[1998-03-23-WWF-Raw] New Age Outlaws, Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie
The Quebecers are back in the WWF way past the expiration date. I preferred the Amazing French Canadians. The NAO are at ringside in tuxes hanging out with inflatable women for some reason. They end up attacking Funk and Cactus with the champagne bucket and Gunn breaks a table over Funk's head. This ends with Cactus eating a spike piledriver on a chair and this match has been really well hyped going into Wrestlemania.

[1998-03-23-WCW-Thunder] Chris Jericho and Lenny Lane
Lenny Lane quickly interrupts Chris Jericho because he owes him $1000 for helping him out on Thunder. Jericho calls him a "young boy" and accuses him of pulling that whole stunt without Jericho's knowledge or permission. He also famously says his Loverboy tape is missing, and that it's Lane who owes him $1000 for ruining his wrestling gear. Lane ends up slapping Jericho.

[1998-03-23-WCW-Thunder] Sting vs DDP
This was a very good match, and it was the type of heavyweight match between stars that's actually good that WCW needed to deliver more often. I do think Page was the one who brought most of the good stuff to this one, but I will give credit to Sting for carrying himself like a champ in terms of being the primary aggressor. Great finish too. This is the most excited I've seen a WCW crowd about anything other than Goldberg all year. Maybe Sting could have found his groove as champion with more motivated opponents like this.

[1998-03-23-WCW-Thunder] Chavo Guerrero Jr vs Ultimo Dragon
Eddy, save us! Last minute or so. Ultimo gets the win with the dragon sleeper. Post-match, Gene interviews Eddy and Chavo, and Eddy chastises Chavo over losing. Gene is upset at someone being browbeaten over losing a match - ha! Eddy insists that Chavo apologize to grandma! Eddy is hilarious talking to his grandma in Spanish watching at home.

[1998-03-21-ECWA-Super 8] Ace Darling vs Mike Quackenbush
For what it's worth, I did like this better than RVD-Scorpio. This was pretty basic but I liked that Quack seemed to be working hard to involve the crowd. This isn't going to light anyone's world on fire and did have a few silly spots, but overall it was pretty inoffensive. Perfectly acceptable. Not really good, but acceptable.

[1998-03-20-ECW-Blackwood, NJ] Rob Van Dam vs 2 Cold Scorpio
Alfonso with the whistle at ringside is unbearable. This is a bunch of crappy stalling and non-action, and RVD isn't good enough at stalling to build an entire match around it. I actively hated this. The guy everyone thought ECW should have been built around because he was so over managed to kill the crowd so much that he got a "boring" chant started. I have almost never done this on yearbooks but I had to stop watching this at a certain point.

[1998-03-19-WCW-Thunder] Goldberg and the NWO
Last few minutes of Rick Steiner vs Curt Hennig, which is every bit as inspired as you'd expect it to be by this time. Rude and Hennig are attacking Steiner after Rude runs in. All the bit NWO players run in to attack Rick (and DiBiase) and this just goes and goes. Finally, Goldberg makes the save to an enormous pop. Hennig and Adams eat a double spear and then Norton does too. That was Goldberg's first interaction with the NWO but it wasn't followed up on until Hogan at the Georgia Dome because ... WCW.

[1998-03-19-WCW-Thunder] Music Video: Bret Hart
Bret Hart is in WCW! And his whole angle so far has simply been that he's here. That's it. He's here.

[1998-03-19-WCW-Thunder] DDP and Raven
WCW with an actual, honest-to-God presence in the NY media market. Amazing. Raven interrupts DDP on MTV and ends up attacking him. Looking back, Raven received a pretty nice push during most of his WCW time and it doesn't make sense that he was unhappy there at all.

[1998-03-17-FMW-Winning Road] Hayabusa vs The Gladiator
This lost me when Awesome did such horrible looking powerbombs which were executed in a way that makes it nearly impossible for Hayabusa to actually take the bump. In general, this was a good spotfest and Hayabusa continues to show how versatile he is and how he can work with anyone, but this was lacking as a wrestling match. It was a strong individual performance from Hayabusa though, but Awesome was all over the place, meaning this didn't come together like it should have.

[1998-03-16-WCW-Nitro] Hulk Hogan & Randy Savage vs Sting & Lex Luger
This show is so drug-induced. Hey, let's have Sting descend from a helicopter into ring that's surrounded by a pool in a night club, before a match that would have been a total dream match ten years earlier! This was in slow motion and was more of a front to sell the Hogan-Savage dissension. Beefcake attacks Savage and looks awful doing it. He runs in for the DQ when Luger has Hogan in the rack, I guess because Lex Luger was too big of a deal to do the job at this point. Then we get the NWO run-in and WCW is stalestalestale.

[1998-03-16-WCW-Nitro] Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and The Giant
Hall and Nash are in Hawaiian shirts and are so trashed here. They are calling out The Giant, who comes out in his wrestling gear and looks like such a geek in comparison to Hall and Nash, who are dressed for the occasion. Nash says lucky for Giant, he's the cannonball champion of spring break and dives into the pool. This leaves Hall behind to get press slammed into the pool. I think this is the last time we'd see Hall for months as he was headed to rehab, and what a way to go.

[1998-03-16-WWF-Raw] Luna vs Sable
Sable and Luna in a pull-apart brawl. Luna was a good choice to help Sable get over. Awesome that Goldust took a bump for Luna. Sable has hurt her knee and Mero has to help her up when the lights go out and Kane's music starts. Mero ends up getting scared away and bailing, leaving Sable all alone to deal with Kane. Just when it appears all hope is lost, Undertaker's music starts up. Nice of Undertaker to show up and cut a promo, but dude, Sable needs help. The segment ends with Undertaker burning an effigy of Kane. This was a really hot segment, and is just about as 1998 WWF as it gets.

[1998-03-16-WWF-Raw] Steve Austin video
Another great video, not just for hyping Wrestlemania but for hinting at what the post-WM direction would be, as the Austin-McMahon feud is a big centerpiece. The Shawn video is the best of the three, but these are all tremendous.

[1998-03-16-WWF-Raw] Shawn Michaels video
Wow, this was classic - one of the best wrestling video packages I think I've ever seen. This is an awesome way to present Shawn not just as the top heel, but as a sort of complex, multi-dimensional guy who always brings it to the big stage.

[1998-03-16-WWF-Raw] New Age Outlaws, Cactus Jack & Chainsaw Charlie
Road Dogg provides house mic commentary during a Billy Gunn vs Chainsaw Charlie match. Cactus and Funk end up hogtying Road Dogg, and Cactus's "your ass better call somebody" line gets a big pop. Fun.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage (Cage)
Last few minutes and wow is it hard to see anything through that cage. I wonder if ringside fans can even see what's going on. Savage does the double axehandle from the top of the cage to wake the crowd up, because yeah, there really was no heat before that. Beefcake is out to deck Mickey Jay at ringside and use the keys to get in the cage. No heat for this. Savage, you're on top of a cage, just crawl down and leave. The two are about to attack Savage when Sting descends from the rafters to make the save and even the sides. They have this awkward, time-stands-still staredown that seems to last forever and Savage ends up turning on Sting before leaving without explanation. WCW booking is pretty bad at this point, but it gets much, much worse, so hang on tight.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] Sting vs Scott Hall
Last few minutes. Dusty takes a bump! Mark Curtis take a bump and I'm surprised to see him refereeing this late. I still think this was a waste - Hall winning could have served as the impetus to do Hall/Nash vs Hogan/Savage, with Hall and Nash coming out to attack both guys during the cage match. I remember thinking that's exactly what was going to happen at the time.

[1998-03-15-WCW-Uncensored] DDP vs Chris Benoit vs Raven
I hated that three-way collar-and-elbow tie-up so much. But they made up for it by putting a garbage can over Raven's head and hitting him with crutches. There were some really clever brawling spots in this, especially the stuff with the stop sign. It says a lot that I liked this considering my distaste for brawling away from the ringside area these days. I really appreciate the creativity of this match - it's not something that really looks great years later, but I'd still call it very good, and I can see why it was so loved at the time. This stuff was really a departure from the norm, especially for WCW, which didn't have a ton of garbage brawling.
