More TV content is part of it, but part of it is also that the role of the "great workers" used to be to put over the people with big personalities/star quality. They were kept strong in other matches against lower-ranked guys, so they could do meaningful jobs to higher-ranked guys. That formula died without being replaced with anything equally effective, really.
The challenge would be to do it in a way where Wendy Styles doesn't become a heel, similar to how WWE had to walk that line very carefully to make sure they didn't turn Helen Hart in 1994. The problem with Brock is that they'll never do a segment where Reigns actually leaves him laying, without luck breaking his way or The Shield helping him or something. And that might actually go a long way.

Wrestling shouldn't have handicap matches unless it's a squash to get over a Strowman type. Otherwise, they're stupid.
Part of that is just that WWE has never really been a place for great, naturally-delivered promos at any point in their history. They had Jimmy Hart for a decade and he never had a single great promo, which is mind-boggling. They also didn't really let Nash loose until his last six months or so with the company in 1995-1996, which is funny because he was more of a draw for them in those months than he was as champion. There are exceptions in all-time great promo guys like Randy Savage, Jake Roberts, and Roddy Piper. But most of the time, you have Bret Hart doing canned lines about "preparing yourself to be excellently executed!"
I think in their minds, they do listen to the fans, but not live reactions so much as how they spend their money.
I always thought it would have played like Bret at Survivor Series '94 where he loses after being caught in the chicken wing for ten minutes. Great heat for the new champion and SO MUCH SYMPATHY for the old one.
I also disagree that fans will turn on anyone at the top. They've turned on exactly two wrestlers to any important degree -- John Cena and Roman Reigns. AJ Styles doesn't get booed, and he's the best comparison to Bryan.
Arena Mexico doesn't look like it did in my head, but it's still awesome. I love that the ringside seats are leather.

At the time, the Jericho departure rumors were just heating up and people thought that was for sure something they were doing to humiliate him. It turned out that it was Saturn's idea and that he asked to lose the match.
Mark Henry, Kurt Angle, and Ronda Rousey were Olympians, so they are probably the answer. I agree that Ricochet is an awesome athlete, but I also think we tend to limit ourselves when we talk about athleticism, since it usually seems to mean the ability to do high-flying moves and flips.

I've noticed that for whatever it's worth, the stars created in TNA seem to be much better all-around characters and better promos than the WWE guys who came up at the same time. EC3. Nick Aldis. Bobby Roode. James Storm.
