guy had a final year (a final two years actually, as 1998 was also pretty brutal) which ended his career on a major whimper. He was trying to recreate a rivalry with Hogan that was long past its expiration date and produced some actively bad matches. He had something decent with Bret once and that's about all he has for the two years his career continued after the Page feud ended.

Randy Savage
I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

[1998-12-28-WCW-Nitro] Ric Flair and Eric Bischoff
Flair does one of his most famous interviews, challenging Bischoff to a match later on the show where he promises to leave wrestling and give Bischoff all of his money if Bischoff can beat him. But if Flair wins, he gets to run WCW for 90 days. He strips down to his boxers and handcuffs himself to the ring ropes until Bischoff comes out to give a response. So much of too great to describe without transcribing it word-for-word, but Flair gets at least a half dozen great lines out, regardless of your opinion on the stripped down portion of this.

Randy Savage
If we're being fair, we need to talk about Savage's return to 1999 WCW where he was heavily muscled up and was pretty obviously struggling in the ring. Those Nash matches are pretty bad.

[1998-12-28-WWF-Raw] Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels
Vince calls Shawn out, as promised, to fire him. Vince shows a clip of Shawn cutting a scathing promo on Vince in the WM build and recaps Shawn laughing at Shane last week. He wraps up by saying Vince McMahon doesn't lay down for anyone, then tells him he's fired as commissioner. Shawn ends up superkicking him and dancing on him, turning babyface in the process. He just turned heel a month ago! And did they think Shawn was returning to the ring at this point? He's getting a lot of focus.

The Hep would affect his athleticism, sure, but that's a crutch anyway.

[1998-12-28-WWF-Raw] Sexual Chocolate
Mark Henry comes out to apologize to his girlfriend Chyna for what he did with PMS last week. After the nights of passion he and Chyna shared, it was completely wrong. He ends up interrupted by PMS and starts hiding behind D-Lo. D-Lo tells them to back off and calls them glorified ring rats. D-Lo is telling PMS they are lucky he's a gentleman when Chyna shows up. She has braces and her words are really slurred. She tells PMS to stay away from her man. Terri doesn't take heed but Jackie does and gets shoved to the ground. Henry is ecstatic!

[1998-12-28-WWF-Raw] Vince McMahon Workout
This video is awesome, with Vince working out like crazy and Shane staying on him to keep at it by evoking the name of Steve Austin. EAT LIGHTNING AND CRAP THUNDER! YOUR INTENSITY IS FOR SHIT! Vince pausing when Shane asks him who he hates is hilarious. Classic.

[1998-12-28-WWF-Raw] Vince McMahon and DX
Vince comes out to get in DX's face and make a few matches for tonight. He's also upset that Shawn laughed when Shane got broncobustered the week before and has promised to fire Shawn when he arrives later tonight.

[1998-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '98] Goldberg vs Kevin Nash
Before the legendary result, this was a pretty decent match. Goldberg's working ability I think has been unfairly maligned over the years in some circles. The guy had some impressive raw physical tools and would have evolved into a great worker quickly in a healthy environment. I think he was excellent at what he did as is. Nash proves with this result that his only problem with Hogan steering the ship was that he wanted to do all the things Hogan did steering the ship for himself. So there you go. The streak is over.

Do the late 90s comedy matches that opened All Japan cards bring Jumbo down in your eyes?

Ric Flair
So I thought maybe after reading this thread that Ric Flair's career started when he was called up in his 50s from developmental to wrestle in WWE. But it turns out that Flair had a career that started in 1972, which shocked me! He was also supposedly pretty good in the 1980s and even for a big chunk of the 90s. What are everyone's favorite and least favorite Flair matches and performances in those years? I had never heard of the guy before reading this thread, so I was only vaguely aware of that. I saw a few references to his early stuff and some people seem to like it, but would you all consider those years a significant part of his career?

[1998-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '98] Ric Flair vs Eric Bischoff
I know they talk up Bischoff's credentials, but a non-wrestler going competitive with a guy like Flair is tough to accept. They did make sure Bischoff's openings were cheapshots and I realize they had to do something to keep the match going back and forth. This would be an interesting comparison as a match to Austin-McMahon seven weeks later. Flair event gets some color. The heat picks up big time when he does the Shattered Dreams to Bischoff after knocking the ref out. Hennig comes out and slips brass knucks on Flair's hand. Bischoff KOs Flair and ends up getting the pin. On a normal show, this would be the worst finish, but believe it or not, they topped themselves before the night was over. I think the match worked, but I think a better route would have been Flair vs Scott Steiner where Flair would get Bischoff alone for five minutes if he won.

[1998-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '98] Scott Hall promo
Scott Hall comes out in an Outsiders t-shirt. Hall responds to Nash saying he needs to prove himself before they can become friends again by saying he only needs to prove anything to himself. He can't wait to kiss 1998 goodbye, because 1999 will be his year.

[1998-12-27-WCW-Starrcade '98] Rey Misterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera vs Billy Kidman / Eddy Guerrero vs Billy Kidman
I liked this a lot at first, but it still falls victim to the same things that plague all three-way matches. That said, it's one of the better examples of finding a way to work a match like this without requiring one of the match participants to be laid out for an unrealistic length of time, so I'll give them credit for that. And they do hit all of their spots beautifully. But Rey and Kidman worked so much as a team that Juventud ended up as an outnumbered heel, which doesn't really work. Eddy ends up interfering and trying to help Juventud win, but it backfires and Kidman pins Juventud to retain the title. After the replay, Eddy dresses down both Rey and Juventud in the ring for not getting the job done, especially Juventud. He finally decides that when you want something done, you have to do it yourself. He challenges Kidman to a title match and Kidman comes back out and says there is no time like the present, which isn't exactly what Eddy had in mind. That match is good and has more heat since Eddy is a true heel. Rey and Juventud stay at ringside, with Juventud supporting Eddy and Rey supporting Kidman. I loved Eddy smacking Kidman with his work boot. He is the master. Kidman was put over strong though all of this but the Eddy match I think did even more to really make him look good. Kidman was really fortunate to work with such great guys during this time.

[1998-12-27-GAEA] Aja Kong & Mayumi Ozaki vs Toshiyo Yamada & Meiko Satomura
This is a very good match, but I wish it was a little less of a brawl and more of a standard wrestling match since that's where the Kong-Satomura rivalry shines. Of course we get their singles match in a big way in 1999 and it more than delivers and still acts as a terrific teaser for what's to come. In fact, you could call this entire match and post-angle that - a really effective way to set up all the big events of 1999. This is the first time Lioness Asuka and Chigusa Nagayo have interacted with each other since 1989 and it's a pretty big deal. Ozaki seems to be having too much fun instigating.

[1998-12-26-ECW-TV] Sabu vs Taz
Sabu takes quite the beating here, enough to make this a solid match. For once, they put over a table spot as death, with Taz doing a dragon suplex through a table with Sabu landing on his head. He then pulls Sabu on top of him to get the win, and Sabu wins the FTW title. Taz's only explanation is that he always picks his spots. Rob Van Dam is in the ring with NO PONYTAIL.

[1998-12-26-ECW-TV] Tommy Dreamer, Justin Credible and Terry Funk
Jazz is a fan and ends up arguing with Chastity as Credible heads to the ring. They end up getting in a fight in the ring that Credible and Jason try to separate. This was all a swerve with Chastity getting attacked and Jazz leaving with Credible. Tommy Dreamer ends up making the save. Then Terry Funk shows up and ends up helping Credible attack Dreamer. Heel Funk seems like a waste of time at this point since it's not like ECW fans are going to buy him that way at his age. A spinning toehold is a ridiculous move to do in the context of a beatdown in ECW considering all the weapons shots.

[1998-12-26-MPPW-TV] 1998 PPW Awards
Dave and Cory present various achievement awards for 1998. Rookie of the Year is Derrick King. Most Improved is Kid Wikkid. Randy Hales interrupts the award giving and asks Tony Falk to come out. He says no one voted on this award but him. Hales proceeds to air all of his dirty laundry on television, so the award he is presenting him is Turkey of the Year! Brandon Baxter is out later in the show to bring out some guy that is going to beat Tony Falk tonight. I don't know who the guy is with Baxter but this segment looks awfully bush league, and I like Brandon Baxter just because he seems like a genuinely nice guy. Back to the awards ... Woman of the Year is Stacy. Samantha is out to take exception and Dundee comes out to calm her down, telling her it's all politics and nothing to get bent out of shape about. After all, Stacy will take her clothes off at the drop of a hat. This brings Lawler out and they argue for a minute. Most Hated goes to Randy Hales. Hales finds that insulting since he's the one who brought Power Pro to Memphis. Manager of the Year goes to Brandon Baxter and Hales ends up attacking him from behind but they end up brawling around over it. People are getting way too worked up about these awards. It's not like it's a contentious PWO thread for crying out loud. I have no idea why Brian Christopher is nominated for Most Popular, but he is. He comes out before the name is revealed. Lawler is the winner and Christopher is angry because he's an idiot. A Dundee-Christopher brawl breaks out. Seriously, just hand out the awards and act civilized.
